  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

hello luigi,
power is ok ... :) now,
So, i install lion with unibeast, install ok,
- processor OK
- ram OK
- quadro 4800 OK
- ethernet OK
- audio NO (or wooddoo version)
- firewire NO (for the moment)
- LSI sas OK (sas or SATA) (incredible, no ?)
- SATA NO
- BOOTLOARDER (chimera) NO (i boot with the unibeast USB key)

tell me when you receive you Z800, and give me your impressions and Kexts solution if you have it ;)

Ciao Nicolas,
thanks for your information.
I did not know that it worked well multibeast, the better;)
10.7.2 Lion?
I think for not having firewire solutions.
For port Sas I looked at the mainboard, the SATA have a block when you enable ahci, I predicted, however, I also use the ports SAS, LSI drivers are already included in the OSX kernel.
For audio I think we should patch the dsdt and then add a kext, I do not think is difficult.
You see all of core cpu? the cpu is hot or normal temperature?
Did you use GFX string? you already have the adresse of the PCIe x16 slot for?
It would be nice to do a little tow-how on how you installed Lion DVD, the CD multibeast, so I am concerned only to make an installer for the drivers.
Once you've done the tests we open a nice thread here in reduser, the HP Z800 Davinci and dual boot osx and win7 .
thanks
Luigi

EDIT:

Just read all 49 pages, hot stuff. Thank you very much for sharing guys. Thumbs up!
I will now buy the needed components:

• ASUS P6T7
• I7 6-core
• 24 GB Corsair RAM
• 128 GB SSD
• 6x 2TB HDD for Raid-5 (Software Raid)
• 2x Nvidia GTX 470 or 580 -> (only EVGA or can i buy any manufacturer?)
• Blackmagic HD SDI card
• First air cooled, if everythings works fine: waaaatercoolio!

I use the Adobe CS 5.5 suite and also want to use Resolve. I read that the Blackmagic cards
switch-off the CUDA support in Premiere and After Effects. Can you affirm this?

Some thoughts:

- Maybe there will be a PCI-e Thunderbolt card in the near future? What do you think?
- Also i think about using the newer Intel-socket 2011. Has anyone of you tried socket 2011?
It should be save for some more years, i only want to change the cpu if more power is needed.

Ciao Fabian,
well I guess now there is no longer 'need to make a hackintosh, Davinci windows, each update isincreasingly full of news, even the latest beta can now transcode to ProRes if necessary.
From what I understand they try to understand the stability of proress in windows, then add the code in 4444.FFmbc is making great strides in this direction.

Anyway to answer your request, the components are fine, I choose the gtx 470. For price and performance are the best. The 5xx series still has some small problems and the gtx 590 in osx driver has not yet beenimplemented to control 2 gpu on one pcb. But I think that will never come. I see no big news in the Apple Mac Pro, Thunderbolt is not a solution on my own, a door that is shared is not a dedicated pci-e.
So if you want a board made a good PC, although to be honest I do not like windows, but I must admit that now is the best solution, many cards available, you only have to choose from.
I bought a used hp z800, I must say that the machine is built very well, I did not notice performance differences with my ASUS P6T7, unless you've got a redrocket.
You can use the 8-port SAS for internal disci raid, and 6 port sata esata as hot-swap.
Just have a bit of time lighthouse 'an installer for this workstation, so you can use it as a hackintosh, maybecan come in handy.

thanks
Luigi

Ciao Luigi,

your answer is very important - why build up a Hackintosh? We need to decide where the trip is going to... We work on old 8-Core 2.1 MacPros, waiting for an update to come. Like you said, nobody knows if the new series will be available in the next month, maybe never. We kicked Final-Cut and Color and switched to Premiere and Resolve. OSX is like a religion, once beeing a part of it, you'll never get out... :D

Well, the next step is to figure out which hardware is the best to use it in a up-to-date PC. Because now we can choose other components, maybe a dual-mainboard with 2x6-core i7. Or is the z800 the best option here ? Now i am a bit confused what to do...

EDIT:
Does somebody know if i can use every Nvidia card for Davinci Resolve on a Windows 7 PC? Or do i have to pay attention... in the Resolve manual there are only the Quadro FX and the 580 GTX certified. The idea is to wait until dual-core mainboards for socket 2011 are available (after Cebit), then building up something like this:

• 2x I7 6-core -> 12 core
• Dual-ASUS Socket 2011
• 24 GB Ram
• 2x Nvidia GTX 470 (or 1x 580)

ciao Fabian,
I understand for OSX, I would recommend a HP z800.
I tried a gtx 460/470/480/580/590 all cards work for CUDA work, you should use a gtx 590 in hp z800, efficient and uses only one pci-e slot. I've installed in my hp z800 a gtx 590 only for Resolve, 2 gpu, and a 9800 gt as a gui.
I chose the 9800 gt 512mb for a reason, this board does not exceed 512mb, and therefore not qualified to work Cuda. So Adobe Premiere, you must pay to use the gtx 590;)
I am working with RED files 5K EPIC and the machine is working day and night without a hitch.
In the coming weeks off from work soon, will convert 'this machine in Hackintosh, so as to have a dual boot win / osx. If in the meantime Blackmagic insert the Windows ProRes 4444, at which point forsake 'option Hackintosh.

Ciao Luigi,
Can you elaborate,i don't understand...

Ciao Jean,
sorry but my English is bad, (
In my system I have a 9800 gt and 1 gtx 590.
Use the 9800 gt 512 mb as a gui, in this system I have 2 gpu for Davinci resolve, and still use the gtx 590 for the Mercury engine.
Cuda provides that the cards under 800MB can not eleborare with the gpu.
If I had only used a gtx 590, the mercury would have been ok, but Davinci would have seen only 1 gpu for cuda and in any case the benefits are lowered so much, I did some tests and I can not even get in real time with a redrocket. But this trick with the 9800 gt works fine. 1 gtx 590 i lowe 10-15% vs 2 gtx 580 , but i gain in slot for another redrocket ;)

Aloha Luigi,

is a Z800 so much better than a selfmade PC with good components? A Z800 with 12-cores costs 6412,91 Euro! For the best components (2x6core, 1x590GTX, Dual-mainboard, 24GB Ram, Bluray etc.) i will pay about 3300,00 Euro. Thats half the price... I don't have any support, okay...

Like i said - i will wait until the computer expo "cebit" is over and dual boards for the new socket will be available. The Z800 is nice, but i think the money can do more if you choose only the best components. I want a 12-core !! ;)

eheh Fabian.
i repeat i have buy hp z800 used, but with itcreation you have 5 yers garantie;)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Z800-WOR...865527?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item337184dfb7

3000 dollar is coomplet syste with gtx 590 ;)

Cuda provides that the cards under 800MB can not eleborare with the gpu.
So when you toggle between Premiere and Resolve, you move your GUI monitor from the GTX 590 to the 9800 GT....

ciao luigi,

can resolve in windows use 3x 470? i cant upgrade to 590 yet.

graci,

pablo

@Jean, you dont need to toggle.

for premiere pro playback is all CPU power. the gpu only kicks in during rendering and outputting. in project settings -> general you have to select mercury playback gpu acclerated and as long as you're gtx is in the list it would automatically use it.

right now it only detects 1 gpu hopefully cs 6.0 they will add multiple gpu support without going telsa/maximus cards.

haha

I have bought the same config as yours. HP z800 and 9800 and 590GTX. I hope you can help me when i get at my home.

ThankYou

I have 9800gtx and with Luigi we found that it slows the system( with two 285gtx for processing).
When I change it with 460gtx every thing went OK.
So In my case DaVinci needed GUI card with similar 2D performance as GPU cards or it will slow the system down to 9800 performance.
My system is Asus mobo with 3 GPUs, Red Rocket on Lion Hack.

In my case one 480 is faster, then 480 + Quadro 3800. Changed different pci lanes for the graphics -- it stays the same(performance with only 480 is better). not even speaking 9600 + Q3800.
