  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

a little update ....

this is a driver for External sata port.
But is not hot plug. Must boot whit the disc attacked.

install:
1. unzip kext driver
2. copy this driver in folder /system/library/extensions.
3. reboot
4. on marvell in bios
5. connect disck to external port

EVGA GTX 460 2WIN

EVGA GTX 460 2WIN

I love this thread. Luigi is the man. Thanks to everyone else for contributing all sorts of interesting info.

So, i've been thinking.. since the GTX4xx (460, 470, 480) series is the most stable way to go at this point.. has anyone here done a build with the EVGA GTX 460 2WIN? Its basically two 460s on ONE board with 672 (336 x 2) Processor Cores @ 700MHz core / 1400MHz shader clock and 2GB of GDDR5. aka simply better than a GTX 480.

It seems many slept on this card because it came out after nVidia released their 5xx series of cards and most people forgot about the 4xx. But when you look at the specs..

Quadro 4000 - 256 cuda cores w/ 2GB GDDR5 - 750 USD.
Evga 480 - 480 cuda cores w/ 1.5GB GDDR5 - ± 500 USD (hard to find)
Evga 460 2win - 672 cores w/ 2GB GDDR5 - 350 USD (after rebate @ newegg)

You can buy 2x of these for the price of one quadro and get roughly ... 5x times the performance. You would still need a 1000w+ PSU like most people here and you'd need to run it on air because there aren't any waterblocks at this point. Which can be good or bad depending on each build. But for people who don't feel comfortable doing liquid cooled builds - the stock cooler looks pretty solid.

I'm looking forward to everyone's thoughts! I might even try it for myself next week..

This card does look interesting.

But do keep in mind that it is 2 @ GTX460 each with 1GB. It is NOT a 2GB card. (If you have 2 @ GTX285 1GB you don't call them a GTX285 2GB card just because they are both in same place) Each GTX460 core has access to just 1 GB at a time.

So, less RAM than either a GTX470 or GTX480.

Also, the reviews on Newegg seem to indicate a rather high failure rate.

I may try getting one and equipping it with an Mac EFI ROM and see if either Mr. Blackstone or Mr. Smith would like to test it out. I have a GTX460 that really has 2GB on hand with Mac EFI. I also have a Tesla C2050 ready for testing. It shows up with 3GB (2.7 with ECC) of RAM, current champ in OSX for overall RAM. (GTX580 has a 3GB version but not sure these are stable yet)

It might make an interesting card for people with limited slots. One 460 could be GPU and the other GUI in theory.

Nick thanks for the post, the very nice 460,
You could try to see if it works, I hope is not like the GTX 590 ... As the bastard to detect the second gpu.
Let me know;)

Thanks for your cool supercomputer help. This thread has inspired me among others to go for a Hackintosh. I managed to get a system up and running almost flalessly in a day. However I haven't used the machete system, I'm using a Gigabyte board with a GTX 580 and Radeon 5770 and used instructions from somewhere else.

I figured you might be able to help me out. My problem is that I can boot fine with either card and also with both of them and 3 displays, but I can only get the GTX 580 performance when the card is in as a single GPU, otherwise, with both cards all apps will only use the 5770 performance.

DaVinci was blazingly fast with the GTX only, 4k realtime, but with both cards it's just half as smooth. Also I couldn't figure out how to set one of my displays as monitoring screen, the whole thing is always stuck inside one screen. Sorry if this is off topic, it just seems here's where hackintosh and DaVinci knowledge comes together. Thanks.

Got the GTX460 2Win

Got the GTX460 2Win

So far I am seeing 2 @ GTX460 each running 1 GB of RAM and able to produce 623 Gflop/s in single precision.

A single GTX480 has 1.5GB of RAM and can do about 1,300 Gflop/s so it isn't a "480 killer" in that sense.

Haven't written an EFI for it yet, just using a hack injector.

As to whether it could be a "Single GPU" that enabled both GUI and GPU functions of Resolve, I am not sure.

Will update

Sebastian,
try to use this in debug menu in Resolve:

LsManager.3.NumGPUs = 1
LsManager.3.GPUMapping = 1
LsManager.3.GPUMappingEnable = 1

Very interesting Dave, thanks for the post.
I do not kill in terms of performance the 480, but we have much more cuda in a pcb. Perhaps we would have something more or something less performance, but surely the 2win costs less and is available with a good heat sink. We put 2 gpu cards and have 3 + gui and uses only 3 pcie and pcie 4 still have free, that makes me happy;) 3 gpu total, gui + 1, 2 red rocket, raid 1, and 1 Blackmagic 3D. This would be a nice bomb :scared: do not you think?
I do not think is a problem which must be selected and what gpu gui, you just put the right information in debug mode.
I look forward to hearing from you if you have the chance to try the evga 2win.

thanks

So this guy got two GTX580s running in Lion on a legit Mac Pro. Seems to have Cuda functioning well too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYa39Y5nR6A

I was planning to build a Hackintosh as per Luigi's awesomeness. But half my business is motion graphics and I'm concerned I may need more power than a single cpu can provide. Wondering if something like this in an external Cubix box is the way to go.....thoughts?

I'm trying to run 2 gtx 580 in my system but I'm not a big hack that stable .....
I have little time at this time ...:(

thanks luigi

I should be on the right track ....
for now stable and good performance, 1 + 2 gtx 470 gtx 580.

Is that on your Hackintosh or an actual Mac Pro? Either way awesome!

not have Mac pro .. is my hack....
i wait my HP z800 next month... i will make this new machine dual boot whit osx and pc ..

I know that it's has been discussed in this thread but Why not build a Hackintosh with EVGA SR-2 and Xeon 5690 instead of buying a HP Z800? I'm thinking the same option as you because i want a powerful machine for my davinci.

I think HP is only 6 PCI slots and with EVGA SR-2 you have 7. If someone is interested on EVGA SR-2 please PM to me. But i'm going to think your Z800 option because for me Luigi you are the best.

I found a PCI-e splitter, Since the Ethernet doesn't work :( (really a bummer being Quad 100/1000). It at least gives me a chance to put small items like fw800,sil3132,usb3,and expresscard34 readers.

The real problem with this board is that its too big and putting it inside a Rackmount chassis is expensive and difficult.. It's the only thing keeping me from using it more often, Since most of my work is done on the set..

Ciao Cesar,

I choose HP Z800, for obvious reasons.:ihih:

1. solid machine, portable, and full supported for Linux ,my Hack-cooled water is impossible to carry .

2.Davinci works fine with 1 processor, 2 processors need the Adobe suite.

3. Davinci made enormous strides, and with the release of Windows will take many users, although I do not like Windows but I have to admit that more freedom of choice in hardware.

4. I do not want to build a machine from scratch, especially with a mainboard as the SVR-2 I do not like and I do not like it ever, we find through ebay hp z800 dual xeon used cheaply.

5.Sto looking for a solution to integrate 2 gtx 580. 1 Quadro NVS 290 gui. 1 red rocket. 1 black magic 3d. in worstation hp z800 without too much heat.
would be great. Transportable and fully functional on tweety fronts.
For the premiere does nothing if not using CUDA, choose 'software option mercury. work and will make the 2 processors.

I am testing now the GTX 580 on Hack to see stability.
I will wait, and maybeto make MACHETE 2 for hp z800.

thanks
Luigi

Great) For me z800 - very interesting too)

Sounds great, I' could help you if you want it. I'm going to buy one HP Z800 Xeon 5690. And build one system. I have studied versus EVGA SR-2 and HP Z800 is cheaper than EVGA option. If you want my help for something please ask for it.

Ciao Cesar,
thanks,
certain aspect of my own, then you may need for the 6 core;)
