  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey Jim, this is just like when u first started showing clips; never enough or good enough for a lot of folks, must be very, VERY frustrating.
I can't wait to trade in for one of those cameras nobody wants and somehow I'm going to get the bucks together for the 617.

The reason why things are getting heated and people are getting pissed is because somehow you're assuming that Because there was an upgrade path for the RED ONE that all of the RED cameras have some sort of upgrade path. Take the time to read peoples posts, just because the answer didn't come directly from red, doesn't mean it was wrong.

What you are doing is basically like me demanding that Apple explains an upgrade path from my eMac which im typing on to a new iMac etc. It doesn't exist, and if it did, you'd know about it, until then, you have to live by the same rules as the rest of us. Deal with it.

Actually, it was explained, David. But I guess you wanted someone from Red to "officially" tell you. I get that. I hope you understand now.
 
The whole red concept is just amazing, thank you Jim for giving independent filmmakers a chance to shine with these amazing cameras.
 
I have a question, one that nags me while absorbing prices and specs.

My cinematography knowledge is basic from film school and the basics i've picked up from DOP's and directors from my years on set as an A.D. so bear with me.

If I had a 5k Scarlet as my "A" cam, and the 3k Scarlet as my "B" cam. Shooting the same scene (indoors and out), how would the final image work bumped up say for theatrical release.

Is the 2k difference going to make it look apparantly wrong (to the audience) editing back and forth, or can good lighting/lenses (say both using RED lenses) make it negligible?

I'm just trying to weight my options in advance, and in my planning for shooting/budget. And since all the industries brightest are reading this I know i'll get an answer that'll clear up my lack of hands-on knowledge.

Thanks Alex for "getting it". An amazing company, run by users that want to get it right. Building cameras that exceed expectations. Extending the boundaries of what people thought were possible. Offering upgrade options that return investment. Extraordinary. Revolutionary. Yet, there are those that fault it. What is their option? HD for $100K+? Guess you can't please all the people all the time ;-)

The 5k will have s35mm film Depth of Field while the 3k will have 2/3" Depth of field.

While you could stop the 3k down 3 stops to get the same DOF as s35, it would of course loose that much light...so it's all a matter of dealing with the different formats.
 
in other news - Gary Coleman has pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from a September incident at a bowling alley.
 
Are the camera brains Upgradeable for future Sensors/Heat Management Systems/Electronics, like the RedOne? :detective2:

The whole point of my question is to know my options (with cost) from moving from the R1 to the FF35!!

Pretty simple really....

RED HAS made an official statement on the brain upgrade path a couple people keep asking about. From Jarred Land himself:

If you want to upgrade the sensor down the line, you upgrade the brain. The bigger sensors need bigger brains, and more guts. Everything else though, ( modules, mounts, handles, batteries, etc. ) will follow along and still work with the upgrade.
