  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon 6k R3D RCX Full Rez... What Station you'r doing this with?

Getting real time full rez with a 2690v2, titan black SC (cuda) and 128gb ram at most compression ratios.
High compression uses much less CPU power for some reason. Anyone know why?

Is that dual 2690v2 or just a single 10 core? I get just under realtime dragon with dual 2670 Xeons and dual titans blacks.

If you're able to get realtime with just a single 10 core, clock speed could be important here.

... and so the adventure begins, for better or worse, setting down a new path...HERE WE GO!

Lets try and be as specific as possible when regarding software, GPU's, compression etc. Realtime 6K FF at 18:1 is different than realtime 4:1 as is realtime within RCX vs FCX vs Resolve.

Dunkan - I'll echo Alan's question as well, single or dual Xeon and what kind of compression are we talking? Also, any experience with 64GB vs 128?

More memory doesn't really benefit playback, but i like to have a fast ramdisk :)

compression 1:6 to 1:17 in real time

Dual xeons 2690v2 3.0 ghz
Titan Black OC (after burner program)
+300 mhz memory
+165 mhz core clock
+104 power
32GB ramdisk / 80GB reserved for RCX 1600mhz

Nice Christopher.

What was your final config for that system?

I look forward to your results.

Config on the previous page... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...ng-this-with&p=1358843&viewfull=1#post1358843

I've just loaded up my only Dragon clip. (6k 24p RC 5:1) It's definitely playing back real time at 1/2 debayer. Looks pretty good at Full Debayer too, the footage is fairly static so I can't quite tell if there is any stuttering. (No Rocket, 2 GTX 780s, FAST RAID & 128 GB RAM)

Anybody got racing footage or chase scenes I can look at?

I have been very specific Jason, read thru, we played at Full Rez 6K FF Dragon R3D's 24p recorded at a 4:1 compression, I always use LOWEST compression possible... ALWAYS.

Gotcha. Yeah you've got 4 more CPU cores and 400 mhz on each core more than me. That extra oomf must feed the Titans better than my 2670s can do, as my Titans never go higher than 50% utilization on 6k footage. But 4k and 5k footage I've seen them hit 80 percent utilization.

Getting 99% GPU usage in playback Does adding a second titan increase playback speed?

i still don't really understand which monitor actually shows 6k FF at 100%.....6K 1/2 at 100% barely fits on a 4k monitor....and that is plenty for pulling stills and checking crucial focus....when working on one 4k monitor with controls this goes down to 1/4 at 100% and even that is ok for most shots....
i have found that the key to pulling stills and checking focus is working on a 4k monitor......1/4 or even 1/2 on a 27"imac does not show critical focus....
i am just putting this out there because ketch isn't interested in render times....and neither am i....but i need to be able to scrub through my footage and pull stills....and you don't need a special wonder box to do that.....

Here's a question that is relevant and I want answers from "peeps".

- Targeted editing/color suite budget? $4k? $8k? $16k?
- How important is portability to you?
- Connectivity. I know what I need to connect to in terms of I/O, what do you want?
- Windows 7 or 8? :)

I'm not so focused at the moment for full debayer realtime 6K playback as I mainly use that for QC purposes, though useful for color work. 6K FF at REDCODE 4:1/5:1 is demanding. 1/4 and 1/2 resolution are desirable today for 1080p NLE setups. I can see that also working well for 4K display setups.

Ketch - I meant that as a general message "to the group or newcomers" to the discussion not necessarily referring to anyone specifically. Your info has been great, as has many others so far. Lets keep it going, lots of good discussion.

Phil - I think it's safe to say the majority diving into the 6K RT arena are in the 8K to 16K ballpark and I'd venture to say Windows 7 with less emphasis on portability since most field users would just grab a RR-X for heavy lifting (I assume given the circumstances of speed and mobility).

Paul - I agree. What monitor are you referencing with currently?

I just got the 24" dell....very nice color and the resolution is a little bit of a life changer I have to say....
i also just got my 8 core nmp and it is a little bit of a revelation as well....got frustrated working on a project with my previous setup which included a rocket....this is just a different planet....a 5k project in fcpx 5 layers of 5k clips all with several effects and heavy fade ins and transparency settings....I am not saying it just plays it back like it is nothing but I can work in real time with some stutter ( when these extreme situations come up)....
I am not doing special effects or Spider-Man 5 so I don't see why I would need more right now....I am not sure the GPUs are maxed out, I will be adding more ram in the next week and once a super duper 30 core chip comes out, I might switch that in.....other then that I am a very happy camper.....
most important: pulling stills in rcx, fcp or resolve is a dream....

For now, there's nothing unless you run a 4K monitor plus another 2.5K monitor (or 4K) and span the two, but that still doesn't get you the height. I guess one could build a 4-monitor array to view full resolution. ;)

I'm perfectly content working in half-res and then I pop into 1:1 pixels at full quality to spot-check here and there.

For pulling stills, same deal, I pull my frames as R3D and/or TIFF snapshots and then go into Photoshop. Then it's just like any other RAW still from a DSLR. Sure, we will zoom to 1:1 pixels or whatever we need, depending on what we're doing.

i have found that the key to pulling stills and checking focus is working on a 4k monitor......1/4 or even 1/2 on a 27"imac does not show critical focus….

Totally agree here. Once you start working on a high resolution monitor, be it 4K or even a lower-resolution "retina" display on the MBPr or similar laptop screens, that makes a huge difference. Looking at pixels on a typical screen at 72~100 dpi, just doesn't show you the same level of detail. And I think as more people start to really grasp this concept and embrace it, the hardware and software makers will follow suit. Ultimately this resolution game is not so much about 4K, 8K, etc.. or defined formats. It's about appropriate DPI or visual density to be delivered to the desired viewing medium. High quality print work can easily exceed 400dpi. Thus the reason behind so-called 'retina' screens on hand-held devices or other applications where viewing conditions are similar to that of high quality photos. Desktop displays need to catch up.

Very true. My 8-core nMP with D700 GPUs is a little wonder box that does exactly this. It's not the monster in Resolve that I would like it to be, but it still holds its own in Premiere just fine with 5K RED footage. I guess I'll get a better feel for 6K Dragon footage soon. So far it handles the clips I have just fine for most common tasks I deal with. Of course, the more powerful dual Xeon systems with superior GPUs are still better, but the price also starts ramping up quite rapidly. We can talk all we want about how the new Mac Pro is "expensive" and yes, it is. However, building a PC "on a budget" that is still capable of beating it isn't going to be a whole lot cheaper. If you want to beat the pants off the new Mac Pro, or even an older Mac Pro tower, or older HP Z workstation or whatever, be prepared to spend some serious $$$$.

With that, I echo Phil's comment above. What sort of budget are we aiming for here? A fully loaded new Mac Pro is around $10K. A fully loaded HP Z820 or Dell T76xx can more than double that. Build the equivalent yourself, you might save 15~20%, assuming your time is worth nothing or not factored in. Buying from a different vendor like ProMax, Origin, or one of those guys will cost as much as the HP or Dell, but may give you some more creative configuration options.

As for the Windows OS, I think Windows 7 still has advantages over Windows 8. Not to mention, it isn't polluted by the touch-centric Metro interface and full-screen apps with retro flat design that looks like Microsoft dusted off Windows 2.0 from 1989. That said, it's rapidly becoming a Windows 8.1 world for the latest software and peripherals, and there's really no point in avoiding it.

Din't said that...

What I said my ideal workflow I look to do with this Machine is by been able to PLAY my Dragon 6K files at FULL with viewing SET @ Fit Both NOT 100%, I go to 100% and move form pixel to pixel for critical focus decision on a particular image amongst an other to choose the very best amongst them, and then take it to my regular Still workflow thru Photoshop etc.

I built my current system for $10k so for me that is the sweet spot.

I don't need a portable system as it lives in the edit suite.

Connectivity: I need one slot for the Areca card to connect to my Maxxdigital SAS raid.

Windows 7 or 8? Either one, although with 8 I would have to run the classic shell mod to get the Windows 7 look as I hate the 8 design.
