  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Convince me why my EPIC M costs about 5 times as the Scarlet package

Nope. Alexa produces more film like image like you can see from all the movies. But that's pretty much only better thing in Alexa.

That's right and guess why? Because I'm not a blind fanboy. I will buy EPIC because it's the only camera that shoots over 200fps at this price range. Its smaller form factor is also 1/3 of the factor why I choose it over the Alexa.

so you're buying a 30,000 camera just to shoot nothing but high FPS movies? What kind of work do you do? Let me guess home made skateboard movies with fish eye lenses? lol

Eyes don't lie. That's why many Hollywood directors choose it too over EPIC/Red One too.

You are clearly pretty new to this industry and all the different buttons and features seem to be still unfamiliar. Skateboarding doesn't need more than 60fps.

No one is complaining they made the Scarlet for "too good for too cheap". We just wish we knew how much the Scarlet was going to cost before we bought the Epic. Many people would have made a different decision.

This season of Fringe looks a lot softer than the previous seasons, so I don't agree it looks film-like. I am finding it a lot softer than film, and this is on 720p broadcast.

I am not the original poster, but I will offer my opinion. I own both an EPIC-M and an EPIC-X and I don't have buyer’s remorse for either purchase. I have shot everything 5K FF for 3D, which allows a lot of flexibility for post adjustment. I have only shot HDRx and slow-motion once.

The only thing I would complain about is that Scarlet gets first dibs on the Canon Al mount. :-)
 
Alexa is a great camera.
Epic is a great camera.

Alexa has an edge, albeit slight, in colour representation if you're comparing them both to film. (NOTE: Not the actual image, just the colour.) Epic has the edge in pretty much everything else. Doesn't stop them from both being great cameras.

Stop arguing. Go shoot something.

Right, I'm new yet I own a Red MX and you're shooting skateboarding vids on DSLR LOL
 
Because on a film with two Epics and a Scarlet you would try not to use the Scarlet unless absolutely necessary. Not that it would be a bad thing to shoot an entire movie on Scarlet.

There were people before the announcement who were worried that Scarlet will cost too little because they don't want vimeo and youtube to be filled with Scarlet material. Those guys don't seem to know that currently the best stuff on the net can be seen from these sites and mostly camera used is DSLR. Wouldn't it be better if they shot with Scarlet instead, or were those people complaining insecure because there are 1000 of more talented people with DSLR's out there that when given Scarlet would make the less talented but richer guys material less valuable or without a value at all.

You get to be in the business even if you have no skill if you own good camera (you will be mostly watching other people using it though), but when everyone has the same camera you will have no value anymore.

This. People here are just unable to accept that any feature on any other than RED camera can be better. "Scientology crazy" like Bloom says. It's same with Apple fanatics.

Higher IQ would allow you for more logical thinking and you wouldn't come into that kind of conclusions.

... it seems like, no matter how good a new product is, no matter how much idealism, heart, sleepless nights, money, goodwill, love ... & x ... has been poured in ...

there will be a crowd, a big crowd, that will complain.

this is demotivating, folks!!!

Why is it, that all of this stuff comes out?
Isn´t there anything of value to share, contribute, create and have us all enjoy ... ?

Where are the 0.1% of people, that are excited and focused on the future ...

All this talk of Alexa vs RED - haven't we been here like a millions times before and it always ends the same way, with the thread being shut down.

Alexa has a quality that people like.
RED has a quality that people like.

I like the image that the RED produces. its not film, its not Alexa, its a RED look.

I'm going for RED Epic because I believe for me its the best camera for what I want to do and has the features I think I need. Simple.
