  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Discount? (If Red Dragon owner - Previous to NAB)

I'm hoping we get at least some pricing info before NAB hits. I doubt I'm alone in thinking that I'd like to take advantage of the early deposit/discount, but I need to be able to plan and it'd be nice not to have to figure all of that out during NAB or be left behind.

Would definitely love this. Considering I am in the market for a new camera. Red please let us know how much money you will be taking from us prior NAB. Thanks.

I am sure many are in this boat. I know I am. With that said, RED has been pretty good to this point sharing info on this system. We know a decent amount already. Jarred has always been good in letting people know about stuff like this before it gets to close. I'd guess we see something in the next week or two. Could be wrong, just a guess.

Dragon owners get an extra credit the week of NAB if they put in the deposit order for a Weapon upgrade or new Weapon.

It is a healthy credit, enough to buy a new 512GB mini-mag or something else you have your eye on to augment your new camera. But that credit is just available the week of NAB, and just for those that have a Dragon or have already began the process of upgrading their MX to Dragon.

Hey Jarred, is NAB deposits and discounts focused on Non-Vista Weapons? In other words, do you have to go 6K weapon first before Vista? Sorry for calling it Vista - not sure what else to call it for now. Thanks!

Can 6k Dragon footage be intercut with V,V footage?

I have fully paid the Upgrade from Epic-X to Dragon. But I have some very important shots in the next weeks. Spring is coming here in Tyrol, but we have to shoot some more Skiing in the Alps...
I hope with the paid Upgrade the process has begun...

Just thinking through some of this pricing stuff, if you want to go top of the line from current Epic-X Dragon--

If your typical upgrade in the past has been ~9500, call it 10K.
Add on top of that Carbon which is currently ~20K+ premium over Epic-X Dragon.
and say Vista sized is considered another sensor upgrade, so another 10K,

You could be looking at a $30-40K upgrade coming from an Epic-X Dragon to stay at the top of the RED market. Seeing all these credits/discounts (one for already being a Dragon owner, one for putting down a deposit during NAB, maybe some sort of credit program per mag you've bought) makes me think this will be an expensive upgrade cycle. And that is without even bringing in the fact that the new form factor will necessitate a host of new accessories to replace old ones that no longer fit properly.

I hope I'm wrong / missing some stuff here. I just want to prepare for the "worst-case" and it's really hard to speculate on right now.

On another note, I've got to think that if we're being asked for deposits during NAB, new cameras must be shipping pretty quickly (~30 days?). All the previous times I have bought or upgraded, no money changed hands before they actually sent the goods. In this case, it's functionally an interest-free loan for as long as you're waiting on your new camera.

Whew. Lots to think about.

I'm going back to my original suspicion about the upgrade costs to Weapon;
for existing dragon owners it may a steal of a deal (especial w/ the NAB credit).

Yeah I'm hoping that we can go to Vista but just the sensor and not a big upgrade. I am fine with S35 for highspeed and Fullframe for 24p. Hopefully there is a direct upgrade path.

We could start calling it RED Mojave

And M is kind of an upside down W too. :D

This is yet an other incredibly generous "RED" behavior... :)

It means that for those wanting to go the Weapon upgrade route at NAB... And are still on MX, for them going to Dragon will be like only paying 7kish...!!

For those of us already on Dragon... Well, getting a 2.5kish worth of credit can be put to buy some new Weapon accessories... :)

2 questions: How much will be the required deposit for the Weapon upgrade and do we have to attend NAB or can we do it online or via phone or something?

Is there somewhere that says it is an actual deposit? With all the other upgrades, like MX to Dragon, you just said "yes" I want the upgrade, they put you in the line...then once your number got called a month (or 6 months or however long) later THEN you paid for the upgrade. I hope that how it will continue.

I don't remember putting down an actual deposit. That was only done for the original RED One, if I remember correctly.

ahhh, dang :)

...hope it is not put money down now and wait a year, it was nice to pay when things were actually happening the last couple times.

There will be ALOT of cameras to upgrade before the "Epic-X Dragon to Weapon" upgrades happen. But who knows, maybe upgrades will be alot speedier this time, that would be rad. RED keeps surprising in that department!

Jarred's words on this particular topic. Weapon upgrades commence Summer/Fall 2015. Those first ones likely are going to be Carbon Weapon based on the link Bob referenced. The Weapon upgrade program will run for a while. Likely a year or two if deposits are being taken at NAB 2015.

Moving forward Weapon is going to be the likely path for future upgrades.

I took the plunge and am upgrading my Scarlet to a Dragon Scarlet. I do realize this will be bigger than those coming from Epic Dragon. Would be nice to know how much deposit will be for going from Scarlet Dragon to Weapon so I can make sure I have enough in the bank to cover it.

Thanks for the credit, very generous and want to take advantage of it.

Thanks for the reply Phil

Just trying to understand your response...if we put the deposit down before NAB, it could possibly take up to 2 years to get Weapon Upgrade (for epic-x dragon to weapon)? Is that what you are thinking?

or are you just saying you can move yourself up in line if you throw down on Carbon?

My question was more a general timing thing...we put deposit down now, are we waiting a year to get a camera...

I honestly am just excited with the direction RED is moving and to hear all the upcoming details of the Weapon and the upgrade.

No, I'm guesstimating on how long the Weapon Upgrade Program will last. Likely 1 to 2 years. Dragon upgrades were offered in 2013 in a similar fashion, with bodies making into hands by around Q4 2013. Carbon Dragon was a separate line and people could even purchase those new and RED offered an upgrade path even to Carbon Dragon. Much like Dragon, Carbon Weapon is the "flagship" and those will be pushed out first along with the earliest Weapon upgrades. The bigger difference this time around is Carbon Weapon "will do more". So there are gains other than just the weight benefits.

Like everything though, it's a game of supply and demand. If people discover that Weapon is everything they want it to be, everybody will deposit dough and get in line. Then it's RED's job to chew through the queue.

I suspect based off of the experience of the Dragon upgrades RED has learned a lot and Weapon upgrades might be a quicker ordeal, but time will tell. We're not even there yet.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Jarred also say the Weapon upgrade will include a mini mag side module as well? That's another "freebie".

It is my understanding that the current mini-mag module will NOT work on the Weapon. That means that no current media module will carry forward. Therefore, Jarred has indicated there will be an "upgrade" program for the media module. Not sure that's a "freebie" insofar as you are paying for the Weapon upgrade, but you will be taken care of.

I paid a 50% deposit when I upgraded from Red 1 to Epic and the wait was lengthy.
The deposit payment is consistent with the camera upgrades so far (as opposed to sensor upgrades which did not require deposit).

I hope that the upgrade price will also be consistent - in the $10k range.
