  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

thanks dan!
it seems like most of the cables except the motor cable comes with the handset, right?

Mine came with short, medium and long cable, 3 handset rings, 1 clamp, two antennas (for handset - one back up), three or four zip gears, handset and motor, lazer cut small pelican style case.

It's a good deal.

So got the DJI focus...
charged it.
hooked it up.
connected it with the motor by pushing the little pin hole button.
went to calibration.
Selected Automatic.
The motor drags the lens to both end stops. (a little FD 17mm with not much tork needed and quite short focus swing)
Then the hand controller stays at "begin.."

Edit: Upgraded firmware on both control and motor... calibration now gets to "Done" I click done and then back to main menu....

Then spinn the hand control wheel... and nothing. The bar just stays at 0% when I spin the focus wheel... Starting to think I got a faulty unit but really hope it´s just me not reading the manual properly.. but I been trough it now five times still does not find anything that I done wrong.
:(

I can sellect stop or back if I select stop I can calibrate again, if I select back I get back to the menu but I can not move the lens by spinning the dail on the controller.. What to do?
I assume the calibration should say done when the calibration is done why does it not Finnish the calibration?

Any tip for a new would be much appreciated?

Got it to work, after a few settings / Default / restore /

Now it calibrates like a charm.

Super nice respons feel on this unit better than a lot of hand controlers I tested that cost atleast 5 times as much. Happy.

Now this thing is going to be used extensively. Interested to so how it last. With the rental rates I can pul its paid of in 2 weeks, love it.

I got the right angle cable, but at 15 inches it's a bit short. It's fine on the Red since the camera is short in length, but on my long-ish Sony FS7, the cable does not reach. I wish they had made it 18 inches.

I returned it and wow, the return process at DJI is tedious and long to say the least. Almost 2 1/2 weeks from Fed-Ex'd it till they acknowledged they received it (and DJI in Carson, CA. is only 15 miles from my house). And they say another 8-10 business days before the actual refund. If it takes this long to return a cable, makes me a bit worried about their repair / warranty times.

The unit seems to work fine. It did freak out one time (the LED went semi-blank like only the bottom half was on), but then it came back after 30 seconds or so. Really weird. But it does focus really smooth. Just hope it lasts.

Mines done about 25 days, no problems. Paid itself off quickly. My only bitch is I've already lost both hard stop screws. I'd put some lock tight on them before going out.

No, I believe Carson, CA. is their warehouse or something as I noticed that's where the cable came from and where they told me to ship it back to.. They have an office in Burbank, but I don't think you can buy from it.

Hi,

I tested the DJI Focus last night on my Lomo RoundFront Anamorphic lens. This lens extends massively through the entire near-to-far focus range and it's seriously heavy lens and fairly stiff. Can't believe it worked:

Wish DJI supplied me with a right angle cable to power the unit though! i'm looking into a right-angle cable to power the motor from a 2pin lemo if anyone is interested (so you can power the unit direct from the REDs 2Pin Aux power like from a Quickplate Module?

Yeah and I know, I need a haircut and the iPhone footage is the wrong framerate etc etc ...

: )

D tap notch? Or ptap

D tap notch? Or ptap

Hey red gurus
so I got this focus unit and love it one thing I notice is the supplied cables are I believe d tap and don't work with my battery plate etc? I believe all my batteries are p tap but there's a weird both in the cable. Is that the difference between ptap and dtap anyone else have this problem?

Ya it won't fit. I ended up using the DJI ronin-m power distributer $99 with DJI batteries. Just attached to my tripod when I'm not using it on my ronin-m. But again I bought the distributer for the ronin to power my cam while on the ronin, not just for this problem. I'm sure U can buy another cable that will work off p-tap from some store Online if u don't have ronin-m or don't want to buy their distributer.

Everyone who has this issue just files it down or cuts it with a wire cutter - or replace with a genuine AB p-tap end. P-tap/d-tap = same exact thing. The "key" on the DJI one is common in many Chinese p taps as a way to additionally protect polarity as a "real" Ptap is easily plugged in wrong way round. Hope that helps!

I have DJI FOCUS and love it, and try to put monitor and video transmission together.
Now, it was done:

Did that and it works great!!!

Sorry if this is a silly question or has been answered but how would I power the motor in my situation? I have a Dragon with the Quickplate back with the two, two pin lemon
outputs and Red Bricks with no built in D-tap. Looks like the DJI Focus only comes with D-tap cables? I can run it on my Ronin using the D-tap off the Ronin's battery but what about
when I have my camera configured on its own? Again, sorry if this is a silly question. My first experience with wireless focus and just trying to figure out how to set it up
before I commit to buying.

Thanks,
Daniel

I take my battery off the ronin along with the power distributer and use that to power the focus while on tripod or jib, just attach it on with pouch with velcro strap. A lot of the v-mount modules have xtra p-tap outs also. or buy a brick with p-tap.

Any one that has a good solution for solo operating the ronin with dji focus?

I use normal accessory mount on the top bar but then the wheel is a bit far from the handle which does not really matter when operating with armor man but I think there must be a better way.
