  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.26

Just installed the latest beta and I still get the aperture lock once I go past 1.8. This is weird since the first beta had no issue with it.

One thing I've noticed with certain unsupported Sigma lenses is that if you use them wide open and then use the "Advanced" tab in the aperture selection menu you can type in an exact value.

You'll need to go back to wide open or it will lock up on you again, but try just typing in f/4 when wide open.

Any chance that RED will ever give Scarlet owners such as myself 23.98 - 24 FPS at 5K? I loved all of the FPS changes that the new Beta Build gave me but I'd LOVE to be able to use my 5K... That would be SO AWESOME.

Pretty please 3k @ 50fps / HDRx 3k @ 25fps :)

They've said so many times before, that won't happen. Even if it did, could you imagine the storm of rage coming from Epic owners?

I agree. What can happen though is 4.5kws at 6:1 or 7:1 24p. Now that the red one is out. That would be fantastic.

Only my personal opinion, and many will disagree with me, but if the hardware can do it, why not offer it to the customer? So, some people will bitch and moan... who cares. People always bitch and moan. Do these Epic owners actually want to see Scarlet owners be limited in what they can shoot?... to try to hamstring other filmmakers because they happened to pay more for their camera? That's the whole "pulling up the ladder behind you" mentality that I have never liked.

I don't want to pull up the ladder. You're right. If the hardware can do it why not. Although I really like to know that before I go and buy my Epic for twice the price. It's not like they say: "Holy shit, I just flipped this switch here and the Scarlet now shoots at 1000fps."

So, I bought a camera two years ago, and suddenly people will be able to have the same camera with the same capabilities for half the price? So what... this happens every 2 years with computers, every two years with cell phones... with all technology.

I think if a person ever finds themselves in a position of arguing to limit the capabilities of another person's camera -- FOR ANY REASON -- they should re-evaluate life. Do you really want to impose restrictions on other filmmakers -- to hold them back -- based on your own narrow self interest?

For those who are looking at these matters from strictly a business perspective... it is not the responsibility of any camera maker to support your business model. Their job is to make the best cameras possible at the best price possible, and to put technology into the hands of customers as quickly as possible. At least, that is how I see things.

Not the same thing. So suddenly your iPhone 3 became an iPhone 5? And I DON'T want to re-valuate life... Please. I don't have a ton of cash to spend on a camera but I did put everything on an Epic because I wanted 5K and slowmo. I don't want to hold anyone back, however I would've wanted to know if the Scarlet would be upgrade-able to become an Epic just by a firmware upgrade. In that case I could have spent half of the cash on some other stuff. Just saying, not that it's gonna happen.

With tech, sometimes we get lucky on our purchases, sometimes we are unlucky.. I have bought expensive computers, only to have a newer, more powerful model announced a week later. Things happen.

My point is, I don't think it's right to try to cripple or restrict other people's cameras, based on self interest.

Exactly, Scarlet is perfectly capable of doing 5KWS and maybe even 5K FULL @24/25fps if unlocked in the firmware,
but it HAS NOT the horsepower to deal with high fps datarate.

So I think giving Scarlet owners the chance to finally output a REAL 4k (from subsampled 5K minus the res lost with debayering) is now almost essential!

The RED range of cameras would be real 4K and your investment as an Epic owner is safe!

;)

Essential is it?? Then I demand that Apple unleashes the secret processor so my 2-year old MacBook becomes a Mac Pro.
And Tom, please stop saying that I restrict others based on self interest. I'm not like that at all. All I'm saying is that I too would have bought a Scarlet if I knew that it could turn to an Epic. But it can't so I didn't buy a Scarlet. But if something magical would happen that the Scarlet became an Epic (5K-wise) then I would regret not buying one. Simple as that.

100% agree with you Tommaso

While I don't own an Epic, I could understand why some Epic owners may take offense to a Scarlet 5K. But I'm also a Scarlet-X owner that paid full price for my camera just a couple months before NAB 2013's price changes. How can I possibly EVER be upset with progress and/or advancement. Now I would have loved to have purchased my camera those couple months later for less or maybe even an EPIC for that matter. But such is the way of the world.

Ok, so what about say, a purchasable firmware build via RED.com. I personally wouldn't be opposed to THAT for say $1,000 - $2,000 depending on Build to UNLOCK 5KWS at maybe 60FPS MAX. It's still NOT Epic capability but it's also not 5K as limited for Scarlet Owners as it is NOW. Is something like THIS doable for RED...

If so, I have my $2,000 ready TODAY and I'm sure a ton of other Scarlet owners do as well. I LOVE RED... LOL.

I'm second in line. Count me in on that build purchase. I'm sold.

Lol I wouldn't mind that but I think if it's current hardware is capable of anything more at 5k, it likely caps off around 24-25fps. For $9500 you can get 5K at 60fps plus extended dynamic range and low light from a Dragon upgrade in a few months!

i am an epic owner and i think it would be great...why not just because they actually find a way to squeeze out 24fps 5K (at probably something like 12:1) of scarlet, it does not make it an epic in any way....

Yes, 4.5k seems realistic. Very few Epic movies show more than 4.5k on the screen. It's always windowed for reframing, stabilizing, 3D adjustment. 4.5k would not upset epic owners, and would pleased scarlet owners that are still limited to 4k even after the big red one sale.
