  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cheapest tripod for RED Epic

Another vote for the 509HD. People still live in the past and think Manfrotto = Photography only. Their new bridging tech with continuous fluid drag system and fine controls are IMHO the best value for money. The 509HD handled for me extremely well even RED ONE fully kitted with the 300mm prime, or the 18-85 RPZ (which would be as big as it gets for the setups you mention). Once I have switched to using Epic / Scarlet - the 509HD actually at times seems little overkill....

My 2 yen

EI stands for E-Image a company based in Ningbo China. I bought my first tripod from them when I got my Red One in 2009. They are excellent value.

I got a heavy duty head, heavy duty studio tripod on wheels and with gas-lift centre, a normal full height, a short and a high hat - all for just over$2,000. Takes the weight of the Red One with 18-85 lens and full kit. So very good value but not the same as Ronford Baker which I have since bought. Of course that is fantastic, solid and smooth - but but nearly 5 times the price just for one set of legs and head.

I use the Ronford when I want rock solid legs and super-smooth action, but I still use the E-Image kit a lot. At that price-point very good indeed.

I just went through this process and feel lucky to have found an Miller Arrow 25 and sticks for $1900 used on eBay. This tripod's no joke and will work perfectly with my EPIC rig.

What is the main diff between the Arrow and the Compass?

I am looking at the Compass 25.

The only two differences I could find between the Arrow and the Compass are that the controls on the Arrow are on the back and another was that I read on review that said that the jump in resistance between 1 and 2 on the Compass was too much compared to the Arrow.

Thanks! Since I have no experience with both, the deal I got today with the Compass 25 will suffice :)

I tried them at NAB and really liked them a lot. Just got a nice detailed response from Steve Gibby about the differences between the compass and arrow. I'll ask him first before sharing his thoughts.

BTW, the price on BH went back up??? Glad we got our orders in!

Gaahhh... I was looking at the 509HD as per Phil's recommendation (~$1500 with carbon fibre sticks?)

How much was the Miller on sale?

Gotta say with that Miller price being so low it looks like a great option.

I just grabbed an OConnor 1030D (not cheap), but I'll still be using my bruised and beaten up Manfrotto 509HD for a long time to come. Especially those 536 legs. I'm surprised how much I've use their 7 foot reach. It's bizarre having access to that maximum and minimum height within one set of legs. It's been a while since I've even need the hi-hat with that around.

Just the head was on sale for $612 less.
