DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

I have DJI FOCUS and love it, and try to put monitor and video transmission together.
Now, it was done:

You can get it :

That looks great!! What are you using for video transmission?

I take my battery off the ronin along with the power distributer and use that to power the focus while on tripod or jib, just attach it on with pouch with velcro strap. A lot of the v-mount modules have xtra p-tap outs also. or buy a brick with p-tap.

Okay, thanks Brody. Going to try your suggestion about taking the Ronin battery off or just buying a couple of batteries with P-tap built in.

Any word if DJI has updated the motor?, They could have gained a lot of traction if they'd jumped on it. Or maybe it's not their main money maker so they are turning a blind eye. Which would be a shame for them, it's like a cancer left un checked, slowly it ruins the impression of your products as a whole. I went from reading page 1 of this thread excited, to page 21, confused, mad and scared to buy it.

Here's the deal with this product.

1. It's the best "cheap as f..." Follow focus system on the market.
2. In many ways it meets or surpasses other top shelf systems.
3. If you need 100% uptime and are someone who rents this out - buy a second motor for $549 as a backup.

4. Final thought - if you use DSMC2 cameras - do yourself a huge favor and get an RTmotion/OMOD (praying for the day my OMOD will ship - even more after trying it at NAB)

DJI focus is a great "basic" wireless focus system - just turn the knob and turn the lens, get the job done, go home, collect paycheck. This is something our industry needed, and it was delivered, the warranty exists and they fix pretty fast if busted, Just compare to the UTTER piece of shit that a Cinegears focus is - and somehow some people are satisfied with which I can't understand, or something like a Redrock - which seemed great at the time... But not by comparison (by the way I should mention I haven't used the new one - which looks really cool - and things Can change over time.

However what RTmotion is doing in terms of camera control with latitude is just fantastic and delivers on the promise of future forward human to camera interface. No joke. This is like the time you first used a computer mouse going from a keyboard with DOS, or if you like cars - the first time you got to drive with a manual transmission after watching dad for a long time.

Any idea how many Nm of torque the DJI motors have? That is the main thing I have run into with less than M-1s or Heden Motors. They just don't have the balls to drive every lens every time. The Red lens motor falls into that category. I really wanted to like it but it's got less than half the torque of a heden m26ve. Own two bartech systems, one digital, one analog. I have owned a bunch of other systems and the bartechs always come back out because they just work, all the time.

Do you have a link to the backup motor? Thanks!

Used Heden motors in the past. Do not know the exact Nm of the DJI´s but I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

D Tap is lethal!

Anyone interested in a group buy custom 2pin Lemo to DJI Focus 6pin lemo cable so you can run it out of the RED 2pin AUX port straight from camera/ RED cable-less Quickback V Lock plate? Anyone genuinely interested, please email me below.

Emailed you. It should work with any 2 pin input right?

I plan on getting the Follow focus and using the Letus Helix to power it when it's on the gimbal.

Not sure at this point in time. Just frustrating when you hear the stories of people blowing up devices via Dtap, especially in remote places where theres no semi-quick fix like a run to London & back.

And to be fair, on some batteries it's really easy to plug it in the wrong way in the heat of the moment. I tested a battery yesterday and it was actually EASIER to snugly plug it in the wrong way rather than the right way!! Also seen dinged batts where the casing has slipped which causes you to not be able to plug it into the v lock batts DTap port at all!

Anyway, I'll have a test cable in the next couple of weeks and go from there if that's ok? Really is just an idea at this stage. Never done a group buy before, hell, I don't even have a website/facebook! Not sure how many redusers with a Dji focus would be interested either??

Just thinking 2pin lemo is a much safer way to run the motor if you have 2pin Lemo AUX power ports available on your cam system. I power my wireless sdi eclipse TX unit via 2pin lemo also. If you have a +1 adaptor and a RED Quickback cable-less plate, you actually have 3 AUX ports (you just need a RED 4pin to 2pin lemo adaptor for the +1 module) so plenty of options.

Let me know if anyone is interested via PM or email. Thanks Note for your interest.

Note for Note: Letus Helix Lemo is wired with AMERICAN power standard : Pin 1 is hot, pin 2 is ground.

Red battery plate lemo is wired the CORRECT way aka EURO style aka ARRI style : Pin 2 Hot, pin 1 ground.

Hope that helps ;)

So I got my motor back from service, and they screwed it up somehow. So, it s back on it s second trip around the world. I still believe in the unit, and i am sure i got a dud. Got me a second system, wich was the plan all along, so I can give iris control over to the dop.
I can t believe they haven t come up with a run stop cable yet, it s killing me. Maybe some group pressure may be applied?
The new system works fine, but I find the motor when plugged and standing by feels like its always under pressure, it vibrates a bit continuously.
Anyone came accross that?

Cheers everyone

Why would they update it if it's an isolated issue? You heard of a couple, that doesn't warrant an overhaul but perhaps a QC issue. I've done 40 production days on mine, no problems. My AC's love this thing. For the price it has no equal but they actually prefer it over Carat and other units costing almost triple the price. I bought it for gimbal use and it's a rock star. Unfortunately, they haven't made a dual channel mod, so when I need to pull IRIS I end up having to rent an FI unit.
