  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci Resolve Lite 8.1.1 released with unlimited nodes and DNxHD included

This is something else. I am now working on my first project in Resovle Lite, and ran up against the need for additional nodes. With too much money being spent on gear right now I dismissed the idea of purchasing the paid version immediately, because I'd have to buy additional kit to justify the purchase. I just figured I'd start over in Color, and then this!

Wow BMD has got a future sale in me. Full Resolve Mac and BMD card will be part of my upcoming new Mac Pro setup... soon as Apple releases the good stuff.

I recently upgraded my Mac Pro 1,1 to a 8core and ATI 5770, its nice now but I still need an NVIDIA card with CUDA to really rock Resolve. Has anyone gotten the GTX285 to work in a MP 1,1?

Oh yeah, upgraded and added a 3rd node. My new favourite toy, (next to the Epic sitting beside me) Sweet!

I keep seeing this "I will buy Resolve later, but meanwhile, thanks for the free version".
I really would like to know, beside the Remote grading portion (and even that I question for overwhelming majority of users of free Resolve), what feature or features, that is missing in Resolve would justify your purchase?
I'm really curious, how many users of free Resolve will eventually convert into paid Resolve.

I'm glad I paid 1500$ for what's essentially free now. Can BM put those 1500$ into making Resolve capable of audio pass through for dailies? Been asking for that from day 1.
Also, tell me Lite customers can't access Dwaine's brilliant tech support?

And don't forget Mark. But seriously, that kind of support is for free users too?

I suppose now you could "offline" a grade on a 1080p system, and then "online" it on a full Resolve in full resolution.

Yes, and now it's only a matter of time, before the director brings his Resolve project and says "I graded it and I just want you to polish it".
Or, "Please create a look for me and I will copy it to the rest of the project"
Happy days ahead:-)

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

You keep missing the point. I'm pretty happy with my own skill set, where I do not have to worry about armies of new "colorists" suddenly pouring into the market.
I'll be just fine:-)
But I will miss the innovation of :
"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do"
People and companies needs to be rewarded for risk and innovation and now that had been taken out of the equation.

I would almost agree with you if it weren't for the alternate interpretation of what will happen. Now that every innovation out there is available for free, companies that want to charge are going to be forced into saying, 'okay we want to get paid - so what are we going to offer these people that they've never seen before?'
It will force people into an innovate or die mindset.

Would you spend 3 months or a year working, without knowing, that you'll eventually get paid? Even while working at McDonalds, you KNOW you'll get paid:-)
At the time Colorfront came out, DaVinci systems cost at least $250k. And I'm not even talking about Spirit, Rank, EVERTZ, Lipsner-Smith etc. Now it's all virtually FREE!!! No financial incentive whatsoever...
So, please give me one example of a truly free, innovative product marketed by a company, that doesn't sell other products in order to subsidize that "free" product:-)
I'm saying it, because, again, Colofront was and is a small post house, that had no other significant revenue streams, like BM does and in today's market they would had never started the revolution in DI. Actually, that statement also applies to FilmLight.

HA! That's not even funny how OFTEN we hear this from Indies. sigh

The very reason i got out of editing... whoah boi.

What features are Lite vesrsion missing, that you'd need to buy a full version? Personally, if it weren't for remote grading, I wold be all set with the Lite version.

There is a huge list here: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/davinciresolve/compare/

2K + resolutions
3D - there are NO stereo 3D features in Resolve Lite.
Multiple Rocket
Multiple GPU
Noise Reduction

I don't use these:
Power Mastering
Remote Grading

Now .. .I mentioned 2K+ resolution, but Resolve is just a 2K system today.

I think they are preparing for a 4K future ... hell they may peer into their crystal ball and decide to support 8K too (at least theoretically) in software, by being completely resolution independent.

Today I don't see support today for using the Decklink 4K for output/monitoring. Or rendering to 4K resolutions/codecs.

All this is coming, and I think it will make the decision clearer. Especially as I think you'll see a lot more 4K destinations after "The Hobbit" and "Avatar 2" get distributed.

Also ... I think that 48fps is coming as a mainstream format. That puts even more pressure on the system processing ... which means you really need more GPU's and such.

3D with R3D sort of demands multiple Rockets.

There is plenty there for professional users.

Meanwhile, BMD has an interest in getting people to integrate Resolve NOW before Speedgrade ships with Adobe CS6 and people start using what came with their NLE.

EDIT: I wanted to add that there is no huge rush to enable 4K, even though its probably a critical future differentiator. Why? Go price a 4K panel/projector today. When those become more readily available ... then we'll see a race to make sure 4K really works well. I have high hopes for the various Red display projects.

This one doesn't make sense Jake.

Companies do this all the time. It's called R&D.

I think perhaps you aren't seeing the big picture ... Resolve has to compete against SpeedGrade which is coming almost certainly for free with CS6.

I'm gonna bet that SpeedGrade will support all the resolutions, formats and other technology Premiere Pro does. Plus I'm gonna bet it will integrate better with Premiere Pro than Color ever did with FCP 7.

That's fine ... until you see the strategy. BMD didn't buy DaVinci for Resolve or Revival. It bought DaVinci for control panels and the ability to lock an industry leading product into their hardware.

Speedgrade will probably work with BMD ... and AJA and BlueFish and Matrox ... and who knows what else.

The idea that to use Resolve you are locked into a BMD i/o card is attractive ... but it is only as good as the Resolve installed base.

So, now do you see the value of this move?

You can't render to 4k currently at all? I guess I'll hold off on buying until we can... (been waiting on the Windows version)

give indies a break. its not out of any bad mindedness. they just don't have the money to spend. so their choices are see what they can get done for what they have. the other option is not to create anything.

isnt the reason we're all here because red brought the price points down to an almost affordable level. now we see people trying to create a lower tier fiefdoms and doing saying the same things they were railing against other companies for doing. you can't pull up the drawbridge and say well its comfortable for me now so i don't want to let the peasants in now that i'm no longer a peasant

there will always be a downward price pressure on tools. ask music recording studios with 300ks worth of equipment competing with a 20k pro tools studio. its life. get over it. enjoy the tools. the best work will get seen and the crap work will be quickly forgotten

only in this netherworld that is totally disconnected from the real world is $1000 dollars for a piece of software considered cheap. I think davinci is going to end up being free for the full version. maybe you'll need to buy a piece of their hardware. but thats where its headed. $995 was a stop gap to soften the blow for high end houses with high end davinci rigs. writing on wall

next version of the imac will have a 4k screen (Retina) , next ipad will have a 2k screen , great for viewing dailies on set, sadly I don't think we're going to see another mac pro , time for a hackintosh

I just rendered 4k out with no problems whatsoever. It was DPX 4k LOG Film scan, rendered to Prores. Who says Resolve doesn't support 4k?

I actually hate it when companies give everything for free after a while,, seems not honest to us professionals who really have supported them it in the very beginning....and mostly paid a lot for licenses and hardware...

when I'm aware of just companies , I will rather choose a different solution which pays back on the long term.
