DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

Hey there,

I was shooting 2 Days with Nikon D800, 50mm using an EasyRig + Serene + Ronin from a quad driving down Berlin streets. I expierenced 2 problems. One is that shots are not that steady as I thought they would be. I think some of them are cause by to heavy shakings of the quad. But actually also in some smooth parts there are vibrations. The second problem is that when accelerating
the quad the ronin tilted up or down (depending what direction I was shooting). When shooting sidewards this effected the roll
axis which I couldnt correct without the remote. I talked to some operator and they didnt experience this with a Movi. Any ideas if this could be reduced or eliminated? I think this is a software problem where the acceleration forces effecting the IMU are misinterpreted.
As soon as I reach some serious WIFI I will upload some footage. Actually the footage is unuseable. I hoping that they will work as backround plates when out of focus.

Thanks in forward.

Vincent - how much space is there in your housing from the right edge of the original RED's power ON/OFF button until the inside front of the housing?
If there is enough space to fit the battery - I can maybe make some simple solution for you (something completely different from my product)...
If you have the E-7S or the CUE-D75 (or can borrow / rent it from somewhere) - just gaffer-tape it to the side of the RED with the battery's left edge aligned with the power button's right edge - then see if that fits in your housing.
You can also just make a cardboard cut-out based on the dimensions in my drawing and gaffer-tape that to the RED to try.
If that fits - I might be able to help...

Peter,

I did the test and it doesn't fit so I have to modify my housing.
I was thinking of using the LIPo solution mentioned in another thread but I don't feel it... When shooting surfing for example, we take a lot of wave on the hand and having a LIPo battery shaking in the housing is probably not a safe bat.
Anyway thanks for your help and advices as always.

Hallo Holger! We are currently testing a new firmware that will address the drift caused by excessive g-forces. Things are looking really promising. But please keep in mind that unlike DJI's aerial Zenmuse gimbals - the Ronin is first of its kind in its own "handheld gimbals" category. This is why I have used the word "excessive", as it was not originally built for moving platforms...

About the second issue - excessive vibrations - I would like to see the setup you were using. Give us as much info about that shoot and the problems - so we can help you trouble-shoot it...

I use LiPo's all the time with our drones for aerial cinematography and while there certainly are ways to handle them properly and safely - nobody can give you 100% guarantee you will be safe. So I agree I would stay away from using LiPo's to directly power the RED - especially in an enclosed space of an underwater housing...

I can make a simple IDX plate with the power cable (like the one being sold by FREEFLY) that you can mount to any position inside the housing, just let me know...

Cheers

I agree with you on the LIPo thing.
Thanks for your help, I will figure out out to modify the housing then I will have a better idea of where to attach the plate.

This is probably from the EasyRig, imo. We did a camera prep with the EasyRig before a 5 day shoot and planned on renting it for the duration until we did tests with and without it. It shakes WAY more when on the EasyRig in our tests so we just cancelled the rental.

Hi Peter I am sure you are tired of answering questions about DJI but their lack of comunication about planned accessories is non existent. Are they still planing to launch the JoyStick and also the XL arms (any idea when 3, 6 or 12 months away). Sorry for harping on about this but for my setup it is imperative.
Thanks

Yes (of course) on the joystick. Willis actually did confirm that the delay on the joystick is due to complete overhaul after field testing the prototypes. The extra wait will be rewarded by much better unit once it is out. I do expect the new ones to start shipping at some point in late November, or December the latest...

Spare batteries shortage is being addressed. They have a extra strict quality control and requirements when it comes to LiPo batteries (due to the inherited risk associated with that chemistry) and they (both DJI and the company making the LiPo's) were not prepared for the sheer numbers of the orders. DJI is currently vetoing additional manufacturers to boost the production capacity, but this is a lengthy process and with LiPo's there is no cutting corners...

The long arms are also very much on the list. The original design posted on the forum has been replaced (again after extensive beta testing) with a new design that addresses many features and issues related to the extensions. Some of these new components are already on their way to me (and other beta testers). Once all tested and proven - I hope they will start shipping before end of the year...

Lucas,
Unfortunately, due to the price drop from $4,499 to $2,999, we aren't able to offer the free thumb control system anymore. Rest assured though, we will be keeping our products affordable without the compromise of quality engineering. More info on this shortly.

Hmmm, not made for moving platforms, good to know

The point is that this should not be a surprise to anyone. Ronin was from the get go in its own category marked as "handheld gimbals", unlike the Zenmuse aerial gimbals.
But keep in mind that people use stuff all the time for purposes other then the original one. Just do not expect or demand support for such a uses.
DJI has stepped up to the multitude of request for using the Ronin on moving platforms and this is exactly the new firmware we are testing now.
My concern simply is that you offer people a helping hand and they rip off your arm at the shoulder...

Does anyone have advice for using the Lightbridge with the Ronin remote simultaneously? They were marketed to go hand and hand together when i purchased it but was upset to find out that they are the same frequencies. It's very difficult to use them together without getting pixelated and interrupted feeds.

I'm also curious as to how to turn the fan volume down on the Lightbridge, it's really loud.

No worries Willis, completely understandable. Just thought I would check. I'll still be snapping up a thumb control as soon as they become available. :)

Frank, the LightBridge is meant to replace the link between your TX (transmitter/controller) and the RX (Ronin in this case). This requires the LightBridge to be connected to the TX via the "trainer" port. The included Ronin's remote does not have this (nor does the remote for the phantom). You will need to get a compatible remote controller. This is clearly outlined in the LightBridge documentation along the list of compatible controllers. Once you have it setup properly - your TX will not transmit any radio signal - it will pass its commands to the LightBridge, that will then radio transmit the commands to the Ronin's RX. You will get a clean digital picture of superb quality. You can find some of the compatible controllers for as low as $100 - but I would recommend you get the Futaba 14SG. This controller will serve you well for many years to come and it is an all-round choice for the vast majority of RC users...
