Not sure why so many people are suddenly asking me if they can get a sneak peak of VV Helium at Cinegear.

First of all.. there is no such thing as a Helium VV. Second.. In case nobody noticed, I kinda stopped giving a shit about trade shows a few years ago.

I'm sure there are all sorts of data and charts and return on investment studies that show just how great trade shows are for companies... but for me, and for RED, the moment we stopped planning our life around trade shows a few years ago suddenly we seemed to have much more time to actually get our shit together.. and we have become a better company because of it.

Just for example.. NAB.

Every year for at least 2 months before NAB we would be completely consumed making flashy prototypes and marketing materials and films and fancy booths to show things that usually were not ready, but we would push and push for no other reason rather than it was just expected... meanwhile customers and their projects big and small that we were supporting during NAB would always suffer, and then on top of that it would take at least a month of recovery after NAB for us to get our heads back into the game. So that is more than 3 months out of the year that just gets vampired away for really, at the end of the day, no good reason. Trade shows do not make what we are making any better, and trade shows do not make what you all are shooting any better.

It was great this year not having a booth at NAB. Instead of planning a bunch of grand theatrics for a big booth and announcing a bunch of stuff in the future, we got to instead focus on catching up with our debilitating list of backorders and put any remaining effort into keeping our engineers heads down engineering.

Cinegear we will have a booth.. but it is going to be just for fun. Cinegear I feel is a much more focused show for Film than NAB... and it's easy for us because it's literally across the street. Not a lot of collateral damage for us attending that show.

And yes.. we do have some incredibly great stuff coming for existing DSMC2 customers down the road to continue to make your cameras even better... but we are not going to announce them just for the sake of announcing them because It's NAB time or Cinegear time or IBC time or whatever time. We will announce them when we announce them because it's ready time.

O... Trade shows are good for something.... as a social event. They bring friends and family together like nothing else. And we appreciate them for that.. for allowing us to see our customers face to face that we normally never would have the opportunity doing so. So before the Trade Show gods strike me down with lightning, cheers to them for that.

Just wanted to clear that up.

A good move. The next step will be to announce products when they're in stock in good quantities ;)

Way to go Jarred !

Good move.

Although I miss the old days, when Jim and you announced new things on reduser :-)

Understood and agreed with on all fronts. But... a vista vision Helium sensor would be pretty amazing!

Cinegear is nice and compact. It is a specialized group of people focused on shooting. They also have Korean BBQ tacos. :)

For me, trade shows are for exactly what you describe, seeing your friends. Thank you for hosting the Red party at NAB. It was nice to see so many friends gathered in one place. The only down side was how loud the music was, which made talking difficult.

At this stage of the RED revolution, it's hard to argue for putting extensive resources into trade shows. That said, from the first tent in 2006 until at least 2011, I would argue that RED gained a great deal from exhibiting at NAB. Looking forward to seeing peeps at CineGear - oh, and I hope that private showing of the Helium VV is still on... hehe

Cheers - #19

I'm super excited about Cine Gear, in some ways more than NAB for reasons Jarred's outlined. It's so production oriented and you end up bumping into so many great people.

That said, I think while at NAB I was asked and/or told "well it's not as exciting without RED here" about 50 times during the show.

I more or less said, look around and explained the game plan. The cameras were everywhere and RED peeps were at a bit over a handful of booths showing off the current tech and helping out as necessary. It wasn't a dedicated space, but more like an infiltration, which worked well. Particularly the guy who bought the brand spanking new Scarlet-W from MAXX Digital right on the show floor and left with the camera that day. That was awesome to witness.

I'll be at Cine Gear, I think both of my cameras will be too and perhaps some footage :)

i'm excited to attend CineGear,, get to hang with some
great friends.
Tim Duast from Atlanta,, My Buddy Cong He,, Pedro from Cinemilled,
and everyone else. Excited!

I'll be around the Vaxis booth mostly.

Knowing that RED was shifting their focus makes a lot of sense and I applaud their decision.

I was all set for Cinegear this year - had the dates locked in to my calendar since last November. Even planned on extending the time to enjoy the west coast I love so much.
Unfortunate change of plans due to an unexpected series of medical events.

To all that can and will attend - have great time.

Cheers!

Definitely have to love that attitude... even BMD's finally adopting it. ;)

Unexpected upgrades are great, but I'm really enjoying my DSMC2... and so are the folks I've been shooting stuff for.

If you'd had a booth I probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to meet you in person at NAB.

I'm hoping to make it to Cinegear this year, but my film production schedule might get in the way :-/

Jarred has an entertaining way of putting things in perspective. Love it!

Btw, may I ask why do you guys have "NAB 2016" section on the forum? It shows there are Threads: 12 and Replies: 751.

May I humbly request to move that (NAB 2016) item towards the bottom of the forums page and replace the area under "Recon" with a "Helium" forum please? Since you have DRAGON, WEAPON and even a RAVEN forum, wouldn't it be nice to add HELIUM to add the new sensor technology to the forum?
