  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Suggestions needed matte box, plates, filters.

Hi everyone,

Currently we have a red one, red bridge plate 19mm, 18-85mm red zoom lense and we have on order the occonor 2575 tripod and appropriate tripod legs.

By tommorrow I need to place an order for a proper matte box (we were thinking of arri mb20) a follow focus (arri ff4 or ff5), a set of filters that will work with all red primes and zoom lenses including the huge red 18-85 lense.

Our biggest concern right now is how to properly attach our red one to the oconnor head, as I said currently we have only the redbridge plate 19mm, do we need anything else. Will the redbridge plate fit with supplied oconnor plate or is there a crucial piece of equipment missing?

Second. The 18-85 zoom is much bigger and longer than we thought it would be, what are the most appropriate rods to fit this lense with a matte box attached to it.

Third. What are the best filters for red out there. We need ND set, a pola filter, and maybe a gradient. What are the size of the filters needed to accomodate all lenses including the red 18-85 zoom.

Thanks for the input.

Just to get you started, you need an Arri compatible dovetail plate to go between the O'Connor head and RED bridge plate. Unless the O'Connor head will come with an Arri compatible dovetail plate, you'll need to chose one of these:

Arri Dovetail 2060/2575 12"
Arri Dovetail 2060 18"
Arri Dovetail 2060 24"

If you already have an Arri dovetail for a different tripod, the O'Connor head should come with its own quick release plate you can attach to that, it just means another piece for some added weight and bulk.

The Arri or Element Technica (or similar from other manufacturers) is what is needed to marry to the bridge from RED. Be sure that you actually have the Hybrid Bridge in 19mm as opposed to the original RED Rails 19mm base (part of the Production Pack) as this is a non-compatible system.

The Arri MB20-II mattebox is an excellent choice that marries perfectly with the RED 18-85. We sell a nice kit for this mattebox. As you mention the lens itself is quite heavy and I would suggest you get a lens support bracket an low support 19mm rod bridge to take the weight off of the lens mount. Optitek and Duclos make lens supports that marry to low supports such as the Arri LS-9.

Abel sells all of this gear as well as filter kits and everything else you could need to fill out your RED One camera kit. Please feel free to contact me directly for further assistance. We have helped hundreds if not thousands of RED owners fill out their kits, and many are not familiar with the options available or recommended for their new gear.
