  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon FD 50mm 1.2 with IMS on RED

what's with the non-circular bokeh on the edges of the framein the stills/video you posted? Is that the lens, the IMS, or something else?

re warranty

re warranty

I have been under the impression that that in terms of the various mount issues that it only voids the warranty in regards to the potential damage that they can cause as in ie. the first prototype birger mount that fried the internal electronics due to installation and or temporary faults in its design. Therefore installing the IMS or other "unapproved" 3rd party items would not effect something as in say a faulty power connector or the sensor itself. Without dragging through the threads I seem to remember Jarred acknowledging this. I personally would want a confirmation of this in writing before installing it myself. I do hope Sanjin's bravery and foresight continues to pay off for him. Like everyone I am indebted for Sanjin to get this project moving and of course your generosity with sharing.

PS. I would also like to hear how focusing the FD goes for you.

ditto that. bokeh is not very well structured...a still photographer would find it unacceptable.

It's not about IMS or RED.

IMS mount and FD adapter are just empty holes to the sensor.

Only air in a tube and nothing in between the lens glass and the sensor.

It's about lens that have one "special extra wide open" option when you have a total wide open without blades (!?).

I used that option to get the most of the light on the sensor.

But there is the "official" wide open at 1.2 when you can see blades but I did not test it because I was rushing to leave the place.

One police car passed by watched a bit and left. But I was at a famous Viennese square without any permission to shoot (!?).

Then I just left faster as I came there too.

Clipping highlights on the leaves was a part of the test concept.

Also it was a partly sunny, partly cloudy weather and the light was changing very fast from brighter to darker.

Sanjin,

Very difficult to compare here...

There is a lot of light variation in the shadow portion...

Look at the wall, from darker to lighter: Canon, Leica, and Nikon.

...and the Canon was at f6.8, 5.6 for the Leica and Nikon.

Antoine,

As I wrote it was a partly cloudy and shots were done one after each other.

The light changed.

You know that in a nature you have so called uncontrollable lighting conditions.

Unfortunately I did not have 3 REDs with 3 IMS installed to have so called simultaneous shooting.

So the light is something to not judge here with those shots.

And about that Canon was at 6.8 (that's not written on the lens) I did mistake because I didn't see it properly.

My optical glasses were not on my head and I didn't see that was at a half of the stop between 5.6 and 8.

Just happening.

"it is mind boggling to me that p+s won't take further steps, as birger had, to insure that this clearly awesome product won't void the red warranty. i would love to begin my red experience with this. "

totally agree. my camera is currently in for some repairs (which RED is doing a fabulous job on by the way--their support is incredible). If I had put IMS mount on, i would be paying for these totally unrelated repairs. Come on IMS--get your mount approved!! We all like the ability to use lots of mounts!!

Great stuff Sanjin. So nice to see footage after all of the threads where we just talked about how cool it'd be. That P&S mount seems to really be paying off.

So what's it like pulling focus on that sucker? You tried hooking up a follow focus yet?

Very interested to see what you get, man!

Oh, and please post something at 2K or HD! Pretty please!

Thanks

Hi Bruce,

per your request here is 2K H264 nightshot with Canon 5mm f1.2 at wide open using IMS on RED (40 MB, right button click to download).

Fountain shot is ASA 250, all other are ASA 500.

Sanjin,

Yeah, uncontrollable lighting conditions.

But even then, all three (at least on that frame size) performed very well with different color reproduction.
thanks!

Antoine

I'm sure my Canon 300mm f2.8 USM wouldn't mind meeting Red someday.. be very cool to go with an IMS system... looks great!!

Thanks LilRed, north of L.A Woman.

Yeah, uncontrollable lighting conditions.

Antoine,

I wouldn't say that is a big difference in color reproduction, you could easy match in post.

Newbie help: What's IMS?

"P+S Technik's Interchangeable Mount System (IMS) lets you use the same P+S lens mounts on the Mini35, Weisscam HS-1 and SI-2K. Now you can adapt Panavision, Nikon, Canon, Leica, Zeiss/Contax and BNC-R lens lenses to the RED One as well by using the IMS Front for the RED One.
The following lens mounts can be used with the P+S Technik Interchangeable Mount System on the RED camera:

Arri PL Mount, Panavision Mount, BNC-R Mount, Professional F-Mount, Nikon F-Mount, Canon EF-Mount, Canon FD-Mount, Contax Mount, Leica-R Mount and Leica-M Mount.

Also the Sony B4-Mount and the C-Mount can be used, but due to their design for 2/3“ chips, they project only a picture of 2/3” size. Based on the way the RED sensor records 2K, the B4 Mount and video lenses should work when recording 2K."

One more comparison test in a room with low lighting:

IMS_CanonFD_50mm_1-2_N1.jpg

Shot with IMS on RED: Canon FD 50mm 1.2 at f/1.2, ASA 320, K 3200, REDColor, Out/LUT REDspace, no CC.

IMS_Leica_Summilux50mm2_f1-4N.jpg

Shot with IMS on RED: Leica Summilux-R 50mm 1.4 at f/1.4, ASA 320, K 3200, REDColor, Out/LUT REDspace, no CC.

IMS-NikonAFD50mm1-8_f2-8N.jpg

Shot with IMS on RED: Nikkor AF 50mm 1.8 D at f/1.8, ASA 320, K 3200, REDColor, Out/LUT REDspace, no CC.

It's about to get a clear idea what does mean 1/2 stops up or down.

A faster lens in low light always better as everybody knows here.

Looking forward to get even 1/2 stop faster lens:

Leica-M 50mm f 1.0 Noctilux.

When is available I will get for a test.
