  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

Wow - to me there is huge difference in the way that light falls off to darkness around curved objects - making them appear far more '3D' & more emotionally captivating.

Amazing progress!

Thanks Phil & Red.

Harcharan...Not sure what you are getting at....

The formalities and complexities involved in sending the camera back to USA from India are not very simple......

Phil,

Wonderful tests, thank you so much for doing this.

Jarred,

Thank you for hold back nothing and giving us the best your team could create.

I have a secret. And this is a very, very important post.

Thanks go to Jarred for letting me break this thing in.

As always Phil, your service and contributions to this forum are much appreciated, great stuff. I can't wait for my Dragon.

Thanks Phil, once again you've outdone yourself in putting together a test that is informative and enlightening! And thanks to Jarred for going to the right guy to get it done!

Very cool Phil!

Might there be a few R3D's in the future?
FYI: I saw Dragon Skin in 4K at the REDstore last week and the vimeo does not do it justice AT ALL!

Thank you everyone!

Phil - just wanted to thank you for being a friend and also for being so damn awesome.

Awe shucks :) See you in two months buddy!

Thank you David. I actually had that .RED/REDRAY RRencoded version with me while picking up some supplies at the store and was like "hey lets put that on there!" Oddly the thing that gets people's blood really hungry for dragon is seeing about 2 minutes of leaves blowing in the wind. I showed this off to a few people and it's all smiles and wows. I like that.

No .R3Ds yet. There isn't a released version of RCX that works with these yet.

Are there any implications for underwater filming with this new OLPF?

Hi Tom, I think I understand the breathe of your question especially involving different depths and resolution depending on your rig. Things I can safely say. You won't have any IR contamination/magenta hurting your overall color, blue will be very pure. In doing extreme overexposure tests it reveals that this calibration holds a bit more tonal and chroma information, so any shot straight up into the sun above the pond will have a bit more "flavor" to it. Overall the image has a bit more captured contrast because there is no IR "washing out" the lower end.

Here's an image showing exactly what is held when extremely overexposed. Look at the pure saturation of the color chips and also the values retained. There's just a bit more in there now.

Extreme Overexposure.

How would that OLPF work on the MX sensor? For the non upgrading people?

This Olpf is a great piece of glass but how is the resolution loss compaired to the old Olpf?

There is zero measurable resolution difference between the OLPFs.

I do know that the OLPF is "tuned" and manufactured for Dragon sensors specifically and the sensors design and color are part of the equation here. So just slapping this in MX is likely not a good idea. Who knows though. Maybe Red has something up their sleaves regarding that.

You're not seeing things! There tends to be more retained contrast between highlight and shadow detailed, which makes the images sing a bit more. Extremely subtle, but totally visible. The previous IR glare/reflection would get in there and "dull" and lift the shadows sometimes. This new OLPF does not kill that information.

Nicely done Phil. Sometimes wish I was your side of the atlantic ;)

Really looking forward to playing with this. I can just imagine how satisfying this must have been from an engineering standpoint for the guys at Red :)

Heading to India for a 4week shoot first of march, hopefully i'll get the email and my dragon before then with this new OLPF :-)

Phil really love your tests and observations. You always answer every question i have.
