  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Discount? (If Red Dragon owner - Previous to NAB)

Anyone know has it been stated how much of a deposit will be required?

As I understand it, we will get a discount for placing our deposit during NAB. Will it require a several thousand dollar deposit to be placed in two weeks? Or will it be closer to $500 - $1000?

Might be on my own here.

But is there any chance we can get the cost of the deposit and upgrade here in the next few days? It would be great to be able to plan ahead a bit rather than hearing first thing next week.

Totally understand if that's outside protocol. Figured it was worth a shot to ask.

I'm kind of expecting (hoping) anything from $1,000 to $2,500.

Honestly, I would be a little annoyed if it's too much more than $1000 (like the original redone deposit)

We had to tie up $5000 for over a year on the red one to epic upgrade. (I'm SN206 so an early adopter not a high serial either)

$1000 (maybe non refundable because I understand it is important to know how many are committed) seems like plenty to show that you're serious. Tying up $5K for over a year seemed a little more like we were financiers than customers.

(sorry Jarred, you know I like and respect you and Red, but as an accessory manufacturer I have talked to hundreds of red owners and this was a VERY common complaint - but no one wanted to complain publicly for fear of initiating the "bad attitude" clause.)

As long as weapon provides the same type of value that we've seen in the past we will put the deposit down no matter what it is but I'm just giving you some feedback from a red friend and I wouldn't say it if I didn't think it was an important point.

Revealing the actual cost of the deposit sooner than Sunday night could be a gift to RED's competitors - it gives them time to hone a pitch that cites that single number as indicative of the RED way. Brent may also have Jarred under a pretty good embargo until NAB for practical and logistical reasons - that's just good management, can't fault them for that.

That said, as I, and many other RedUsers, prepare to head for Vegas we are inevitably going to consider things like potential deposits on gear in our planning.

Bottom line, whatever you can tell us without risk to the good ship RED would be appreciated.

Cheers - #19

maybe so, but sure doesn't make my planning any easier lol! whatever the deal is I'm just hoping for a longer time table than a week... cuz I don't even have 5 figures saved this second and i have no idea how much i actually need to have on hand, so I'm assuming i won't have enough atm so i don't really get bummed if i come up short..

Makes sense.

Can't say I be annoyed. But anymore than $1000 and I don't think I'd do the deposit personally either regardless of what it offers and probably just miss out on the estimated ($2500 credit) and jump in down the line. IIRC It took til last September just to get the approval to send in my Epic for the Dragon upgrade and couldn't get it done til the mid December due to my shooting schedule. I also submitted the upgrade option within a day or two of the announcement which was in April '13. I get the good faith concept, but having to wait a year and half or two for whatever the upgrade is again with money tied up is a pretty big leap of faith if you're putting down more than $1000 and pretty close to the back of the line due to the Hierarchy.

With that all said I totally get the idea of waiting to announce it and not releasing a price. Just seems like something that would give more people the opportunity to jump on board. It does make me wonder though since they're jumping over to a new body and taking deposits, if this might be a bit of a longer process than even the MX release even with the given timeline?

Delivery date is the one very important piece of the puzzle that has not really been talked about. Those of us that have been around since redone days know that from announcement to delivery, Red can take years. I'm going to wait until cameras are being sold on the website until I upgrade. I may be missing out on the dragon sensor price reduction and the as yet unknown benefits of upgrading before NAB but I'm willing to accept that speculation based on past performance.
If Red had ,as Arri did, announced the w as shipping in May or June or even August it would be a no brainer but there have been zero announcements on ship dates and with the pace of camera tech these days it doesn't seem like a good investment to me.
I really hope that the w fixes everything that is wrong with the epic and that red has listened to dp's and camera assistants and operators on what they want from a camera and that the idea of a real modular camera comes to fruition.

I'm pretty confident in RED. I'm sure that the upgrade will be well worth it. I plan to place a deposit as soon as possible, provided I can afford it. Obviously it's all dependent on the details. But at this point, I have s lot of trust in RED. My guess is that the upgrade will leave me once again feeling grateful to RED for the opportunity.

Who knows.

I guess we'll all know more in a week.

If we have paid for the EPIC MX to Dragon upgrade before NAB but still haven't shipped off the camera due to waiting on RMA... does that count as beginning the upgrade process and qualifies us for the NAB discounted price on RED Weapon upgrade?

Generally once you've paid for an upgrade, you are good, even if the camera hasn't been physically upgraded…but check with your Bomb Squad rep just to be certain.

If you finalize payment for the Dragon prior to NAB you will receive a discount on your Weapon Upgrade. As to pricing, I dont have that info just yet! As soon as I have it Ill let you know.

You do have to eventually send it in though. Cannot simply pay for the upgrade and then jump 2 steps from MX->Weapon.

Not sure why that would be an absolute. It might depend on the timing for everything, including the individual's place in line. Why would RED insist on the intermediate step it you didn't want or need it?

I am not saying it's likely to happen, just that I don't see a reason why it couldn't.

Jarred stated as such in one of the myriad threads of speculation. Sounded like a logistical issue. IE the guts of the Epic/Scarlet Dragon are transplanted into the Weapon.

I think they are pretty serious about phasing out the upgrade lines from MX. They have mentioned that the transition to Weapon relies on key components from the Dragon body, hence why they are insisting on Dragon upgrade first.

guys, I'm really nervous about coming up short on this incentive time frame, cash wise...i understand its tough cuz u don't want competitors to know the upgrade price pre NAB, but if the window for the extra incentive is really very short it makes cash flow problems likely for some people who want to buy but have no idea how much to budget atm. i only have like idk 5k or so i could throw down on a deposit now but i have no idea if that is enough or should i be trying to extend my credit limit, etc? or how much to bust peoples chops for invoices right now, etc...? i could get more cash together, but i have no idea if i need to lol? oh the unknown is messing with me so bad...ive talked myself into paying for my amira UHD upgrade if I'm short on the red upgrade deposit, thats like the only way i won't feel bad at NAB if 5 grand isn't enough for a deposit and i miss the window lol!..

ps the other thing i worry about is if the deposit is non refundable...cuz if i came up short when weapon ships and needed some time i really hope i don't lose the deposit, and i know reds been super cool in the past and not done stuff like that so I'm hoping for the best on that part as well...its tough to really keep the cash flow right as a freelancer when your product makers won't keep you in the loop just like your clients lol!

Hmmmm so buy the Dragon upgrade for $9500 to get $2500 off the Weapon........ can you just put the $9500 toward a new Weapon?

You can't get the Weapon upgrade unless you have a Dragon. You can, of course, buy a new Weapon, but I am pretty sure it will cost more than the upgrade.

And where did the "$2500 off the Weapon" figure come from?? Nothing has been stated yet.

I am pretty sure you can count on the math to work out.
