  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.29

Apparently the remapping of the touch components are pretty tough.

What I don't understand is that I have seen some people have rigs with touch screens upside down and I wonder how in the heck do they shoot without following the action in the wrong way constantly having to adjust themselves. Without fail my mind expects to see the image move right when I turn right.

For those that just need access to the menu and not the image.

Brian dont mind Robert.. he is a bit disillusion and thinks that technology should stop innovating at the exact moment when he buys something so that nothing ever evolves past him.

He is that guy that goes around and burns down " On Sale " signs as he is outraged by the thought of anyone paying less than he did for anything.

He always has these rants whenever new things come out or prices change, so just ignore the guy and carry on.

I have no idea why this guy is a RED customer.. The fundamental foundation of our company opposes his moral beliefs that nothing should ever change or be up-gradable and everything should be artificially expensive.

Love it. As i loved Jim words on this forum, and that's one of the reasons, if my business will expand, i'll always stick with Red.

Disregard those prices... those are for the slow speed mags that were intended to record 1080p proxy files. The new cards are for the big guns.

Please the IS on the Tamron 24-70 2.8
That would be great.

So true :-)

If you don't want your tools to loose value - don't buy them, rent them and stop moaning!

Just tested the latest build. Its nice. Some of the things I like:
- customizable menus. Very nice. I often do not need all the fps to be shown so this makes it simpler.
- Integrated Help. Great, not many cameras has this but its of course very useful.

Some thoughts for improvements
- Performance in the menus have gone down. It usually takes 1 second for a menu to appear now, this was faster before. If you can make it a bit snappier this will make it nicer to use.
- Performance in the help was especially low. Maybe you can turn off the reading from the sensor while in the big menus. It seems like its doing something very expensive making it crawl.
- Some graphical Icons would make the menues easier to navigate and make them a bit appealing. Maybe colouring them. The camera is so beautiful on the outside so a shame that it has such a DOS looking interface.

- The update is not complicated but could be made super easy. How about
1 - you put in the SDD with the update. It asks you on the screen "you have version 4.x, do you want to upgrade to 5.2 beta? Yes/No"
2 - If yes, it automatically saves all presets, looks etc.
3- The camera updates, spins up etc (restarts automatically) and says "You have upgraded to 5.2 Now the last used preset will be loaded so it is just as before but new and shiny.
If this is too much work to do, how about. Save/Load All user Settings to SSD. This saves you going into different menues and saving/loading.

Andreas - really like your suggestions on the Update improvements - that would make the whole process much easier and faster - and maintains the presets - YES!!!!

Also - confirming the build and the updated builds - also great.

Much Deeper than that :)

The new mini mags looks cool. One wish I have for them is a more secure way of making sure the memory card doesn't fall out. A little door that you can have in front for example or a way to snap them shut. Nearly lost a 512GB while filming from a snow mobile. It probably got a bump from my and nearly fell out (argh!). So similar to DSLRs where you basically hide the memory card instead of having it sticking out from the camera.

For myself thunderbolt would be very helpful as well since our whole setup is based around thunderbolt. Our Apple Retinas only have 2 usb ports and they are always taken, but with chaining we can have 16 thunderbolt devices. The PERFECT solution would be to have USB3 and thunderbolt on the same reader.

Best wishes!

hard to tell from the video but it does not look like the new mags are THAT much smaller.....i would love a DSLR style card compartment incl door....i have never had issues with cards dropping out but it is always cleaner and safer to have the card completely enclosed and the contacts protected....
i also like the idea of a better firmware update procedure.....i don't think i have ever had a camera that got updates so frequently, which is of course great! but i have also never had a camera with such a cumbersome way of doing it....i guess part of it is the menu section where looks and keys have to be saved to card first....i have actually gone through that part and actually ended up somehow not saving them....but i have also just plain forgotten that step altogether and had to set the camera up from scratch.....obviously my own stupidity but there is definite room for improvement.....

did not know about the custom menu thing...will look into it...only to loose it wight he next update:)...

I really like the idea of a simpler upgrade process.

In my experience many camera assistants are too afraid to do it in the field.

Leading on from that, I keep 64GB card just for firmware upgrades. It would be nice to have a tiny card (i.e.. 2GB) that is super cheap and only used for firmware upgrades.

That would be a simple way to make changes in the field.

That is cool. I found a review here.

I think I will pick one up. I don't mind bying third party solution but when it comes to such core functionality as "not having the $4000 card fall out of the camera" it would be cool if it was just built into the camera from the start. I also wish it was even more safe than the wooden camera since its still not closed. Of course tejp will solve it, but would be great to not have to tejp the camera every time on uses it.

Great stuff!

No ongoing mag_filenames?

No ongoing mag_filenames?

Just tried the firmware on a scarlet, shooting 3 mags. Seems it does not automatically continue mag-names and starts with A001_C001_XXX everytime you put in a new SSD. Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? (I never had to care about ongoing numeration/filenames in the past...) also the effects (alchemy/unsharp etc.) in Redcine are gone (Mac, latest Beta 21 and Build 20) and GTX 570 still doesn't like unsharp mask in beta 21.(glitches on monitor and in quicktime renders)

Sounds like you're still using the old Beta version of RCX-Pro and not the release version.

Has anyone noticed that these beta builds use a lot more power than the current release build? I am seeing about 30 minutes (rough est) less per battery than with the release build. Went back for the time being.

Hm, that is interesting. It could be the interface looks more heavy. Great find, if its the case they can hopefully optimise it. Feels like we always need more battery :)

By the way. Does your cameras every shut down gracefully when you run out of battery? My camera always crashes if I don't pay attention. Was out yesterday with a battery that had not been charged in a while so it was probably not displaying the correct % (it said 20% and was a V-Mount). Bam, camera just went black. I don't normally have problem with this since I always have a Red battery together with a V-Mount and then just watch the battery meter. But sometimes I forget. Maybe there could be a warning/automatic shutdown when battery is going down.
