  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Complexity...

Oh, man that is something... I have friend who do not want to know how complex is the car he is driving because he would loose his confidence in it... He believes that all complex things are prone to broke down or not to work at all...

They must hate flying - there's six million parts in a Boeing 747, half of which are bolts, rivets and fasteners to keep everything held together!

Yea Jim, that's all fine and dandy... but will the new Epic cameras have an option to shoot in H.264 ?????????? It's either that or nothing for me..

You seem to have missed a </sarcasm> tag there...

We are confident that EPIC will be a vast improvement in every area. We have learned a lot since building our 1st camera. We definitely are excited to present a bulletproof tank that takes incredible images week after week... year after year. Believe it or not, we are a different group than two years ago. Lots more experience and knowledgeable.

We really can't wait to put this baby together.

Given the circumstances of where you guys were coming from with the first camera, basically going for the fences with a small, smart team it's quite amazing how successful the R1 really is. With two years under your belt, I would expect we're going to see huge improvement in a lot of areas and I have big expectations for the new cameras.

Looking forward to seeing the unveiling of Epic in the near future. I can sense you can barely contain the excitement and enthusiasm of what you guys have achieved with this one which is of course rubbing off on all of us.

As always, thanks for coming on here and keeping us in the loop.

yep take your time...
not just in building it, maybe also the postworkflow of 5k files (sounds good to me)...great would be all in one day...epics going out the door, fcs/adobe update same day. and the modules...they should be bullet proof too.

i have now a good cam i am sure of will not die the next 8-12 months.

BOTTOM LINE- early believers are safe. I don't care if Epic-X happens in 2 weeks or 2 years. I know Red has my back. I can only hope they are getting more supporters than detractors at this point.

Step up folks. Now's the time....

I think it's moving parts that are going to be far more prone to failure

There can't be that many moving parts on EPIC can there? The fans are about the only things with motors moving them, aren't they?

I wonder how many of those 10,000 parts are capacitors.

Caps are usually the first things to fail, especially if you don't use the device often.

We really can't wait to put this baby together.

You make it sound as if this was just as easy as making babies :blushing: Probably just as much fun. I'm sure there was incredible amount of effort and dedication from everyone in the team to achieve what you achieved already. Well done to everyone in the team.

Caps are usually the first things to fail, especially if you don't use the device often.

That has been true with electrolytic caps in years past, and ceramic caps will crack and fail under mechanical stress (normally during assembly, not as much once a unit is assembled). But now there are a lot of high-quality cap choices, and even the electrolytics made now are (I believe) not as failure-prone as the earlier designs.

Now that the R1 has been out for a while, I think their team should have a pretty good idea about what works in the field and what doesn't, at least on the time scale of a few years.

I have been on the sidelines for last couple years. I have not been fortunate enough to pull the trigger on purchasing a RED1. It's has been a fun ride watching Jim change the rules of the game. Congrats RED team on making cinema history, again! Hopefully sooner than later I will be apart of this special group of owners.

Jim - Why Scarlet is delayed for Epic?

Take your time, get it right....revolutions take blood, sweat, time, money, planning and expertise!

I will be working with my Red until the new kids get released!!

Thanks for the update!!

Dave

For those of you that can't quite comprehend the complexity of what we are trying to do...

Building the best camera in the world, at any price point, can't be easy...this looks like it will truly integrate every possible option, no compromises, not on weight, not on start-up, ease of 3D use, it will have everything.

Will reduser fall silent, because there will be nothing left to discuss??

Let the genie out of the bottle.

For those of you that can't quite comprehend the complexity of what we are trying to do... consider that there are 70 boards and 11,000 pieces on an EPIC-X (with modules).

When I read that I immediately thought of the scene in Apollo 13 where the engineer says "We've gotta make this, fit the hole for this, using nothing but that."

I'd imagine that the coffee vendor for the RED lab is getting rich about now...

I can't wait to see how this all turns out! :emote_popcorn:

I think Epic-X and Scarlet Fixed come out together.

Who knows what the landscape is now (except for RED, of course)... But, I thought the release dates put the S35 Scarlet as the first Scarlet out of the gate, if memory serves. And, since it and Epic X use the same 5k MysteriumX sensor (to my knowledge), that would seem logical...

But, who knows.

later,
Jason
