  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

The formalities and complexities involved in sending the camera back to USA from India are not very simple......

Harcharan

Understood. But please also understand that sending your camera back to have the new OLPF and settings applied is completely at your discretion and voluntary.

Plenty of supply when they do arrive...?

Cheers - #19

We ordered a healthy supply, yes. Enough to do rolling change to use it with new cameras, with cameras getting upgraded, and for those with prior gen OLPF who wish to switch to this one.

2 more weeks :)

My camera arrived at RED today for the upgrade. So now the question is - let it sit with you guys or not... So Jarred, how certain are you of this 2 weeks estimate? I know I know, everything is subject to change, but... Would love not to have to shell out another $1000 just for shipping (one way, that is...).

And - amazing job y'all, pretty special that you attacked this "problem" and now offer this upgrade free of charge. Thanks!

Tobias, if you want your rep to hold off on the upgrades being performed, email them asap. As to the two weeks, this is when we start the process with the new OLPF. Does not mean every camera gets started the day we start, obviously.

Highlight Retention and Highlight Roll-Off.

That's approximately 1.3+ stops improvements in the highlights.

Hello Phil,

Can you please clarify this 1.3 stops of highlight improvement?

Are you saying that by using the new OLPF, and the new color science,
that Dragon now has 1.3 stops more highlight improvement than it did before?

Wow... That was a lot faster then expected!!

But still I think we'll continue to shoot our Barcelona project with the original one, as I love it either way, and possibly bring over Dragon M8 to NAB for a swap during that time and say hi... ;)

Yes to saying "hi". But won't be doing these swaps at NAB. But our team back in Irvine during that time will be plugging away on them : )

Thanks Brent, done. Have you considered sending out an email to upgrading customers? I was not aware of the new OLPF until yesterday - had I known earlier, I probably would have waited another 2 weeks to send the camera back. Could have been shooting and earning money, now it's just sitting there...

Anyway, thank you for this, really exciting!

It would be great if you could share the R3Ds as well Phil.

Looking over your examples again... This IS pretty rad.

Signal chains are mysterious things.

I volunteer :) Any idea on the turn around to get the new OLPF installed? Can we bring our cameras down, get it switched out in half a day and head back to set?

I have a secret. And this is a very, very important post.

Last week Jarred invited me to test out the new Epic Dragon OLPF plus the new camera/sensor calibration. For the last couple days I've been digging into it real hard.

I'll keep it brief because the images do the talking.

First up, FLARE.

As Jarred mentioned the "OG" Dragon OLPF exhibited reflected IR flare or magenta glow around bright sources. Much of what I've been doing is hard stress testing and comparisons to the New Dragon OLPF.

The Sun.

40 Watt Incandescent Bulb.

Single Source Flashlight.

A Match.

The magenta glow around intense sources is gone. This is great news.

You may notice that there are color and "tonal density" improvements. Dragon received a new calibration and update to the color science to play nice with this New OLPF.

So you might ask, is the IR Cut still as effective and what's the net results on the color utilizing hard Neutral Density Filtration?

Daylight - ND 2.7

IR Cut performance is still wonderful. You will not need additional IR Filtration with the New OLPF on Dragon. You just want regular NDs. I have tested 0.3-2.7 ND.

If you look extremely closely you will notice color has slightly improved overall. Additionally in shadows and highlights IR contamination has been eliminated with the New OLPF. Those blue shadows are extremely pure (check out the sky in the Sun Flare image too). White highlights are white. Dark shadow areas are clean. You may noticed that chroma is richer in the 2800K WB/ISO 2000 Match test image as well. Good stuff.

One more chart.

Artificial Daylight Source - No ND.

Color looks great.

The new calibration has also improved other areas.

Highlight Retention and Highlight Roll-Off.

That's approximately 1.3+ stops improvements in the highlights. Also to note, the New OLPF wrangles light fall-off and bloom a bit nicer. So you get richer shadow detail, where the previous OLPF with it's IR contamination flattened out those areas a bit. Subtle, but visibly noticeable in captured material.

I'm still conducting a few tests, but this is info you're looking for. I hear that the new OLPFs are coming soon and will be dropped into Dragons with this new calibration as well.

Hats off to the Red Team for developing and implementing this New OLPF tech. They listened and worked very quickly.

Now Dragon is even better.

Thanks go to Jarred for letting me break this thing in.

And this is why I think your the best REDUSER Warrior on the forums today Phil.

Jarred... Thanks ! You don't realise how happy I am that this is fixed.... (or soon to be fixed) Well done.
Looking forward to getting the DRAGON back to swap out.

This assumes when you drop it off, that we can start right away : )

You are going to have to assume we will notify people when we are ready to receive their camera and volume will fluctuate. I am guessing we will want at least a few days of it being in house to perform IQC, swap out OLPF, import new settings, test, OQC, etc.

Yep. I can clarify. The new OLPF, calibration, and applied color science yields more captured highlight information.

Essentially, we've all seen the massive dynamic range wedge from way back when of the "native dynamic range" of the Dragon sensor.

Red has been tweaking and tuning the Calibration and Color Science on Dragon and figuring out exactly how to use that total available dynamic range while maintaining optimal image quality.

This new calibration essentially "remaps" the tonal placement a bit and that allows us to capture more highlight information. Under different sources I was able to measure a 1.3 stop difference in the general calibration and this reveals itself in highlights.

Here's an image that illustrates what that actually translates into visually:

Highlight Retention.

The Red and Green bars show the measurable difference between the old calibration and new calibration where the line between captured detail and overexposure exists. This graphic is desaturated and leveled out a bit to easily show the difference in captured dynamic range between the two calibrations. However, there is indeed more color information at the top there too due to it's new calibration as well, which was shown in the previous image. This is part of what's creating the rather organic looking highlight roll-off.

He he, yes Brent, that is what I meant, to stop by at Irvine and say hi to all of those that won't make it to NAB, which I have missed a lot during this past few years, and didn't get a chance to say hi to when I was there win September/October last... Then off we go to NAB while Dragon M8 gets it's new OLPF... ;)

If the timing works out perhaps you could accept incoming Epics in Irvine for upgrade per the usual methods but offer in person pick up in Las Vegas for RedUsers who are coming to NAB anyway. That way they could take them home as carry on. Just a thought. Might be fun to have a special "release the Dragons" event at the RED booth with a raffle for "limited edition" RedUser DragonFlight T-shirts or something...

I realize it might be too much hassle but I do think it would be fun, would put a positive spin on the Dragon rollout and be a nice treat for the folks who live far away. I also think it would send a valuable message to the industry if people were being handed Epic Dragons at NAB that could boot up and shoot on the spot.

Cheers - #19

You wouldn't be able to read the .R3Ds until this alpha build of RCX becomes available, when that happens I'll upload some of these for sure.

Thank you Mark :)

I'm on the same page of "happy feet" over this being fixed. It is a considerable improvement.
