  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon FD 50mm 1.2 with IMS on RED

Sanjin,

Are you ready for a res comparo between the FD 50 f1.2 and the Leica Sum 50 f1.4 ?

Should be close...

Antoine,

Have a look at 4K crops.

My focus was on the GretaMacbeth color rendition chart and not on the resolution chart that is behind it on the pictures.

CanonFD50mm_Sharpness.jpg

Shot with IMS on RED: Canon FD 50mm 1.2 at f/1.2, cropped detail from 4K, 320 ASA, K 3200, REDColor, Out/LUT REDspace, no CC.

LeicaSumm50mm_sharpness.jpg

Shot with IMS on RED: Leica Summilux-R 50mm f 1.4 at f/1.4, cropped detail from 4K, 320 ASA, K 3200, REDColor, Out/LUT REDspace, no CC.

I would say they are the same.

More light gives you more sharpness in this case.

Hi Sanjin,

Do you have any inside knowledge if P&S and RED are progressing with their warranty discussions?

Jim

Sanjin, thanks for putting the high-res clip up. That gives me a very good sense of its usability.

Looks like you could get away with this lens plus a lightweight lighting kit and go shoot on location, very nice.

So, do you have your script yet? I'm sure you have the actresses sorted out ;)

BTW, 500 ASA seems like the borderline to me if you're super-concerned about quality. Probably a good denoise filter can help if you have the patience. Maybe add some tiny film grain on top to mask the more unsightly artifacts. People forget that telecines depend on denoise too...

Anyway, congrats!

I do not know so much but they should meet at IBC in Amsterdam and have a look for the best option.

BTW, I'm not affiliated or work for P+S or RED neither.

I'm RED User only.

Thanks Sanjin. Yeah, I know you aren't affiliated but you seem to have some serious contacts on the inside! :spidy:

LOVE the Canon 1.2 footage. Can't wait to use my own!

Bruce,

The script is still in a work.

The actresses are waiting but you know how it is with women.

You have to be fast and effective.

500 ASA is also my borderline.

Which is yours AE denoise filter best?

If you print on film than automatically you get a grain.

If you show up the file for digital projection you add a grain to reduce a noise feeling of course.

BTW, how is going with your project(s)?

Sanjin,

Then i' m impressed, the Canon holds superbly, even compared to the Leica.

And i'm even more impressed it did with 1/2 stop wider!

Now, when i use this lense, i try to stay from f2 to f8, in that range...it is very sharp.

I think you'd like the 55mm f1.2 also.

thanks for the report!

I know that feeling ;)

That is a great quote.

Believe it or not, Remove Grain works decently (but is slow). It is based on the old Grain Surgery photoshop plugin. Settings are too high by default. Turn them down and turn temporal filtering on.

To test: Furnace, of course... and also Re:Vision DeNoise.

If you print on film than automatically you get a grain.

Very true.

Well. Might be co-directing a short film in Japan in 1 month's time. No budget, of course, and we'll have to do a light run-n-gun kind of shoot with minimal lighting pack. Either Red One or EX3... so your footage is encouraging and useful! Still, I'm sure I'll be testing the NR tools quite comprehensively in the post-production stage of that one ;)

Bruce,

Thanks for reply.

Your de-noise filter advise is very good.

Foreign projects in Japan are mostly with low or even without any budget.

Fingers crossed for your little "Japanese adventure".

It's a pleasure, Sanjin. Also, if you're using the After Effects remove grain filter, make sure it is sampling from a good frame.

By default it uses frame 0 as the source for noise analysis - sometimes that is not what you want (eg if there's a slate in front or something).

Sorry for going OT.
