Not sure why so many people are suddenly asking me if they can get a sneak peak of VV Helium at Cinegear.
First of all.. there is no such thing as a Helium VV. Second.. In case nobody noticed, I kinda stopped giving a shit about trade shows a few years ago.
I'm sure there are all sorts of data and charts and return on investment studies that show just how great trade shows are for companies... but for me, and for RED, the moment we stopped planning our life around trade shows a few years ago suddenly we seemed to have much more time to actually get our shit together.. and we have become a better company because of it.
Just for example.. NAB.
Every year for at least 2 months before NAB we would be completely consumed making flashy prototypes and marketing materials and films and fancy booths to show things that usually were not ready, but we would push and push for no other reason rather than it was just expected... meanwhile customers and their projects big and small that we were supporting during NAB would always suffer, and then on top of that it would take at least a month of recovery after NAB for us to get our heads back into the game. So that is more than 3 months out of the year that just gets vampired away for really, at the end of the day, no good reason. Trade shows do not make what we are making any better, and trade shows do not make what you all are shooting any better.
It was great this year not having a booth at NAB. Instead of planning a bunch of grand theatrics for a big booth and announcing a bunch of stuff in the future, we got to instead focus on catching up with our debilitating list of backorders and put any remaining effort into keeping our engineers heads down engineering.
Cinegear we will have a booth.. but it is going to be just for fun. Cinegear I feel is a much more focused show for Film than NAB... and it's easy for us because it's literally across the street. Not a lot of collateral damage for us attending that show.
And yes.. we do have some incredibly great stuff coming for existing DSMC2 customers down the road to continue to make your cameras even better... but we are not going to announce them just for the sake of announcing them because It's NAB time or Cinegear time or IBC time or whatever time. We will announce them when we announce them because it's ready time.
O... Trade shows are good for something.... as a social event. They bring friends and family together like nothing else. And we appreciate them for that.. for allowing us to see our customers face to face that we normally never would have the opportunity doing so. So before the Trade Show gods strike me down with lightning, cheers to them for that.
Just wanted to clear that up.
