  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

Use umbrella? ;o)

The issue here really is the camera. You could protect the camera by putting it in a water-proof housing, but then it won't fit in the gimbal.
I will check what is the official Ronin's tolerance to rain - I can imagine short time in light rain might be ok as all the ports and motors are sealed, but don't take my word for it. In the meantime I am quite serious about the umbrella. If a client asked me to use the Ronin in the rain tomorrow - I would get one of those larger beach-type umbrellas and ask an assistant to hold it above the Ronin...

mount it with a magic arm to the top handle, did it once, it kind works.

Just posted on the DJI forum but not sure how responsive thing are over there, so thought I would give this a shot. So I just did a firmware update for my Ronin-M, GCU 1.6 and IMU 1.4, now I'm suddenly unable to use my iPhone app to control anything on the Ronin. I can't do anything without it saying "Device is calibrating". It's been like this for a couple of hours now. Any ideas? Anyway to revert to a previous version of the firmware? I'm kinda ticked that I might have a $1300 brick.

Update: Now it's vibrating and the motors are incredibly loud. Still won't connect.

Balancing pan axis Ronin in briefcase mode, possible?

Balancing pan axis Ronin in briefcase mode, possible?

Hi,

I've searched a bit over different forums about balancing Ronin for briefcase mode. I have a Ronin M with a camera setup that weighs under 2kg. Is it even possible to get good balance in briefcase mode?
Since DJI forum has the worst response rate I've seen  try asking here for your expertise on this forum

Since I can live and use my Ronin without using briefcase mode, I'am ok with that, but when using Ronin in circumstances where a good balance is necessary and the handle bar won't be perfectly horisontal in all angles I need to get better balance then I got right now. My problem is that if I tilt my Ronin from the handlebar say 5 degress i get a bad balance since the Ronin is only balanced for and when the pan axis is having the alignment of the handlebars as shown in the picture, that I screenshotted from PotatoJets video on Youtube.

Image didn't show up so I attached it below instead.

I can only get the same balance taking the last axis back and forth and i stay there when aligned to handlebars. Therefore briefcase mode is impossible and also when tilting the handlbarbase to 5 degress or from 2-10 degrees, infact it is just when then Ronin is perfectly horisontal that it is balanced.

I made a video a few days ago describing my Ronin briefcase mode issue.

Briefcase mode is something that I can live without but knowing if I can get better balance or its topped out already with pan axis would be terrific!

Shot this video yesterday:

85mm lens, Ronin M from a vehicle. Balance and motorsetting is key I understood.

But when tilting the rig 5 degrees problems starts to arise, its get off balance and therefore oscillation starts to happen which affect the image with extreme high micro vibration/shake in it, looks like defect optical image stabilisation to describe it and I feel when the motors starts to work like then while shooting the sequence.

One thing about the Ronin M is all the different batteries that has been included over the years, my Ronin has the middle sized supplied with Ronin M's around 2017. It weighs 60% of the original included with the Ronin M when it was released, this might affect the balancing. But if I see that as a factory/design flaw from DJI, but will investigate that.

Ok, sorry for a long post, and my first post here on this forum. But I tried to describe my problem the best I could.

Hopefully a gimbal can be better balanced then this!

HI guys,

I will try to shed some light on what may be happening here with the different balance issues going from standard mode to briefcase mode. On my Ronin when balancing the two tilt axis, especially the vertical tilt axis I get a slightly different balance read when the camera lens is pointing straight up as opposed to the lens pointing straight down. The reason for this is because the two pivot shafts for the tilt axis are either slightly out of alignment or the vertical tilt bars that support the camera plate, sensor and breakout box are putting stress on the two tilt pivot axis bearings. When you stress those two pivot bearing or put them under a twisting load it will cause the gimbal to give you a false balance point and depending on the severity of the bind it will make it nearly impossible to find the true balance point. This is why when you get the gimbal balanced in standard mode and then switch to briefcase mode the pan balance and roll balance shows as being off slightly or way out depending on your particular gimbal.

It is important to note that I have seen this very issue in just about every gimbal that has a bearing support for the tilt axis on both sides of the camera including Freefly's original multirotor mount, my own custom designed mounts and several others.

In a perfect world the pivot shaft for the support side of the gimbal, opposite side from the motor would have a machined ball on the pivot shaft that is centered in the support bearing so that if the camera mount tilt structure is not built perfectly square it will still have no binding or preloading issues on the tilt axis bearings.

I hope that this helps with understanding why everyone is getting different balance reading in different configurations.
