  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dell U2410 IPS 24"

I don't have a colorimeter acctually but will be sure to pick one up!
The spyder though seem to need a 12 bit videocard but since I'm getting my signal from the MXO2 I can only get 10 bit. Or have I got this wrong?
Maybe I was a bit naive when matrox said you could calibrate using thier software without the use of any hardware.
We only deliver SD for TV and occasionally HD for the web.
The monitor as far as I know has no rec.709 setting but at the time being we don't need it.

if you are using Matrox MXO2, then you DON'T need to buy color calibration software. Once Matrox is installed, connected and you have the latest firmware, you then go into system preferences, choose matrox MXO2 at bottom, then to to video out and at bottom choose calibrate---you need to have your monitor connected via HDMI (you can ONLY calibrate on the matrox if you are connected to your monitor by HDMI). then you can import into FCP either the matrox color bars or use final cut pro's color bars. Follow the instrcutions in the Matrox Manual (which is online)---very simple to do and then your monitor is calibrated.

Now if you are using RED footage, you have several choices---i first transcode all red footage to 422 or 444, then you can choose one of the easy setups in FCP and import those files into your FCP project...wallah! now you have a color corrected monitor VIA HDMI and you are working with prores files that you can correct with FCP's color.

Color bars alone will correctly calibrate the monitor for broadcast encoding standards, but will not calibrate to a neutral white balance and greyscale suitable for critical grading of raw files. It really depends on how accurate and critical you need to be for your intended delivery format. Correcting for neutral gray to a defined color temp at several gray scale points from 100% white down to near black level using both primary and secondary color controls with the sophisticated controls available on a good monitor is not something that can be done by eye.

Yes I know, the matrox settings is really straightforward and the workflow is not a problem but as David mentions there are no way to know if you have the right colors.
I think it's a bit green so I have actually pulled the green back a bit in the monitorsettings, but still I have no Idea what I'm doing really haha.
But maybe a colorimeter will take care of this problem?
Anyone has the answer to the question about needing 12 bit graphicscard when using the spyder? (the matrox only output 10 bit) Have you calibrated your dell with a colorimeter fed from the MXO2-HDMI John?

If you cannot do it in 10bit then 12 bit won't help. in fact you should be able to color correct jsut fine in 8bit via DVI. I understand David's point, but also there is a level as to where you want to begin this whole thing---want to produce an entire broadcast studio or home studio for quality and decent work? I go for the latter. I can easily output very good looking images to prores 444 or 422 for tv that 99.8% of my clients will NEVER change the colors i've worked and transcoded to. Now, David is right i may be off a hair here and there, but looks damn good to my clients. If any of them want to change anythimg, they can have the orginal R3d file but most will just do a slight color correct via FCP Color to conform to their shows colors. There is a point to getting it good enough.
BUT that said, i'm not cutting any movies or anything other than stock footage from my end. I have been cutting this in my plasma via matrox with excellent results that i have checked on my new dreamcolor that shows me it's right on the money. In fact nothing that i would change in the dreamcolor monitor that is color calibrated as well. Bottom line (for me) i can color correct just fine from my plasma via HDMI and MXO2 just as well as my dreamcolor monitor---but that is me and my eye. I don't get too technical on any of this since it's not my primary business and for a final color conform, i leave that to the experts.

I am also looking for another monitor just for my tools and programs not for color work. For that I have a kona3 and a cinetal. Has any one took delivery of one of these new dell ultra sharp U2711 IPS monitor with WQHD resolution?

Your totally right John, I'm just trying to get the best out of the monitor.
I actually have a friend who bought one of those colorimeters today so I'm going to borrow it and see what happens!

i've been looking around for coloimeter but multi-monitor support seems to be sketcy. Anyone have any recommendations for one in general or one good for multi monitor and still get good calibration?

I've been looking into the Dell U2410 and the U2711 and the HP Dreamcolor 24".. I really want the U2711 to work for me, but from the reviews I've read, I get the impression that the Dreamcolor is the best overall. If anyone has any insight, please share. For current Dreamcolor owners, what connection do you use? I was thinking Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort.. Would be great to know if HDMI would be a better option using some kind of intermediary device..

i use these:
Dell: 2407 WFP
Dell: U2410
42" plasma connected via matrox mxo2 and hdmi
HP Dreamcolor

that said, i only use the Dells for desktop space and the dreamcolor (raw or transcoded) for color correction work as well as my plasma via matrox while looking at transcoded 422 footage. I thought i could use the U2410 for color work, but just not possible. I'd say you need to go with the dreamcolor if you are looking for one or the other. I use HDMI to the dreamcolor....i go out of my redrocket via hd-sdi to aja box that converts hd-sdi to hdmi, then this goes direct to dreamcolor to allow 10bit color.

I use 2 of these: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Touch-T260HD-25-5-Inch-Monitor/dp/B001AYCNIW as my desktop space, very nice and very cheap for what they are and tons of room with each of them almost 26". They are fed through a regular Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT card: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_8800_gt_us.html
then a Dreamcolor fed through a Quadro FX 3800: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_quadro_fx_3800_us.html which has 2 display ports, one of which is used for the Dreamcolor and the other one for a Panasonic 1080p projector, an AE 3000u: http://www.projectorpeople.com/projectors/projdtls.asp?itemid=24987 out of the other display port through a display to HDMI adapter. I may add a plasma soon, but for now, the Dreamcolor gives me very accurate critical color viewing at normal size and if I want to see what it looks like bigger, then the projector, which has great tools for tweaking color, lets me see it 140 inches across.

Very true. Most monitors will come out of the box with their standard reference color temp selections pretty well dialed in. Setting the normal hue, brightness, contrast and color saturation controls with color bars works just fine for most video finishing.

john: can u pls expand why? aren't both using the same panel?
would like to know if the HP DC extra price is worth it and what exactly is the difference from U2410 if i feed 10bit from aja or blackmagic to either.
thanks

Well, here is my 4 monitor setup:
for workspace: Dell 2407 & Dell 2410 (where i utilize FCP workspace & RCX)
For monitoring i have setup the Dreamcolor and my Phillips 42" LCD (basic tv monitor)
The Dreamcolor monitors out at 8bit from my graphics card if using FCP & then 10 bit if using my red rocket via HD-SDI via AJA converter to HDMI
The Phillips is monitoring out via Matrox HDMI 10bit

Dreacolor vs. U2410: TOTALLY different looks and I can not get it calibrated how i like it---the 2410--It's an ok monitor, but i actually prefer my 2407. Not even close to the Dreamcolor though. I've heard a lot of discussion about using a panasonic plasma instead of the dreamcolor....I've not yet tried that since my phillips is pretty good looking and used only for monitoring. But that's next on the list. But if you are considering 2410 for color work forget it. I did that my first few months and my transcodes looked great on my monitor, but when sent to stock agency and posted online, they looked horrible. Colors were really off. And i did a Mac calibration. But now have a sypder.

Would it be safe to assume that the

AJA Hi-5 3G HD-SDI to HDMI

is

THE

Box to use for converting an HD-SDI signal from the Red one to an IPS panel for client monitoring?

Thank you.

yes that is a safe assumption.

thank u.
Panasonic TC-P50VT25 Viera 50" 3D monitor is the one u r referring to, right?

that seems to be the one i keep hearing about. I'm on the fence until i hear more feedback. Great that it's 3d capbable, but that's not yet part of my workflow. Want to know more about the monitor as a cc monitor for studio.

I bought the MXO2mini and the DELL u2410 to get starting with grading a bit more seriously. Everything works fine connectionwise together with FCP3 and Apple Color. 10bit (I think)
Only problem is calibrating, I'm no expert at all and I know this is a really cheap system but there are so many settings in the monitor itself that I don't know what to do really.
Every time I set the monitor to a new setting and calibrate using the MATROX I get totally different look.
Anyone using this monitor succesfully with COLOR who can give me their monitorsettings?

I have asked to get my username changed to my real name. Just so you know.
I have a Matrox MXO2 MAX and I believe that you will find that the calibration software only works with a 1920x1080 monitor and not a 1920x1200 monitor and only using HDMI. I'm using what Matrox uses to demonstrate and it's wonderful. It's a Visio TV at 1920x1080 with HDMI.

1920x1200 is OK.....you just need to choose 1:1 pixel monitoring....it might be called something else as well. But my 3 dell monitors are ALL 1920x1200 and when i choose 1:1 pixel it sizes down to allow 1920x1080.
