  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Davinci Resolve 12.5? NAB2016

Jake, you´re very patient… I´m still on 11 and on an old MP, just because I didn´t dare to upgrade OS, Resolve and Desktop Video during an unfinished job. Now I would have the time to do it but reading about stability issues in 12 I´m not sure anymore. Did your major issues start with V12, as my Resolve 11 runs fairly good.

Hi Ulf.
Yes, until V12 came on the scene I could always rely on Resolve to do a glitch and crash free render, as well as to consolidate and trim R3Ds without a crash. I finally found the latest 12.3.2 to be semi stable, but I still can't consolidate a movie without Resolve stopping in the middle of copying. My client in NY still reports about one in three attempts to render, that end in crashes. When I installed 12.3.1 and tried to render, Resolve would immediately crash. Installing 12.3.2 did help and I was finally able to render.
So, if you still happy with 11 and you don't require new features in V12, just stay put. Hopefully 12.5 will be better. For one, BM is making an attempt to replace OFX plugins, like Sapphire with their own versions, that don't use OFX. Also, a little known nugget, that I found in 12.5 notes. Apparently now you will be able to kick off the Prores render from Windows, as long as the rendering computer could render Prores. So, if I understand it correctly, you could conceivably do a grade on Windows Resolve and render Prores on a networked Mac or Linux Resolve. Luckily, courtesy BM, I just won a Linux dongle at the colorist mixer in Las Vegas:) This idea is very much akin to the way Baselight used to render Prores on Linux using Kompressor on a remote Mac before they got the Prores license on Linux. I'm going to investigate this possibility and if this works like advertised, I'm moving my Mac Resolve business to a Windows computer!

What the hell are you talking about? Just stop this nonsense. Seriously I don't give a crap about your situation, I didn't direct anything towards you. It's not your thread or forum and the world doesn't revolve around you. I don't give a crap about those other people having problem, if you care so much about them then comfort them instead of spreading your anger around like you do. You are taking things way too personal and I suggest you stop this. If you are gonna get aggressive against people who like something that you don't like then you need to seriously look over your behavior. I don't know what you are trying to accomplish by asking me to try something else and then tell you if Resolve "is soooo good". You just won't understand a simple fact... Resolve. Works. Perfectly. Fine. for. Me. And. Has. Been. For. Years.
So, I was trying to be friendly about the fact that things doesn't work for you, but obviously you can't seem to accept other people so... I don't give a crap about you having problems, I like my Resolve. Period.

Yes, and I'm the angry one:wink5:

The new additions sound really impressive. If they actually work it will be good bye Adobe.

Wait till the will be BLE for PPro. You may then need to rethink your position:)
Unfortunately, it may take a while (another year perhaps) and by that time Adobe may indeed become irrelevant...

I am staying put with 11 only because I like the less clunky NLE feeling I get with 12.

Not a hater just like my volume on 11 ;)

That is very good news for Resolve on Windows users!

Remember, what that all means, for networked rendering both networked machines must have access to the same volumes, they both must be connected to the same database and both must have a dongle. But if that means you then can render Prores on Windows to me it is certainly worth the effort and the extra dongle cost.

This is just trolling behavior, I hope mods take note.
Your earlier post pretty much said it all about your caring attitude:
"I don't give a crap about those other people having problem"
"I don't give a crap about you having problems"

Yep, that is a model behavior indeed...

Jake, with all due respect… you're way out of line.

You tend to turn every thread about DaVinci into a wine fest. I totally see why Christoffer loses his patience.

The ONLY way to talk about anything, really, is from one's own perspective. If there is one single thing that drags the internet down into the sewers it's users' lack of communications skills. People tend to say "Canon cameras suck", when what they really mean is "Canon cameras suck for my needs". It might as well be "RED cameras are a cumbersome clusterfuck", when what they really mean is "I don't find the proper assist tools in RED cameras and I don't have time for that kind of post work". Everything is subjective.

Now, you might think that DaVinci is, objectively, a piece of crap. You have links to user stories that support that claim. Here's the thing though: I'm sure there are an equal amount of users that have great experiences—Christoffer (and me) included. I use Resolve on a MacBook Pro as well as on a modded 4.1 12 core Mac Pro. For what I do with the software, it works great split between those pretty different configurations. I don't use all the features—I'm sure few do. As a free to download software with its current feature set (or even if you need to pay all of the $500)… well… you really need to make quite a few assumptions about other people to knock it that hard.

I wanted to write sooner but kept from it since it's brings absolutely nothing positive to the table. Then again with your "I.give.up." post, I was tempted to write again to encourage you to stick to that promise. I had a feeling you wouldn't. Well.

Feel free to quote me as you like here, I won't engage in this discussion further.

Not that it matters, but this comes from a guy that signed up to Liftgammagain a while back to learn something from guys like you and Marc (and other actually working professionals). My first impression from you on LGG was positive and that I should pay attention to your posts. From THAT position, you have COMPLETELY spent that trust capital over a couple of threads here on reduser the last few months.

Thanks Jake. I´ll probably start a save approach with a new HD, so I can switch back. Let´s hope those issues get ironed out soon. So if I extract that deeply hidden grain of information from Christoffers full page rants Resolve 12 is running OK on windows machines?

I think BM could take leaf or two out of REDs playbook.

+) They need to introduce OS tracing and dump logs that can help accelerate in-house repetition of bugs.
This should massively reduce the amount of effort it takes in users trying to explain with the aid of screenshots what they did, and BM engineers to reproduce internally.

+) They need to celebrate (publish) all the bug-fixes in smaller (and more frequent) Beta releases. The great thing about this is the people who raised the explicit bugs will Test them for you (in that Beta version) - which will likely test other 'corner cases'.

I suspect that when BM doubled the size of the Resolve engineering team, their most profitable first step would be to ADD as many new Disruptive features to their base software to draw newcomers in.

At some point - I hope that more resources will be devoted to 'evergreening' stale code, or that a definitive process of bug-fixing is entered.

Writing defensive code that religiously checks a assumptions takes considerably longer to write. It can make the code run slower - but it is usually far more stable (and / or flag the moment that issue was hit).

The problem with Not writing defensively is that Maintenance and 'Bug Fixing' code where programming assumptions are No Longer valid can take an Age to reproduce, track down, and understand enough to 'resolve without possibly introducing another bug.

With any luck by Resolve 13 - enough faith will be restored for everyone to try out this incredible piece of software.

So if I extract that deeply hidden grain of information from Christoffers full page rants Resolve 12 is running OK on windows machines?

Yes it does, at least at mine. I use Resolve since 12 as my only NLE, Premiere is gathering dust since than.
Haven't had any mayor trouble, but my machine is up to the specs (besides still running Win7) .

I do 1 hour timelines without any hickups. Also never saw render glitches like the Mac guys.

With every update, everything becomes more fluid and fast, especially editing and playback.
Even 4.6k Ursa DNGs, Arri raw or Red material.

Happy camper, can't complain.

After a crash, restart the application, Option/Alt click on the Help menu and select “Create Diagnostics Log On Desktop”.

I did say i give up, but it's only in response to endless rants of Christopher. I have no problem discussing my opinions in regards to Resolve with you:)
Luckily I don't need write a long treatise in this case. All I'd like to ask you to do is direct me to where I wrote, that " DaVinci is, objectively, a piece of crap". Instead, I'd like to refer you to my original request in regard to Resolve 12.5:
"I am just hoping for one single new feature in it's latest incarnation- a stable Resolve.
Thank you..."

If you feel this request, as you stated, is "way out of line", then we clearly have different idea about what constitutes a line...

Thanks Frank, yes, I´d like to skip premiere, too and will do so probably if Resolve 12.5 is running stable. The new features add all I miss on my current state of v11. I very much enjoy working with Resolve. May be if some more people (like me) would buy the studio version instead of using the free version the BM Team around Resolve could do an even better job.
And yes, Apple had been turning away from their former user base, especially here in EU where we had a long period without any Pro Mac, really tempted to change camps and build a beefy machine…
BTW, I found valuable information on Jakes posts and don´t understand Christoffers rage, this is childish, time to chill down :-)

Jack is right Davinci 12 is really unstable on OSX platform, means specially on MACPRO trash .. I would not recommend making a grade with the customer in the room !!

Unlike Windows 10 to be all more stable but only for now on Supermicro platform, for the rest I still see instability.

PC WINDOWS 10; Faster, more renewable, less expensive ... but goddamn it years which are expected to ProRes on Windows and do not understand why they do !!!
Com on BM , a license fucking, enabling a ProRes in windows....

So MacMini / MACPRO the network to transcode to ProRes with mediaencoder;).

Hi Ulf.
Apparently now you will be able to kick off the Prores render from Windows, as long as the rendering computer could render Prores. So, if I understand it correctly, you could conceivably do a grade on Windows Resolve and render Prores on a networked Mac or Linux Resolve. I'm going to investigate this possibility and if this works like advertised, I'm moving my Mac Resolve business to a Windows computer!

Jack me know something and how I can not find anything about this. Thanks.
I installed the 12.5 last night, much more reactive and now also seems a bit more stable ...

"I don't give a crap about you having problems"

Yep, that is a model behavior indeed...

That's the result of your behavior. Provoking people into reacting and then say something like this IS trolling behavior. As I said, mods, take note. It's a shame that someone like you who clearly could be an asset and positive part of this community goes on and on in many threads with a destructive tone that provokes conflict and keeps people from having a civilized discussion. Well, you will probably blame that on me now, as you always start out provoking and then blames people for being out of line.

I came in here to discuss v12.5 and I mentioned my experience with Resolve. Getting aggressive against me because of that is your fault and your behavior. I would like to discuss the Resolve improvements, but I guess with you around there won't be any place to discuss Resolve at Reduser without hearing your bullshit over and over.

ProRes continues to be a bitch for the non-Mac world. I'm disappointed that Apple continues to ignore this part of their market and kind of hangs pro users out to dry.

BTW, back to the Resolve topic: it's interesting to note that the BMD banner tells showgoers "Free Download Now!", which tells me that Resolve 12.5 will be out very soon. I'm in the middle of a project and am reluctant to upgrade, but maybe I'll gamble, back up the system, and see how the old version does with a current session. What could happen? :scared:

Some of the new features are tempting. Once it's no longer a beta I'll bite. I think the interesting aspect about the changes to the colour page is that it turns Resolve into more of a online editor than just a colour tool (certainly it'll speed up adding grain and flares for more stylised jobs - if the flares are good, I'm very picky about my flares), especially with the Fusion connect tool allowing graphics and VFX round tripping into the equation as well. They did pretty much exactly what I wanted there (link to Fusion rather than incorporating fusion into Resolve, which would have been a serious mistake IMHO).

ok well .. I have to try these days.
I just have to figure out if this feature still apply for database sharing and discs.
Or are you saying that work without it?
