DJI RONIN Group Buy

Tell you what kids . . . I would trade whatever GB discount for a ticket to a full day AMP* Ronin Warrior Training Bootcamp where small groups of us can get up to speed by working on set / in field with Patrick, Austin and the other smart guys on the AMP Team.

Interested in that?

Maybe AMP can also be the first to develop a formal Ronin Certification Program (RCP) for this product. Make that a couple day / couple thou deal that gives career minded Professionals a way to differentiate themselves from the Joes.

Hey Rory,
I would appreciate you not spamming this thread with FUD. Honestly dude . . . you're starting to have a real used car salesman vibe

Nice one Zeb, no need to insult me. I'm just trying to help fellow filmmakers who are going into gimbals for the first time. Its important to know all the facts when your business and career depend on it.

I'll ask you this Zeb, what DJI products have you used or own and how you have found support for them?
I've been building and selling multicopters that are designed for the EPIC for the past 2 years and have a lot of experience dealing with DJI.

Also what gimbal experience do you have Zeb? You've insulted me so its far to ask, how much time have you actually spent setting up, balancing and tuning a gimbal?

When I mentioned support and the importance of it, I don't just mean the respond to issues that need fixing, I mean professional support for a professional tool that is evolving. Support where you as an end-user can talk directly with the company manufacturing the tool and request features that you require for your line of work, features that you only figure out you need once you're out shooting on a film set and have the pressures of production to deal with.

This is why MoVi are doing so well. They listen to the filmmakers using their products, they evolve the product for the industry using it. DJI want to mass produce a brushless gimbal like they do the GoPro Phantom. Which is a nice toy and serves the wedding video / prosumer end of the market really well. If it fails its no big deal to the production, as the wedding guy or occasional user doesn't have much invested on for the shoot.

Gimbals are the hottest thing at the moment and everyone wants to jump on it.

The unexperienced gimbal user looks at the line up on offer and it seems to be a payload war, 16lbs sounds better that 10lbs but what they don't understand is its a complete package not just a weight payload war. The H14 is rated to take 14lbs but actually the motors can handle 18lbs. I had my Epic setup on at NAB which weighed in at 13lbs and everyone that tried the gimbal said the same thing… its pretty blood heavy and why / how would you physically hold any more weight.

The package of a gimbal is its motors, its frame, its controller… how well does everything work together and how responsive is it. How quickly can you physically balance the rig before you even turn it on. How can you adjust settings and what features does the gimbal have that cater to the professional filmmaker who's career and business relies on them getting the shot.

How supportive and reactive is the gimbal manufacturer? do they talk and work with filmmakers? are they end-uses themselves?

A note on the DJI auto-tune.

You will always have to balance the camera on the gimbal, regardless of who makes the gimbal. You have to set it up to balance to the centre of gravity.
The auto tune DJI is totting is for the motor setup, which sets the gains for each motor dependent on the camera rig you have put on the gimbal.
Auto tune is a neat trick and hats off to DJI, however Gremsy are working on that too and I'm sure MoVi will have it soon as well.

Yes...seems like when you buy gimbal you really are investing in the whole system especially software to run it.
So Movi has their custom program...DJI has their own program now...but some Alexmos users are just
sent out by some gimbal makers to figure it out on their own with what's out there shared on the internet.

PID is too much for us...so that's why this auto tune button seems like a gift.

Understanding AlexMos PID Settings....here it is

Yeah Gremsy make their own custom controller like MoVi do, we had 3 of the other gimbal makers come up to us at NAB and inquire about using the gStabiH14 controller for their own gimbals.

Auto tune is coming, as I totally agree that PID is a pain and it should be a lot easier to do.

"The facts" . . . I agree. Let's start with disclosing your relationship with Gremsy. It appears that, at some point, you became a commissioned salesman for them. I mean for just a "fellow filmmaker" you spend an inordinate amount of time squatting on gimbal related threads such as this one pitching the H14 and talking smack about others.

I am respectfully asking you to not use this Group Buy thread as yet another platform to preach about the competitive product you are selling and spreading FUD. You are clearly not a buyer nor an objective party so have little to add to the discussion. I think that after your several hundred recent posts about the virtues of the H14 everyone here knows your views as Gremsy's paid(?) Rep.

If you would like to start a thread entitled "Why You Should Buy an H14 From Me" then have at it. This is not that thread.

No . . . those who participate in this GB are buying from and will be supported by Patrick Smith of Aerial Media Pros.

I guess that puts me out of the GB.
Being based in Japan it will make no sense buying something made next door via the USA.
Ah well...

Let's play nice here shall we.

The fact is - the BEST rig at the show hands down IMO was not either of these rigs but the G-RIG VALOS. They got their shit down. BUT ... at $12K for better power distro and slightly better software and construction -I'd rather put the extra $6K into something else.

H14 is a GREAT rig. I would take it over the MOVI for Epic work. But ... DJI has me convinced that they will own the "sub-$10K" gimbal space. Yes, everyone is going to just keep copying and copying each other and I'm sure we will get auto-tune in SimpleBGC for free soon enough.

So ... let's relax on the great Gimbal wars. Next year they will all be $3-$4K.

And yeah - this thread is about the DJI group buy.

I've never used Gimbals yet.. For those who have experiences, how is it? Do you think it will replace SteadyCam? Is there any downside you guys notice?

Apples and Oranges.

Gimbals control (and stabilize) the ROTATION along the XYZ axis.
Steadicams control (and stabilize) both the ROTATION (to a degree) and (unlike gimbals) primarily the TRANSLATION along the XYZ axis.

The irony is that the best thing is to combine these two for the ultimate camera motion stabilized in all 6 axis (XYZ translation and XYZ rotation)...

Fair enough but let me explain my view of Group Buy Etiquette . . .

Starting and managing a Group Buy is similar to opening up a Shop without the upside. There is inherent risk to reputation if you choose the wrong team to work with and any number of things out of your control to miss buyer's expectations. I do it to give something back to RU since I am not Phil Holland or David Mullen so cannot provide their style of value back for the benefit I gain. All that said let me suggest to the Mods an informal set of Rules of Conduct. But first a little story:

Imagine there is a deli in Little Italy, NYC called Tony's Meat Shop. One day Tony is talking to a customer about a large order when the owner of his competitor's store, Joe's Meat Shop, walks in and tells Tony's customer that the quality of his products / service are crap and that the customer should leave and go to Joe's instead. How do you think that would turn out? A bloody nose and a call to 911 best I can figure.

There needs to be an understanding that Representatives (paid or not) of competing products are to not comment on GB threads as a professional courtesy. If they want to start a thread such as "Top Ten Reasons Why Tony is a Bad Man" then fine. This is a public forum of sorts so anyone is entitled to their opinion.

The point is that it is unprofessional and disrespectful to voice that opinion in someone else's GB Shop. I, and others, that take the risk of setting up GB's should not have to defend the company we have partnered with against an aggressive competitor's salesguy who is attempting to poach customers. Which is exactly what happened here and elsewhere.

A bit of Group Buy Etiquette would lift the level of dialog and professionalism in my view
