I am pleased to announce that Cineform has very graciously offered one of our winners a copy of their choice of Neo 4K (Mac) or Prospect 4K (Windows) as part of the prize pool! They have also offered to make their software available to utilize before and during the competition to help aid any workflow concerns some of you may have.

I thought I'd chime in and say that we're (CineForm) enthused to participate. Mike, thanks for inviting us.

For those who might want to use either our Windows or Mac workflow for the competition, we'll make Trial versions available. For a time-squeezed, short-form project like this a suggestion would be to convert to CineForm Express files (faster than RT on a fast Mac or Windows machine), then edit the Express files including color correction, transitions, Active Metadata, etc. When you're project is ready you can export an EDL from the timeline, and use the EDL to filter files (using ReMaster on Mac or R2CF on Windows) to convert to full-res CineForm media (HD, 2K, 4K) for the final export.

We have a number of Tech Notes published for converting R3D files to CineForm files and the ensuing workflow. The first-read Tech Note is here: http://www.cineform.com/products/TechNotes/RedOneWorkflow.htm

I'll post some additional information after Mike has made further progress on the competition details....

48 hour would actually be really fun, if for no other reason it would answer a lot about the post process. I believe you could establish a workflow that would actually be very quick in terms of editing.

Just finished a 36 hour challenge with RED this weekend. 48 hours would give everyone time to go to the beach and get a tan too! :clown2:

4K Challenge 72hr RED film competition

4K Challenge 72hr RED film competition

Looks like we are going to go into January for the first competition. However, we have a very generous offer to screen all the contestants entries in LA on a large screen theatre! Also, the official website is in the works. The competition is officially named 4K Challenge and will be a 72hr competition. The site is being worked on right now and we hope to have it up and running very soon.
I will post more info shortly including the rules etc of the competition.

There should be NO RULES - Except to make a short within 72 hours. Tossing out a logline or subject / object, will eliminate anyone getting a head start..

I am super stoked on this. Thanks so much for going forward on this! I can't wait to jump in. Red is the perfect camera for speedy shooting / cutting

January is good. 72 hours sounds nice.

I'm thinking that at the start of the competition, all participants are given a list with a few specific lines of dialogue, object, location, etc.. Participants must choose 2 items off the list to be incorporated into the short. Maybe just one item, depending on what sort of items, I guess.

Can't wait. I think it's going to be a blast.

I am really excited as well. We must have a few small rules to keep everyone honest and keep the competition fair for all but for the most part there won't be anything too restrictive limiting your creative freedom for your short film.

I have thought long and hard about this and want you all to be able to use this film elsewhere later ie other festivals etc. Hence the 72hrs instead of 48hrs. I know there will still be compromises in 72hrs but I think that extra day will give you a little more time to grade, and finish the projects with a little more finesse.
I will be locking in specific dates for the event/screening/after party within a week and should have all the official information necessary to share with you all, accept of course what you will get on the start day of the competition of course :-)

Mike, would the films be eligible for the festival circuit if they've already been distributed via Vuze? I doubt it personally. If that was the case would it be possible to lock off the Vuze channel to Reduser members only perhaps, so that the shorts were essentially distributed privately?

Hi Mike, January is a great time to do this. Count me in. I agree with Jeff; one phrase of dialogue and one object to be included in the film.

what about the language. should it be english? or is every other country free to shoot in its nativ spoken language? Subtitles mandatory... My feeling is that english is always better. so you don´t need to read while watching a movie.

I think that should be up to the filmmakers. Perhaps there are situations where a foreign (or even imaginary) language could be used effectively? Subtitles may or may not be necessary.

Unfortunatly, there isn't a way to make the channel on Vuze private. I do not know what film festivals have specific rules according to pre-releasing your film on the web but that is kinda the backbone of the competition. People must see and vote for the winners. This visiblity is how we are able to aquire sponsors to help out with prizes for you guys.
I would like to continue this competition a few times a year so if you cant make the first round you will have another chance next time around and so on. As I learn more about creating a fun, dynamic competition for everyone to enjoy And benefit I promise they will get bigger and better. Hell, this one is going to be pretty awesome even for a first go around. All of your requests this far have been takin into account and I appreciate your input!
