  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin-MX

Like shooting at eye level without having to raise your arms over your head like a monkey :-)

...and FYI: I'm pretty sure most of that Ronin footage has more stabilization added in post :wink5:

Seems like a stretch to me that theres any way of being "pretty sure that most ronin users stabilize in post", thats just ridiculous. and since im 6'5 I havent ever had an issue with eye level shooting, but I guess for shorter people thats what upright mode is for. Also Ronin also has the power cable to power Red power onboard, its lighter, and a fraction of the price... It also doesn't have that wacky cable running to the joystick, which was clearly an after thought, matter of fact the ronin joystick is wireless, perfect for when on my Jib and soon to come wireless video. The only thing the helix has going is that you can stand a Helix up on its own. I just lean mine against a wall when I dont have the stand near by, which is usually never the case cause im not running away from set to get my shot.

Not trying to knock your ways man, I just fell strongly that overall the Ronin is a much better buy.

I think I'll wait till the DJI Ronin-MXL comes out then ;-)

What support vests are people using these days for our gimbals? So much to choose from. I'm quite disappointed with my EasyRig, Flowcine Serene arm setup so thinking of getting rid of it and getting something else.
Options? Ready Rig GS or Exoskeleton?

Have you seen the Steadicam SteadiMate ? by far it looks live the best solution to adding arm / vest to the Ronin

Fair enough.

But Next time you come across a Helix, try it out. With the Helix we can move cameras on and off on the fly without having to think about changing the configurations - i.e. Relocating field monitor etc... It's effortless.

In regards to weight, the full size Helix Magnesium weighs 4.75lbs with battery and easily hold cameras up to 12lbs. Not sure how the Ronin beats that?

The Ronin MX is def'n interesting. They made it a bit lighter, but doing so really limited it in terms of weight that it can support. DJI said it supports over 10 lbs (per the private launch event I was at), but they have to rate it less than that simply because they know people will put more weight than listed on it. I wish they would have incorporated some of the design work that Cinemilled has done with extension arms, QR plates, etc.

I don't know if I'm a fan of the new battery design/implementation. I know you don't need to use the rear battery, but then you have to figure out a way to mount a brick or whatever else you're going to use if you're not going the DJI route. DJI claims it's for better stability, but we shall see. Adds weight, and may limit tilting on longer/larger camera setups.

When I was playing around with it, it was lighter, but you're still going to need some sort of support system, as it just gets heavy quickly. Take after take after take isn't going to happen.

I didn't get clarification on this, so DJI may have already implanted Lightbridge 2 into the sled of the new Ronin MX, but it seems like it wouldn't only work on their new drone. Would have been nice to have an HDMI port built right into the sled to stream light bridge out to ipads/iphones, etc.

I'll hopefully have one soon to test and will provide detailed feedback.

thank Chis very interested in hearing a real world test with the mx. Sounds like they worked some bugs out but still early in the tech

Just processing the footage from the early tests. The R-MX can definitely handle Scarlet-X with the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 zoom, filter, follow-focus and other small bits and pieces effortlessly...

:sifone: Peter

That's almost exactly the setup I want to run Peter. What exactly did you use to get a filter on the Sigma? I presume you meant a 4x5.65? I'd like to figure out how to get a vari ND screw plus one 4x5.65 look filter, if possible.

Just got the Tilta Armor man II... this shit makes me able to do takes that are hours long no problem more steady than most steady cam operators... and I´m just a post guy fiddling with these things, imagine if somebody actually put some effort in and put a few years experience on their craft then Im sure gimbals will out preform steady cams no doubt.

This was just me running the camera when going from the spot where we where filming to the car. Without even really trying, but Armor man takes the steps away and ease on the arms, I can easily do the same with only one hand.

Can we see that in non-slo mo?

Undersood regarding the Jr but we find that the "regular" model doesn't suffer from those issues. The Helix does indeed cost more $$ but there are so many benefits over the Ronin that make it worth it. Like shooting at eye level without having to raise your arms over your head like a monkey :-)

For example, watch our trailer for The Coming Convergence (.com). It has a lot of Helix shots in it... Zero bounce... And we didn't add any post production stabilization.

This is ronin on armor man no post stabilizing: https://vimeo.com/163396717

and this is ronin without armor man still no stablizing in post: https://vimeo.com/158698733

I can not say that I had enough time with the helix to make a judgement of it but saying that the ronin bounce is just wrong it has nothing to do with the ronin it´s depending on distance to object, lens and how still you hold the rig... no difference between ronin an other rigs in that regard. The bounce is simply Y movent something no gimbal take care of. You need Y stabilizer to handle that, like a Exo skelleton or such.

The eye level thing is sorted by simply flip the ronin 180 deg forward and then turn it on. On the helix over slung or under slung does not make a difference. Lens is still center / same distance from handles. One can argue that options to drag camera high and low is possibly better than just having handles in hight of lens.

Someone asked me if the front-mounted battery is not a problem on the R-MX when flying it on the M600.
It's not a problem at all. You will see the rotor blade long before you see the battery. The battery up front really helps with balancing and stabilizing the pan axis...

Peter, can you comment about the handles. The old Ronin handles slip. I actually have to tighten them with a wrench to keep them from slipping especially when going to inverted mode. Any improvement in that department? Or the same ole? Also, the buckle for sliding the baseplate fore and aft has always been a bit of a pain. Is that too the same or not?

Thanks Peter for info about front battery.New ronin-mx don't have build in gps but I heard that Dji may release external gps module for ronin-mx.
Personally I am looking for advice what will be better ronin-mx or one of gremsy gimbals.

I can comment on my Ronin-M handles. They are great, no slipping or loosening. I imagine the MX is of the same/similar new build type.

Peter or anyone who has tried the MX, have any of you tried to power an Alexa mini at 200 fps? IDX E7's don't cut it as it only puts out 6amps. The mini needs 10 amps. Would like to know what the amperage is from the MX's camera power.

Problem I have is when flipping to inverted. The handles slip on the flip, especially with Mini or dragon

About the handles: I really like the MX handles (same as M), as they can be (tool-lessly) separated from the center handle. This has two main advantages - that you can operate a very compact setup without the side bars and handles in tight spaces (like inside car, heli, etc) and you can also pack it easily. So what I do is to tighten the side handles with the Allen key so they won't slip and when packing - I just separate the whole sides (carbon rod & handle) from the center handle. This packs compact and flat - very nice! I am now trying to convince DJI to release the same handle type for the big Ronin as a spare part...

Ned - I'll look into the power output, but considering these are LiPo's - I think there will be no problem...

Mitchell mount.

Mitchell mount.

So for jib, car use, what's the best process for attaching a Ronin-MX? Is there a straight forward way to get it connected to a mitchell mount?

Since I was part of the DJI shoot for the MX i can tell you .....

We used my CineMilled Mitchell mount to mount the MX on the Lenny arm/gator setup.

https://cinemilled.com/

All of our Ronin products work for the MX. So the universal mount, the tilt extensions and the PRO Dovetail.....all still work on the MX.

In fact the PRO Dove tail is a must have IMHO.

Here it is on set.....The official pictures are in the DJI print brochures and the official DJI website

Mounted with the RED Raven...

** Note: Even though we make a dedicated Ronin mitchell mount you can use any of our Ronin mounts to mount on a mitchell you just need a 3/8" bolt and washer, or maybe a tripod tie down can work also**

There I am making my cameo in the brochure ... and yes my mom got a copy
