  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

Hey guys have you ever had any problems with weight regulations for flying abroad with the ronin with its case? I knew the thing was huge and heavy but its case scared the shit out of me :D

I had a flight with the ronin without its case, too big. Just put the Ronin and the accessories in a cabin case with some protection and voila ! But you will have to explain what it is for each flight :-)

Thanks for the info Guillaume, I'm gonna test my luck with the whole package, If I succeed I will post here to let anyone know if they are thinking about the same thing:)

Hi Peter,

Does this have to be a "wired" connection or can you use Futaba's wireless trainer system with the 14 MZ or the 18 MZ?

Thanks.

Hi Wayne,

the Lightbridge uses physical connection to the Tx and takes over all wireless communications to the Rx. So you basically disable radio transmitting on the Tx altogether. Even if the Lightbridge did support wireless connection to the Tx (which it doesn't), I would recommend against using it, as you will end up with "too much radio chatter" and possible loss of range to Tx due to interference. One of the main advantages of the Lightbridge is that you can connect two Tx'es to it and program one to control the camera gimbal and the other the platform moving it (helicopter, car, etc...). I really like how the Lightbridge simplifies all the wiring and reduces the wireless traffic. Normally on a RC heli we would have 4 wireless signals - 1x pilots Tx/Rx to the heli, 1x FPV camera feed for the pilot, 1x Camera Op's Tx/Rx to the gimbal and 1x main camera feed for the Camera Op. Now all four of these can be taken care of by a single link in the Lightbridge...

You will be fine as long as you remove the LiPo battery and take it with you in your carry-on.
Make sure to tape over the contacts on the battery.
Also - arrive well in advance for your flight. Generally it is easier to check in larger cases early on and it will also give you time to explain things if needed...

Thank you Peter, the battery tip is golden!

Lot of people don't realize that the Ronin's (and Phantom's) batteries are LiPo's as they don't look anything like your average LiPo.
Main advantage of being LiPo is that they charge really fast.
But LiPo's are a huge No-No for checking luggage - people have paid $10K fines for doing just that...

Okay people....I wanted to share some important information about the DJI "XL arms" and our new CineMilled Arm Extensions. I made a video where I go into and explain exactly whats involved with the "XL arms" and WHY our solution is better!! Take a look and make your decision.

CineMilled DJI Ronin Arm extensions!!

CineMilled DJI Ronin Arm extensions!!

Now you can use a battery on the back of your epic. No need for side batt mount plate or otherwise useless "slim" IDX batteries....... So proud and happy to announce our RONIN ARM Extensions!!

Buy Them right now at http://cinemilled.com/product/dji-ronin-armextenders/

Make sure to watch the FULL tutorial video....yes it's long but packed with VITAL information you should know before you go off into large camera/ronin builds.

FYI Extended Ronin fits nicely inside the Ronin case....no mods!!

Thanks Pedro for the hardwork. But... Can't wait for the Exoskeleton now with all the weight added!!!

You know......people loose sight of the fact that these gimbals are really just really cheap really small ......libra head, flight head, scorpio heads........they are just great small stabilized remote heads!!

Honestly 80% of the time I spend shooting with the Ronin.......it is mounted to something.

I think holding it in your hands is such a small part of what it can do. I think it's really just for hand off's and such.....otherwise it's really much better mounted to something.

Be it a easyrig, steadicam, crane, jib, dolly, cablecam, any number of vehicle mounts....

Honestly.....there is so much more to do with it when your are NOT holding it.

Get some mounts and expand your shooting envelope.

Look at the cool shots I got when I mounted my ronin to the Roof of my car.

I know, I already own your plate to adapt on my steadicam and my crane :) And can't wait to attach it on vehicules. But for now, most of jobs I do require handled Ronin ;)

Pretty cool on the roof of the car....how were you monitoring ? or just freestyle ?

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but DJI has the new firmware up on the download site here: http://www.dji.com/product/ronin/download I accidently left my dovetail plate on a rented Epic that we flew last week so I can't mount my camera to the Ronin to update the firmware. You can probably imagine just how pissed I am right now. I will be very curious to see just how much better the horizon holds during acceleration after the update. They mention the horizon issue in the update notes.

My wife was driving, I was sitting passenger with a 6" monitor and my remote. Wireless HD link using my paralinx arrow.

Pedro, you need to extend the top horizontal arm as well so the three axis of rotation intersect in one spot. Having the pan offset from the tilt like that will cause all sorts of optical issues when handheld...

:sifone: Peter

You must of not watched my video.....

Anyways, it will be available soon.

Not really required for all builds, maybe if you were extending the camera out 80mm....but we are not doing that. As with a ultra prime, epic and rear battery I had the top handle fully extended and it balanced. remember our extensions are short compared to the DJI 80mm

On the other hand we have been shooting with our setups a lot recently...........never saw anything weird. But yes I get the mechanics of what you are saying.... But I haven't seen anything weird.

If you have proof of what you are saying I would love to see it......as in all my testing I saw nothing.

60mph car mounted on the race track following a drift car......looked great.

----------------

The biggest issue I have with DJI arms is the lengths they are making.

After ALOT of testing (we actually made 3 different sizes) we built the size we found thru testing to be the most appropriate.

If you find yourself with the DJI 80mm arms....and a long/heavy build the ronin will just not perform well at all. You end up shrinking the performance envelope so much that it is barely usable.

I honestly think that the size we making gives you more build options and a little bit more freedom with lens selection etc.... even with the short boost in arm length....you can already build a camera/lens setup that will challenge the ronin suprisingly strong motors!

I honestly would never go with anything longer than what we are making.

But if people want to go longer....well, like I pointed out in the video...our arm extensions are like "legos" you can just stack 2 of them....and you have 80mm longer arms. I don't recommend it.......but if you want to do it.....

I will repeat one of my favorite sayings...."Just because you CAN do it....doesn't mean you should."

Question wouldn't it be better to make a version 2 with everything added because its a great idea. Sooner or later you will need to update the motors due to the extra weight so everything will run smooth. If the is decided can't they add a steady cam setup for the cheap kind that doesn't come with the long part that has a hole in it? without that part how can I mount it to my fly cam.
