  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interesting. Have I missed a hint as to whether this means new ssd modules are required?

It is my understanding that the MINI REDMAGs are designed for recording of proxies, etc... - i.e. not up to specs for actually recording the RAW footage.
The only physical Mini SSD module I have seen so far is the Meizler. The PROXY module is also designed to use these smaller mags.
I doubt RED will switch to the MINI REDMAGs for main RAW recording any time soon (if at all)...

Things just changed ...

New mini mags for Dragon of thee 512GB and 1T have been announced and should be available some time shortly for pre-order.

Better compression, obviously more time, and you will need a new side unit for the Dragon. Hopefully it's an upgrade but who knows. Jarred said it's connectors are 6G.
 
If I do not recall absolutely wrong, Jarred has said that these will be bigger/faster than the original SSDs and eventually maybe replace them in many contextx.
 
Here comes the "everything is subject to change"...
Personally the size does not bother me that much. I would much rather see some way to secure the SSDs inside the modules.
I shoot a lot of moving platforms (including aerials) and I do get rather frequently SSD disconnection "without ejecting". I have to then physically pull out the mag and re-set it again in the slot for it to appear to the brain.
Now I mostly resort to gaffer-taping the mags in the slots...

Now I mostly resort to gaffer-taping the mags in the slots...

Yes - but all that could have been achieved in the "normal-sized" REDMAGs. Again - I am not against the smaller mags making their way into main RAW recording. All I was saying was that the size was not the issue for me - it was the way the mags are secured inside the modules. This will not be solved by going to smaller mags...

EDIT: Hopefully the smaller size will allow for a new design of the side SSD module that has some sort of "door" that close (and secures) the MAG slot with - or without the MAG in it. This will also prevent dust creeping in when there's no MAG in the camera...

No sweat Sir, in my humble opinion smaller is better (lighter). The connection has never been an issue for me. What kind of work have you done where the cards would get loose? I would bet money on this, if they are moving away from larger SSD's there is more than just one or two reasons for it. I don't have any inside info at all. Anything that RED does is done with purpose and thought. I can't wait to see how this unfolds in the big picture of Dragon, Meizler, and whatever surprises RDC has in store for us.

By all means - smaller and faster - I am all for it. Right now the +/- 200MB/s speed of the current mags is the bottleneck when offloading to high-speed SSDs.
I just hope there will be some way to secure the mags inside the module. Having just seen the video Jarred posted at the beginning of this thread - that does not seems to be the case.
On a brand new module and mags this is not an issue. But on a well used ones it is not hard to get a momentary disconnection (without the mag actually falling out of the slot). This causes the mag to be ejected from the UI with a warning.
I have had this happen even during a walk in-between shots or while being transported in a car or a helicopter. The mag does not fall out. It just looses connection for a split second - which is enough to get the warning.
You then have to physically remove and re-insert the mag for it to appear again...
Pretty much every camera out there - even down to my GoPro - has a way to secure the media inside the camera. And lets face it - the mags aren't cheap - never mind the value of the data on them...
I do not shoot aerials without gaffer-taping the mag to the module...

A useful test (if not already in the QC suite) would be to place an Epic with the new Mini SSD module on a platform that can do a slow frequency sweep say 5Hz (jet noise) to 300Hz to determine if there are any break through resonant frequency modes that need to be damped.

If the new and old insert- locking mechanisms have similar stiffness, and the mini SSDs are lighter, this lower inertia should mean greater chance of contacts staying together (lots of other assumptions here).

I don't know if this a hair brained idea - but would there be any real benefit in having 2 x SSD slots for continuos recording ... or would this introduce a workflow that could create user error?

Benefit could include:
+) No on set downtime while a fresh card is readied
+) Longer takes
+) Optional RAID mirroring (or should the be RAED? ;)
+) Place to keep card
+) Ability to store backup Firmwares / Black shades at multiple temperature on the 'backup slot'

+1 on monitor flip !!

Flip is actually already in the camera code... just can't enable it till the post tools and SDK get updated to support it, which is incredibly more difficult and time consuming to implement than it sounds like it would be.

Peter, you sure that the mag is actually disconnecting? I thought that time and time again and then realized that by default one of the side handle buttons is set to eject. I would lock the keys on it, but whenever I installed new firmware I would forget and have problems for an hour or two until I remembered. Or are you actually getting a media removed error message? If so, you may need a new SSD side module.

Matt - I have my own set of key assignments to prevent any such a accidental eject. And - as you have pointed out - if that was a user-initiated eject (via button press) there would be no error message displayed.
Based on Jarred's post above, however, it looks like the MINI MAGs will fare much better in terms of the disconnection.
But call me paranoid - I will still gaffer-tape the mags when doing aerials until there is a proper way to "lock" the media inside the modules... ;o)

the image flip/mirror issue being in the next one would be a dream...

also I'm not sure how others feel on here but can we get the playback option back so you don't have to go down 2 levels to load clips? I miss the old layout on this small detail.

otherwise my favorite firmware by far!!
 
Flip is actually already in the camera code... just can't enable it till the post tools and SDK get updated to support it, which is incredibly more difficult and time consuming to implement than it sounds like it would be.
Please forgive my ignorance, but isn't the image flip feature being asked for just at the monitor level? As in not affecting the actual recorded image? How are RCX and the SDK affected by this? I hope this doesn't sound accusatory - I'm genuinely confused/curious.

The Record/Playback status indicator in the bottom left corner will toggle modes if you tap it.
