  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

currently we are using

Hackintosh OS 10.6.8
Supermicro X8DAH monther board,
2.93 Xeon 5670
pcie x 7
24 ram
2 x 470 Nvidia
Decklink HD extreme 3D

we are NOT able to see FCP preview box, when we run Final cut pro .
they said it is because 470 card NOT compatible with FCP ?

also, we can only run one 470 on resolve, cus, the other 470 used for display,
so resolve performance been suffered as well,
vendor said, they can not add in other cards,

but by reviewing your forum

i know it is not true,, but dont know how to fight back to our vendor,
can someone enlighten me ..

Hey Luigi and anyone in the know. I have a older 2007 Dual Quad core (8 cores) Xeon Mac Pro 2,1. How does the pure CPU processing power of the 6 core cpu in this hack compare to my current setup? I need a new system that can both do Color Grading and Motion Graphics at a faster rate. Thx for the info.

yes is possible Osx support max 4 gpu nvidia or ati.
you use gfy in terminal for check pciroot

I tested for several weeks, the GTX 590 the point of view vs 2 GTX 580 3GB.
I have not tried DPX files, R3D files only and h264 4K ANS 1080P 24 FPS. All on asus p6t7sc.
Of course I hope to get some feedback from a great colorist, because in this forum there are many who have tried the GTX 590 of other codecs.
The performance differences are very small "my normal work", about 10-15% more performance for configuration 2 gtx 580.
Unfortunately 2 gtx 580 heat and consume much more than a single card. Especially in a case always closed.
The GTX 590 has performed very well both in temperature, which in terms of consumption around 9-12% less.
As you know my next project is to end the portable workstation for work outside, as you know I chose HP Z800, so for me it is very important to gain slots and consume less.
I hope I can help you with your choice of GPU :biggrinjester:

They cost practically the same... around 500$ each 580 and around 750$ each 590. 1500$ the "package".

Since the 590 is practically two GPUs here my questions:
When Resolve uses a GPU for GUI, is using half 590, right? so in that hypothetical setup you have half 590 for GUI and the other half 590 for CUDA, and a 590 exclusively for CUDA, means practically 1 GPU for GUI and 3 GPUs for CUDA.

Using three 580 you're using 1 GPU for the GUI and the other two for CUDA...

So if 1x590 wins over 2x580 for heat and slots, and lose for 15% for performance, the 2x590 wins over 3x580 over every aspect (if you need that processing power...)

Let me know if I'm wrong =)

you should try;) with 2 gtx 590. and 3 gtx 580.
In terms of performance I do not think there are big differences, of course also depends on the use of DaVinci, but i prefer more redrocket ;)
I always keep a good temperature to have in the case, because even after 85 degrees. Nvidia drop in performance, so there are fewer cards the better.
Let me know if someone tries 2 gtx 590;)

hey people.
i want to buy a "low-med" budget hackintosh for davinci resolve light and have a question:
since resolve needs 2GPUs i was wondering if i can run (for example):
an intel core i5-2500K 3,3ghz "sandy bridge" with HD Graphics 3000 (does this count as one GPU?)
AND a GTX 570
or is it worth spending more money in the GTX 580?

will this work? (( i don´t need super duper real time, i am a beginner in davinci resolve ))

From what i understand,you are planing to use a non cuda card for the UI in Resolve and GTX 590 for calculations and half of the GTX 590 for UI and calculations in CS5.5...

i make little test with 24p 4k hd resolution, about 15 node with 16 decrease at 23 fps.
pics added .
this in windows system , cpu i7 950,8gb ram, raid0 with 2 disk,1 9800 gt gui, 1 gtx 590 for cuda.
In Lion recognize only 1 gpu, and with 15 node fps is 11-12.

yes is strange but with non cuda( low 700mb video board) or ati card 5770 the gui with waveform is ok, i think is a bug.. but not sure. Rohit or Peter explayn why , surely ;)

yess for premiere only 1 gpu, in this case gtx 590 is little slow vs gtx 580 about 10% -15%.
I made ​​my choice, I had 2 gtx 580 hours I sold them, I bought a gtx 590 for obvious reasons, I have also chosen as PC HP Z800 . This is because my workstation to water, it was impossible to use on set is not portable. 2 gtx 580 to 1.5GB or3GB is better than 1 GTX 590, I did some tests and even if I lose 2 or 3 of 15node ,I think a good colorist does not exceed 7 nodes.
Maybe Jake gives us a tip and advice;)
I do not care, better to have 1 pcie slot free for another Redrocket or Raid card for DPX;)

I buy a gtx285 today but i have a problem with the power (not enought power cable in the Z800 ... for the gtx285 ... strange) tell me when you receive your Z800

do not spend the money for 6 core, use them to buy a card redrocket.
the power adapters can be found on ebay from1 6pin to 2 8pin I took them and they work well.

So, i install lion with unibeast, install ok,
- processor OK
- ram OK
- quadro 4800 OK
- ethernet OK
- audio NO (or wooddoo version)
- firewire NO (for the moment)
- LSI sas OK (sas or SATA) (incredible, no ?)
- SATA NO
- BOOTLOARDER (chimera) NO (i boot with the unibeast USB key)

tell me when you receive you Z800, and give me your impressions and Kexts solution if you have it ;)
