  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys,

just trying to see what each of you is using to get Dragon R3D 6k FULL Rez play on Red Cine X.

Please list the Hardware, Mac Pro Tower, Mac Pro Trash Can, HP720, HP820, or what you are using and do include what Graphic Card or if you are using a Red Rocket X... Thanks!!

I have been working with some one to make Dragon R3D files fly and want to see what every one else is using and how I might actually come to the rescue of those that do not yet have a solution good enough for them... ;)

Also, since we are at it, please do list any specific requests you might have and or want form your absolute DRAGON DREAM Work Station system... And price range you are looking for to pay for it, been realistic of course...

Thanks again for playing... ;)

The main reason I am asking is because after going thru hell trying to finish our first Dragon 6k projects, I have come back to the US with one main goal in mind, which was to find a solution, and I did...

But before I propose it to this community with a possible Group Buy of this particular Station and it's solution/s I wanted to know exactly what every one else is currently using with their Dragon 6k workflow, and then I'll be able to move forward with that knowledge base in mind and bring to fruition the best solution/s possible at the appropriate price range vs. the capacity of the system/s.

Suggest we keep this exercise aimed at solutions that do not use an RR-X card.

Once video out is enabled and the firmware is more mature, RR-X should support real time playback of any R3D file you throw at it, on any decent host. Power, cooling, a late model mobo, fast storage, etc but nothing exotic.

If Jeff or any of the other hard cores jump in on this, I'd love a primer on the impact of single precision vs double precision architecture for motion imaging applications. Had some interesting discussions at NAB with some vendors noting that gaming GPUs were a false economy and that "proper" graphics boards were worth the substantially higher prices. BS?

Read from Nvidia post

Q: What’s required to do 4K and above real–time debayering?
A: There are so many variables (which camera, file format, frame rate) that it’s not possible to give one definitive answer. However, a single Quadro K6000 in a workstation with dual 12–core Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 Processors offering 16 GB of RAM would be able to handle any combination we’ve come across with ARRI, Canon, RED, or Sony.

I am actually worried about making this a sticky as there will be commercial ramifications that follow this, but I'll consult with the "real adult" mods.

I will say that myself, Ketch, and two other Redusers I know of have spoken to "certain entities" about building similar systems. You will see a couple of unique products likely in the range of $4-$16k depending on just how beefy your needs are.

The tests we performed were indeed RRXless and were performed with the w9100 were RCX played Dragon R3D 6k FF at Full Rez... and I was in a WOW here we go moment, especially so for me for future planned work were we'll have lots of Still Frame pulling and seen the images in Full Rez is crucial... Rendering not so much... Then we added a Second w9100 card and wee were flying...

Then there is still room to add a third and even a fourth w9100 for truly Heavy Rendering lifting at insane times...

But before I pull the plug on it I wanted to really see what every one here thinks and will only go for it if I see that my solution is superior to any other solution presented, and also of course need to bring in to account the economic ramifications of this...

However if a Group Buy can bring a relief to the economics factor of getting in to such a system, then with great pleasure I'll do what possible to make it happen, should what we are working on come to be the system to go for it...

And the beauty is of course that it can grow as the needs do, likely starting with NO w9100 card at all, and add one, or 2 or 3 or 4 as needed, meaning grown the system potential and power as the business needs require and as economics allow.

Heh. Well that is the big question. How much would folks be willing to pay for a turnkey solution.

Well, I am working on putting together 2 systems with 2 configurations...

Low end system with bottom and top configurations, and high end system with low and top configurations.

For me I am looking to play Dragon 6k R3D at Full rez all day long, but don't care how slow Rendering is, at list not for now, but if I get the high end bottom system then I can upgrade it as I go when the needs for Rendering will change.

So let's see what fellow Reduser are doing for their Dragon 6k workflow and what they are looking for and see if we can provide with at list 4 solutions to fit those needs.

Those cards Neil are using are $$$. So, the question is how many of them do you need for realtime without a RR-X? If i need 4 of them as he was demoing....I'll pass. At $2K a card that $8K just for the cards that take up 4 PCI slots which would leave very few for other PCI-e cards etc. So, that begs the question, why wouldn't you just buy and use a RR-X?

Well the cards we used, the AMD Firepro w9100 are actually just about double that at $3,900 each...

Good news is that with just one Dragon 6k R3D's at Full rez play like they do on the MBPr at 1/8th... More Cards more power, but this will really only help in Multitasking and Rendering times.

No need for all the fuss. Just buy a fully loaded nMP and get busy. I'm editing 6K RED Raw native in FCPX in real-time without a RR card. Fuckin amazing!

No fuss... We are doing the exact same thing...

Just wanted to find out what others are doing and with what and at what cost, to see if it is worth for me to bring my solution to the community with possible Group buy...

So, what is that you are using and what is the total cost?

Btw, you are waiting to buffer, and then the splay back catches up an stops then restarts, even it does it fast, the system we tested do this immediately and continually NO stops and go.

Any ways, it's good progress without RRX card, but are you running maxed system at about 9.5k?

There is no playback buffering in FCPX 10.1.1 with a nMP working with 6K RR native files - and you can access the RCX controls directly. Amazing

There is rendering time but for my work (not ultra time stressed TV / Commercial projects) it's no big deal. Question is more about your mission and what seconds of wait are worth in cost premium. If working on Spiderman then it is performance at any cost and have LightIron hook you up. If working on personal projects then it is strictly a personal decision. For me, I'm ok with a couple seconds of rendering time. Gives a moment to reflect and a sip of Peet's Dark Roast coffee

For a windows box, Dual GTX Titans (now Titan Blacks) have a lot of kick to them and plenty of RAM.

My mistake when building my rig was not a fast enough RAID to render 4k uncompressed and for 6k R3D, the CPUs choke up. The GPUs can't be fed fast enough with my 2.6 Ghz 16 core rig. With dual 8 core 3.3 Ghz or dual 10 core 3 Ghz 6k realtime on gpu should be very possible.

I'll probably end up getting a RRX anyway to free up the CPU and GPUs a bit for Resolve processing and codec rendering. Has anyone tested how much CPU and GPU is used up when RRX is helping with the heavy lifting?

Please ignore this request, if non RRX purity is the goal,. However, since I, for one, do not know the full potential of the RRX, in an external enclosure and most everyone has a MBr handy, during larger productions, what can would a configuration of external hardware to achieve the stated goals? Alternatively, what would a lower end system cost, if added to the external RRX, to equal the performance of a RRXless configuration, that achieves the stated goals?

Again, just ignore if not in this thread purview.

Thank you very much

Fury

Video out is not enabled on RRX???????? Can you use an Ultrastudio or Decklink to get the video out of RCX to a proper monitor? Don't mean to threadjack...
