  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Competition to guess Scarlet's features and price-tag!!! (FREE post for indi short!)

Once again for the likes of Boz and Impagliazzo:

They may be many similar threads with people guessing what Scarlet is going to be and how much is going to cost, however this one is a:

Competition to win FREE POSTPRODUCTION for an indie short!
We are talking here a value in excess of $ 15000,- USD!!!

No cookies here, but while You are doing Your post at our facilities we will for sure offer You some along with some great Mexican Coffee...

Features:
1. A power button
2. A record button
3. Built-in light metering
4. Records 24p video
5. Records sound

:bleh: Seriously though you might want to tighten the rules up a bit somehow. Here are my real guesses:

1. 2k
2. Fixed lens
3. RAW shooting
4. No variable frame rates
5. Small flip-out LCD
Price: $3500

Power or record button are not exactly a features, but Your point is well taken.
I believe we are all here mature adults (most of us anyway) and we know we are talking about "main" features, nevertheless I am going to "edit" the main post accordingly. Thanks for pointing it out...

This is my opinion:

- 2k
- very large LCD
- PL mount
- 2 XLR connections
- Red Raw
- Coffee Machine RED© included
- Color kaleidoscope with fake snow flakes

1. Built-in Nikon Mount
2. Autofocus with Nikon lenses -- push button high-speed focus
3. Manual zoom with Nikon lenses
4. CF card
5. 1080p
Icing: Wireless focus pull (ie Arri). Think about it: the high speed motors in the Nikons (and Sigma, etc) focus faster (and more accurately) than the most nimble-fingered puller. Why have mechanical focus when some of the best lenses in the world already offer god's gift to focusing?

If Scarlet were simply a Nikon D40 with a 1080p cmos and variable frame rates it would absolutely kill. DOF? All APS-C (1.5x/1.6x crop) sensors have excellent DOF -- just crank the frame rates and it pulls vid with Nikon pro-level quality.

Really, Sony and Canon should also come out with cams like this. $4999 sans glass and it'd murder everything else on the market. Hell, $9999 for a variable frame rate Nikon? Sign me up.

1.fixed lens
2.shoots to SDHC
3.Raw
4.attached LCD or OLED screen
5.variable frame rates

Price: Less than $3000 (let's face it, anything pocket sized is going to be hell to stabilize so they're probably trying to take on a different corner of the market)

A) Please be specific about the price-tag (read the main post)

B) Regarding stabilization, I know heavier normally is better, but there are some instances where smaller is easier to stabilize. We have, on our last heli-shoot, tried to see how would HV20 behave stabilized by two Kenyon Gyros and a Glidecam customized system. The footage was very impressive (of course not counting HDV format). We have tried similar setup to shoot out of moving vehicles with the same impressive results. This is where "pocket sized" Scarlet will deliver miracles...

Okay, after reading every body else's thoughts, I'll mix it up. Here goes:

1. 2K
2. CF Recording
3. DSLR body (either Nikon D300-size or maybe even thin film body frame with a large LCD built in to the back with an interchangeable mount, starting with PL)
4. Variable Frame Rates 1-60
5. 2x XLR with HDMI out as only outputs
Price: $1,800

...(yeah, I said $1,800)

1. s16 sensor that captures 2k RAWcode at 24p to 60p
2. Records to Cf cards as well as optional external hard drive
3. Optional nikon or canon mounts
4. Flip out lcd, no viewfinder
5. $4,500

Rob, I have never said the RED employees can't enter, however I believe that Your entry will instantly end the competition according to the rules - unless of course You really don't know anything about Scarlet ;o)

1. 2k Raw Redcode
2. Fixed Lens
3. 24fps
4. 24bit audio
5. works with red cine and uses R3D

OK, I'll play...

1> 2K~2.4K, 2/3" to s16mm CMOS.

2> Modular Record Options, CF to start, 1.8" SSD and ExpressCard planned.

3> 1 to 120fps REDCODE RAW on-board.

4> Modular hand-held system and mounts. Hold it like a DLSR or a compact camcorder. Or configure and hold with a pistol grip, shoot from the hip, mount to a car, surf-board or helmet.

5> Unique lens system, no over-sized 35mm mounts for this "pocket cam". I see interchangeable zoom lenses via 3 or 4 available lens packs or modules. Perhaps it comes standard with a 10:1 zoom, but there's an option for a wide-angle module, another option for a 15-50X zoom, etc..

I'm not sure I like the number of digits after that dollar sign

at 2,000 jim would be doing it at a loss

Why do you think Jim named the company Red? Because it operates in the red.

Oakley looks like it is doing well. Jim Jannard is a billionaire. If he wants to sell at low or even negative margins to help independent artists better record their vision, who's going to stop him?

Sorry, but as nice and awesome as Jim Jannard is, he's a business man and is looking to make a profit for RED. No company is just gonna make cameras at a loss so people can enjoy them.

I don't have a bad attitude, please serve me!

At the current rate dollar is devaluating buy the time Scarlet is going to be available the number of digits is about right...

...just kidding - I hope they start selling it at the show...
