What's up fellas. Fairly new on here as I'm looking into the Red eco system with the Raven.

Just wanted to get some advice from those of you who have shot docs / run&gun type jobs with any of the red cameras. Appreciate any input.

I use Zacutos Recoil shoulder rig. I've made a custom shoulder pad for it but the position of the camera, is what is best as you can ballance it to get the load off your arms to your shoulder. Sony VCT plate for tripod is also great as you can keep the shoulder pad on it and it's still well ballanced when on the tripod. The other good point is that the camera center of gravity gets as low as possible when on your shoulder. You can add some 15mm rods (height is perhaps not standard) and some handels with arri style rosette (their handles on the 15mm rods are useless).

Miller solo tripod is what I use. I put the legs in my suitcase with the Panther head.

I use the RED DSMC Quickrelease platform with 19mm rods / Oconnor O Grips or CAS grips / Oconnor CFF-1 Follow Focus or sometimes No FF at all / Allen Gorden Shoulder Pad wrapped directly around the camera rather than on your shoulder - Ive seriously tried dozens of shoulder pad setups and this is my favorite because is light, small and keeps the camera low on your shoulder and is very comfortable.

For Travel Doc shoots I take my Miller Carbon 100mm sticks and Oconnor 1030D head. Lenses are obviously going to be job specific but I have been using the new Angenieux Optima Style lenses and loving them 16-40 & 28-76 and of course the Fuji Cabrio 19-90 with the servo is always a good doc lens but it is going to make the camera front heavy. I love the Switronix Hypercore Batteries as well for doc stuff because you have the actual TIME readout on the back of the batt so you know exactly how much time you have. The Red Side Handle with Red Volts is essential so you never have to power down and just hot swap - VERY important for doc shooting. I prefer the 5" Red monitor off set to the left of the lens with a Hoodman velcroed to it. I don't like shooting doc stuff with a EVF because I like to look around to anticipate my next move. I also use a Heden motor that mounts on the directly on my Optimos with a Duclos mount and works with a Preston microcforce controller that mounts to the CAS or Oconnor grips - servo zooming is a great feature in doc work so you can work fast and get smooth moves:)

This is the shoulder pad

Thanks for all the input so far. Appreciate the insight from you Red veterans.

I use a WC v2 shoulder rig and Miller sticks with a DSMC Quick release platform/Dovetails (and a Optitron 2 FF with Sigma Art lenses and Canon L zooms.)
Great match for most R&G scenarios, easy to balance and it's pretty lightweight and easy to pack/transport.

How do you like the Optitron 2 Robert?

I'm slightly jealous.

Our LATITUDE range will have the thumbwheels (what MIKA showed), plus ROCKER and FORCE ZOOM versions, plus a rail-mounted (manual style) knob and more very soon... :) Oh and it works with internal motors (EF, Nikon) as well as via external motors for PL.

Raven and run-and-gun was the target... but actually it's suitable right up to full cinema by adding more stuff

Thanks for sharing Mikael. Setup looks awesome. I'd be looking into something similar in terms of form factor.

The thumbwheel looks pretty remarkable, and hadn't seen that one yet. This might make me rethink using manual focus lenses. Does it require any sort of power source?

Yes! The camera doesn't provide power on the port it uses (CTRL) so you have two options...... The standard latitude has a 2pin lemo for power (so you can attach it to an output from one of the larger RED modules, or a DTAP source)... We also have a BATTERY POWERED version, basically a plate for a Canon LP-E6 battery cut directly into the metal case. For super light weight run and gun this might make sense!

6K resolution requires proper FF IMO.
It will be very difficult to get good results with a thumb wheel. It's difficult enough with an FF....

You will probably need a Variable ND of some sort for rapid B-Roll type shots, otherwise you will probably miss a bunch of shots swapping NDs.

Heliopan is pretty solid (but does have a slight green cast). I've heard good things about Genus Eclipse as well. Most Variable NDs are pretty terrible so pick wisely.

Raven is 4.5K, so you're really in a pretty well-understood area... Run and gun is totally possible at a sensible f-stop! Our friends at RVZ are experts in this type of rig :)

(p.s., you can add our wireless hand unit for full remote FF with top-tier wireless RF link, so we have all bases covered)
