  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

hi all

(ciao Luigi , sono italiano)

does anyone have an hackintosh here running resolve and having 2 Red Rocket ?

i am using the MacPro for Resolve and i have installed the Cubix Desktop 4 to add 2 Rockets , but i have the feeling that the bandwidth is an issue ... i cab't get Epic Full debayer realtime even at 10 Bit ...also even 1/2 res is not rock solid playback ....so i am wondering if anyone here have a dual rocket on a hackintosh and i would love to see the benchmark on playing back epic ...

Thanks !

Ciao Gabriele,

ciao
Luigi

Hi Luigi!

I'm writing from Italy too, but that's wrong writing in italian because not everybody can understand...

So...
I'm a young editor that want to be a colorist, working on DaVinci resolve Lite since last month and I absolutely love it.

I'm working on an iMac 27 i7 (mid 2010) for heavy work and Macbook Pro 17" i5 (mid 2010) for experiments when i'm not at home...
The Hackintosh could be a solution. I made some sheets in Excel with various configuration for various uses of the workstation, from just "experiment" to RED Epic in 3D.
The configurations are made in a way that the next step is identical at the previous but with some extra components, so you could upgrade to the next step when you want without change any component, just buy others.

The uses were:
- Experiment
- DSLR footage
- DSLR footage (advanced)
- RED foorage
- RED footage (advanced)
- RED footage (3D or HDR)

starting from 1400€ to 20.000€, ready to work.

Now i'm out of home for a Triathlon race and I haven't the sheet here, I'll come back on monday.
If I publish some configuration, could you help me to be sure that are compatible and eventually find better solution?

Byez!

EDIT:
Here a quick sheet made last hour:

Prices are from ebay or similar plus a 10%, so it's almost the same price for buying it everywhere.
Some components aren't specified, so you can advice with a specific model or adding some components that are foundamental ;)

Byez!

Ciao Rosario,
I suggest you use the gtx 470 or 480 , 580 now not work, and more repeat and increased very little.
Apple does not do anything for most processors nvidia, and then it becomes difficult to operate the latest generation of cards.
I apologize but I can not read your chart I believe that the resolution is wrong, however if you want to work with 3D files EPIC, you have many cards REDROCKET. A good compromise is to have 2 REDROCKET , 2 gtx 470, 1 Blackmagic 3D. Vawe, and Davinci Resolve full version, not Lite.
Expect to see your table Exel bigger, so I can give you a hand;)

thanks Luigi

HI Rosario,

I'm really interested in your excel sheet, but like Luigi, I can't read it. Can you post a better resolution please?

Thanks!

Pepo

Hi Luigi,

I try to read the whole thread but I got a bit lost... Maybe you can help me point out in the right direction!

I'm thinking about a hackintosh resolve system, that is able to do HD 1080 resolution really well. So no 4k or stereo or even RED, but just the more broadcast type of use.

Can you help me out a little bit on what to start looking for? How many graphic cards? Which ones? What kind of motherboard?

Thanks in advance,
Pepo

Forum resizing made it illegible, I'll upload the image asap ;)
The configuration if I remember good, is:
i7 960
Asus P6T7 supercomputer
Ati with displayport connector for GUI (need advice from you)
Monitor dell 1920x1080 21.5" for GUI at first step, then it becomes an output monitor or for scopes.
Monitor Dell 27" for gui (pro user only)
Sad 120gb os, for advanced user only
Storage: raid from 1 to 12tb
Cuda: 1-3x nVidia 470 or 2-3x nVidia 580 for advanced
Redrocket for red users and 2x for 3d
Intensity pro for not-red uses
Blackmagic decklink studio 3G for red users
Plasma 50" for advanced users
Davinci resolve lite only for students, complete for all others.
Wave for broadcast. Euphonix for red
4-24gb ram ddr3 based on the uses.

@Rosario

Im a bit new to this, so forgive for asking any stupid question!

Why would you need an ati with displayport connector? Is 2 GTX 470, for example not enough?

Thanks,
Pepo

Ciao Rosario,
please only Nvidia card for hackintosh p6t7 supercomputer,

thanks
Luigi

ok guys,
now going to help 'only people with Lion, the version for snow has been removed from the download.

thanks

ah fine, so there is any cheap nVidia card with displayport for 10bit monitoring on dell u2711 (just for gui)?

Here the hi-res image ;)

@Pepijn:
because they are cheaper and aren't needed for CUDA computing (dedicated to 470 or newer, that aren't used for gui, only gpu processing)
I didn't know that p6t7 aren't good with ati cards, so what did you advice? gtx 285 or gt120?

ciao Rosario,
ok for :
CPU;MOBO;RAM;HDD;MONITOR;TV;REDROCKET;HDMI;SOFTWARE.

NOT ok for :
VIDEO card , i repeat only 285/460/470/480 all same for GUI e for CUDA
SURFACE: Only Wave , Euphonix is ethernet connection i have solution but is complicate for network protocol.

ANd important where is BLACKMAGIC 3D deklink? this is important for colorist out SDI and HDMi for big Plasma .
one more thing, 2 redrocket in EPIC file 5k R3D Hdrx 10/16 bit, do not go in real time at full resolution , only in half-resolution and you must have 2 / 3 gpu Nvidia in RESOLVE.
I'm doing some tests with Gabriele Turchi.

thanks
Luigi

I'll update it asap ;)
do you suggest 285 + 470 or 285 + 2x470 and so on?
i didn't know about the euphonix, i saw it on a real mac and was amazing, but it's ok, wave isn't bad ;)
i wrote ultrastudio 3d, but i mean decklink 3d, i wrote it without checking online for correct product names ^^
with two redrocket for 3d, half resolution debayering is good!
I don't know if everyone feels good using active 3d on plasma monitors, i prefer using passive glasses on LCD, more confortable for many hours at day work.
So you can do the color grading on plasma on one track at time with full debayer, and when doing 3D use half debayer (since the monitor displays 1920x54). from 4K source it will be far good.
realtime with two flux will be fixed with a driver update from RED or not?

Ciao Rosario,
As you said it best all the same, for example 3 GTX 470 or 3 GTX 480 or 3 285, never mix gpu in hachintosh.
With 2 redrocket can safely go in real time with a single in 5k track is 24/25 frames, there are no problems.
Even in real time, why go to 5k hdrx or 3D would mean about 5 GB per second of bandwidth, think very hard to get now.
A tip Rosario, never be satisfied. More resolution you have and more bits deph you have, the better the product becomes and will last you a long time;)
This requires a good colorist in his system.
Thank you again for your table that looks correct.

thanks
Luigi

Luigi

When doing color grading, yes, it's absolutely true! But when doing 3D adjustment based on convergences and rotation, half res could be good for working; switching to fullres when needed =)

I updated the video cards, some prices and little changes.

Rosario,

I bought a wave last april and it was around 1500 euro. So either I was ripped of or you are basing your prices on converted dollar prices, which doesn't always work. I think 1.400 euro could be the current price for the wave.

Ciao

Thanks! i'll update the chart and i'll publish it when there are relevant changes ;)

If I want to build a Hackintosh with just a single quadro 4000 card, I believe I still need another card for the gui right? What card be would be good to use for this purpose?

Thanks in advance,
Pepo

Hi,

I wanted to update finally my hackintosh to Lion. I followed Luigi's guide but couldn't boot from the hdd.
I tried booting it via USB, but that should be the problem, since I have a backup copy of osx 10.6.8 on an other hdd which I'm able to boot from.

So maybe I did something wrong...

Download Lion via App store
Use the downloaded image
Prepare an hdd in an usb adapter
Follow the vid tutorial
Install Machete Chameleon + 3 GPU
restart

Any mistakes there?

Thanks
David
