  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Complexity...

There can't be that many moving parts on EPIC can there? The fans are about the only things with motors moving them, aren't they?

Caps are usually the first things to fail, especially if you don't use the device often.

Right... that's the point I was trying to make... Though, my choice of words might not have been very clear... Was meaning to say "It is moving parts" in general... Not "Its moving parts" as in Epic's... Meaning to say, it doesn't seem like there would be too many moving parts, so we probably don't need to be overwhelmed by the number of parts and boards that Jim mentioned... At least not in that context.

My RED has been the best single investment i have made in this industry ( 25 years ) . Besides it being a creative tool that pays my mortgage and allows me to nappies on my babies bum, it is also the most fun i have had creatively for a long time. Prepping the kit for a shoot is always an exciting time, paid or just for fun with a group of mates, shooting for the day just because we can! The EPIC is a bonus, when it's ready it's ready, simple as that, we all know you will deliver and continue to develop even after we have coughed up our hard earned dough, until then i got my RED, and even when the EPIC is birthed, i will have a real hard time saying goodbye to an old friend.

I'll be sad to trade mine in. Over the years, I've covered it in stickers like the back of a skateboard.

Its not, my understanding is release order has always been, EPIC-X, Scarlet (fixed) and then the rest in undetermined order.
Unless I'm mistaken, originally the 2/3-inch Cinema was supposed to be out before the fixed.

I heard that before... where??

I must say that I was surprised when the the rumor came up that the fixed lens Scarlet would be the first because I thought it would be more time consuming to finish a system that works "out of the box".

Other than that I'm just excited and wondering if I should Ebay my Xl-2...

P.S.: Good morning Jim!

I was thinking that RED was going to release the M-X upgrade for the R1 first, then the Epic-X, then the 2/3i Scarlet (hopefully by Q1 2010). This is of course after QA, beta and tweaking. I expect that R1 owners will get an email notification about the new sensor upgrade option, which, by the number of owners that go for it but more importantly don't, will help RED to gauge the number of those interested in trading-up to the Epic-X. Once that's shipping in significant amounts (READ: at least 100's of units/wk), then I would expect to hear more about the 2/3i Scarlet and it's release date. Because most modules will work across most brains (I say "most" because we don't know a heck of a lot about the modules yet), I would also expect that the early Scarlet buyers (and most others) will be waiting (happily :emote_popcorn:) for module stock (and probably the MRPs) once the Epic-X adopters get all of their freebies. This probably won't affect people who have the Epic-X system, and access to older RED accs, as much. So as a non-owner, I wouldn't expect to have a fully functional 2/3i Scarlet rig (including MRPs) until Spring/Summer 2010 (assuming that once it's available, a shitload of people with deeper pockets than me will buy a shitload of Scarlets ahead of me, although I'm fairly confident saying that the Fixed Scarlet will be the biggest selling unit across the DSMC lines in the first year after it's release, so some may wait for that).

Another thing I keep wondering about is how the hell RED is going to keep up with the production of modules. I mean, I think I remember reading that RED Ranch will also be handling some of the manufacturing of product, but, AFAIK, it'll be a while before it's built and fully operational (up to speed). Which may mean small-scale batch releases of certain mods at certain times.

As always, this is just SPECULATION and everything is SUBJECT TO CHANGE at any time without any notice.

Just wanted to share my thoughts. Hopefully, I am way off base here, and the cams are released by EOY 2009, with enough modules to go around for everybody and the MRPs are released at the same time as the 2/3i Scarlet (or shortly thereafter... $$ reservations?) and the Fixed Scarlet sells as many units as there productions in NY/LA... ok, got caught up in the dream there for a sec. I'm back now. :)

EDIT: Scratch that. Just read Jim's post. Now I don't know what to think. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Unless something has changed, the sensor block is supposed to have [motorized?] flange focal depth adjustment.

Hi Brook,

I too am interested to see how works in the real world, I miss shims myself.

Just guessing, but it would make sense to deliver a S35 Scarlet first as the sensor is related to the Epic X, followed by a 2/3 brain. Adding a lens means more issues to iron out.

How has the Sony F35 implementation of a moving sensor block held up in real world usage?

No Idea, did not know it had one. Sony B4 mounts were generally thermally unstable. What can you tell me?

No idea; it was an open question, following on from yours.

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

I dreamt about Epic and Jim messing with mounts.

I must be anxious...

Hmm

Hmm

I'll be curious to see when the release dates will be for the Scarlet models, because at this point I'd just be excited for any of them to come out. Epic is out of the question price-range wise for me at this time, but I want to pick up the 5K Scarlet and fixed lens Scarlet so I'm definitely drooling over the prospects.

I guess in some ways the fixed lens would be more immediately useful to me, for corporate work, because I'm not shooting Web videos with a 5K camera and a set of primes, no way, lol. I'll save that setup for my first feature and other higher end work.

Understood. My comment was a response to Sami S's statement that "release order has always been, EPIC-X, Scarlet (fixed)," which is inaccurate as phrased. Given that, as Stephen Williams noted above, a lens only adds complexity to development, it is curious that the fixed is now scheduled to be released before the Cinema.
