  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DR ..a good discussion!!

I just realized there was a Scarlet-W Xyla in the OP. Sorry!

Thanks so much for including this. Having this XYLA to push and pull around in Resolve has been so useful.

Based in my grades so far with this xyla and actual footage, I can say that iso 320 is the quietest starting point.
DEB off, no NR, and Contrast/Pivot/Offset to taste got me the most dynamic range out of this camera.
Resolve's Lum vs Sat curve was much more accurate than DEB to my scope and eyes, at least in the very lowest part of the range.

Any other suggestions?

Also why is the Arri so defined on the XYLA? Built in NR?

Haven't read this thread so forgive me if I'm beating a dead horse, but I found Cioni's/Panavision's perspective on the DR of Montro to be reasonable (and something I think most of us have expected for quite some time).

Basically says, 'the sensor may see ~20stops, but we have found "Sweet 16" to be the most useable; any more than that and you're trying to pull stops out of the weeds [noise]...'

Maybe with Gemini, because it's so clean, the DR seems more apparent/easy to play with, but I'm pretty sure from Dragon onwards we've been dealing with ~15-16 useable stops (with the VV sensors having an edge because the downscale and/or pixel pitch makes noise less noticeable/destructive).

There is more than downscale and pixel pitch that differentiates monstro from dragon. Monstro is way cleaner even on a pixel by pixel comparision. Which makes the "weeds" less pronounced and the usable DR much greater. Monstro got crystal clean blacks where dragon does not hold up.
