This card does look interesting.
But do keep in mind that it is 2 @ GTX460 each with 1GB. It is NOT a 2GB card. (If you have 2 @ GTX285 1GB you don't call them a GTX285 2GB card just because they are both in same place) Each GTX460 core has access to just 1 GB at a time.
So, less RAM than either a GTX470 or GTX480.
Also, the reviews on Newegg seem to indicate a rather high failure rate.
I may try getting one and equipping it with an Mac EFI ROM and see if either Mr. Blackstone or Mr. Smith would like to test it out. I have a GTX460 that really has 2GB on hand with Mac EFI. I also have a Tesla C2050 ready for testing. It shows up with 3GB (2.7 with ECC) of RAM, current champ in OSX for overall RAM. (GTX580 has a 3GB version but not sure these are stable yet)
It might make an interesting card for people with limited slots. One 460 could be GPU and the other GUI in theory.
Thanks for your cool supercomputer help. This thread has inspired me among others to go for a Hackintosh. I managed to get a system up and running almost flalessly in a day. However I haven't used the machete system, I'm using a Gigabyte board with a GTX 580 and Radeon 5770 and used instructions from somewhere else.
I figured you might be able to help me out. My problem is that I can boot fine with either card and also with both of them and 3 displays, but I can only get the GTX 580 performance when the card is in as a single GPU, otherwise, with both cards all apps will only use the 5770 performance.
DaVinci was blazingly fast with the GTX only, 4k realtime, but with both cards it's just half as smooth. Also I couldn't figure out how to set one of my displays as monitoring screen, the whole thing is always stuck inside one screen. Sorry if this is off topic, it just seems here's where hackintosh and DaVinci knowledge comes together. Thanks.
So far I am seeing 2 @ GTX460 each running 1 GB of RAM and able to produce 623 Gflop/s in single precision.
A single GTX480 has 1.5GB of RAM and can do about 1,300 Gflop/s so it isn't a "480 killer" in that sense.
Haven't written an EFI for it yet, just using a hack injector.
As to whether it could be a "Single GPU" that enabled both GUI and GPU functions of Resolve, I am not sure.
Will update
So this guy got two GTX580s running in Lion on a legit Mac Pro. Seems to have Cuda functioning well too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYa39Y5nR6A
I was planning to build a Hackintosh as per Luigi's awesomeness. But half my business is motion graphics and I'm concerned I may need more power than a single cpu can provide. Wondering if something like this in an external Cubix box is the way to go.....thoughts?
Is that on your Hackintosh or an actual Mac Pro? Either way awesome!
I know that it's has been discussed in this thread but Why not build a Hackintosh with EVGA SR-2 and Xeon 5690 instead of buying a HP Z800? I'm thinking the same option as you because i want a powerful machine for my davinci.
I think HP is only 6 PCI slots and with EVGA SR-2 you have 7. If someone is interested on EVGA SR-2 please PM to me. But i'm going to think your Z800 option because for me Luigi you are the best.
Sounds great, I' could help you if you want it. I'm going to buy one HP Z800 Xeon 5690. And build one system. I have studied versus EVGA SR-2 and HP Z800 is cheaper than EVGA option. If you want my help for something please ask for it.
