  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

Currently checking the interest in this to see the initial production quantities - based on which we can figure out the final pricing.
First batch will ship out to customers within a month after we lock the price in...

I'm interested pending price...

Hi Peter Do the IDX E-7S batteries provide enough power to power the Dragon when shooting at high speed. Red says that the Epic draws an average of 60W when shooting 5K at 24FPS on the specs of this battery it says Maximum Discharge Current 51W. This power solution looks ideal but I am concerned about the Dragon power draw being too much.

We are doing extensive testing as we speak. I'll let you know...

I'm more than interested but I'm worried about the size.
Peter, is your system + battery higher than the camera + tactical top plate?

Here you go Vincent...:

LWC_PROTO_vs_RED.png

As you can see my actual products is precisely machined to fit in the side-ribs of the RED brain and follows the side contours.
Even including the E7S battery it is still 5 mm shorter then RED DSMC brain with the TOP PLATE.
When looking from the front (lens side of the camera) - it only sticks out 52.5 mm to the left side - that is 11.5 mm less then the SIDE HANDLE...!

You can open the above PNG image in a separate window to see high-resolution...

I hope this helps!

Oh Man! Million thanks for that Peter.
Count me in, I definitely want one.

Hey, guys. I was wondering if you guys can help me figure out how to create a pully or harness system that would allow me to attach the rig (with my Dragon set up on it) to a jib and be able to pull it off and keep moving in one shot? I'm buying that universal mount from Cinemilled that allows me to attach the rig to the head of my jin, but just wondering if theres any way for me to detach it quickly and keep moving.

Does anyone know of a good way to make some sort of rope system for it in general that can be detached quickly? I was watching the making of that one ronin film (the long take where it goes down the stairs during the fight and through the window and everything) and they didn't really explain how they made those systems where it attaches to different object and detaches so quickly. I'm not the craftiest of guys at these things, unfortunately.

Thanks a lot, love the ronin so far.

Yes, looks good. Let us know on cost! :) I saw the post about the FREEFLY battery plate, has anyone used this on their Ronin? Other than that and the sidehandle, any other ways to power an epic? Thanks alot!

Hi Nathan, I have a FREEFLY battery plate, this is the one I use with my Ronin. It works fine. With side battery plate you have just the necessary room to balance it.

Nathan - the cost and other related info will be released within the next 24 hrs... ;o)

Vincent - I have even more good news for you - I have done some further testing with the new generation compact battery from IDX - the ENDURA CUE-D75.
This battery is just slightly larger then the previous generation E-7S, but it does offer slightly larger capacity (73Wh/14.8V/4.9Ah vs 68Wh/14.8V/4.6Ah).
It also handles the Dragon better then the E-7S and offers an additional D-tap directly on the battery itself (great for charging your USB devices such as your phone, etc... even when not on the camera).
The best part - it still has a smaller footprint then the RED + SIDE HANDLE + TOP PLATE...:

It is 100g heavier at 615g (vs 515g of the E-7S) but this is due to advanced protection electronics that prevent over-charge, over-discharge and over-current.
This new battery has also been approved by both ICAO and IATA for air transport.
There is no restriction on how many you can bring with you in carry-on and you can check-in one when attached to a camera / equipment.
Best bit - you can ship these as well without any issues as they are exempt from the hazardous materials - as long as you don't put more then two in the same box - so you can also ship these like a normal package...
I really like the new, more ergonomic design and the fact that it runs much cooler on the Epic then the E-7S...

In the end - it is good to have choices. Now there are two IDX V-lock batteries to chose from for gimbal / UWH use!

Hi Tito, thanks! which battery do you use? Will Red Bricks fit?

RED bricks are too big to be used on almost any gimbal. Ronin could eventually handle it with the longer arms, but you really need to invest into more lightweight solution for gimbal work.
The tough part is finding the balance. REVOLT is too small and forces you to change batteries frequently (never mind the actual hassle of changing the batteries in the SH).
REDVOLT-XL has IMHO the perfect capacity (being able to run the camera for +/- 1 hr), but the form factor is not good for gimbal work, as the real-estate at the rear is greatly limited.
This is also why other rear-mounted battery solutions (including V-locks) are not suitable for gimbal work.
This is why I have been working for so long on developing my product - we are now hours from the actual announcement... ;o)

Thanks so much for all these infos Peter.
I'll be a bit selfish here but I' more thinking about my water housing than the Ronin right now.
Is it possible to fix your system more on the front of the camera or is it locked in one definitive position?
Just wondering if when playing with bolts and position we have a bit of lattitude in where to attach it.
Asking that because one of the control of my housing won't fit with that plate for just half a centimeter.

Hi Vincent. The mounting plate is precision CNC machined to fit the contours of the RED brain, including the ribs on the side of the Epic (while still being compatible with Scarlet).
This includes the mechanical extension of the RED's POWER ON/OFF button that is being covered by the product.
As such, there really is no way the plate could be mounted in any other position...

Having said that - if you can give me precise drawing of where the conflict is in your housing and what are the limits - I can look into possibility of custom modifying one system to fit your application...

Thanks again Peter for taking the time to reply to me.
My housing is custom made and having it modified is a bit of a pain as everything works fine now but some changes could mess up the system because all controls are linked.
This week-end, I will cut some wood based on your doc with the measurement and see if by moving it a bit on the front it has a chance to work and if it's the case, I'll send you a drawing.
Have a great week-end!

Can anyone help me with any ideas on this? My shoot is coming up next weekend and have to start prepping fast...
