  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Carbon Weapon Upgrade/New Order Update -

Guys, re-read Jarred's posts. Everyone with an existing order for NEW forged or woven carbon fiber WEAPONS, you should be getting / should have gotten notice that we are ready to allocate a camera to your order. EDIT: Last email went out about 15 min ago...

If you have an upgrade, we have notified a lot of folk to send in their camera for upgrade (forged and woven). But, it is dependent on their schedules to get them to us. So, we have to wait awhile before we can go to next person in upgrade line. And, if suddenly, everyone is going to use holidays to send in their cameras for upgrade (if they have been notified), we are going to be slammed, especially since we will be closed from Dec 24 until Jan 4.
(Full disclosure statement: I am in line for a new Carbon Fiber Woven. '-)

DONE!

This evening with all that is going on on REDuser, the old Fats Waller refrain "This joint is jumpin'... it's really jumping...Come in, cats, and check your hats
I mean this joint is jumpin'"
keeps running through my head

So any chance of epic x to woven CF weapon upgrades starting before the holiday?

Congrats, were you upgrading from carbon or m?

This makes no sense to me, what I think I am hearing you say is that people that ordered at NAB are now placed behind new orders. I have been in touch with my bomb squad and he hasn't received the go ahead for me to send in the camera. Where this is driving me crazy is first the forge guys jumped ahead in line, now it's new camera's that jumped ahead in line ... all with people that ordered upgrade in the early mourning of NAB. Also if you guys are still on CF to woven upgrades, I just wonder how many of those there are, it doesn't make any sense to me that RED is like 3 months late in processing cameras for the camera's that we were able to buy via the website at NAB. I really wasn't expecting 8k this year, I view that as rocket science with a lot of testing, but I was expecting the 6k woven weapon order this year - I must have completly miss read everything you guys said on deliverying weapon this year for those that upgraded at NAB.

Good...I think the upgrade system should be done away with. It's generous, it's nice...but if it gets in the way of you guys innovating and innovating NOW...I vote for doing away with it, paying a little more, and seeing you guys go as fast/crazy as you can.

Kinda sounds like what they did with the Scarlet W. No upgrades, just timestamp.

But the problem with that in the Weapon line is that people paid extra money for their Epic Dragons (M's, CF's) to be in line for the next upgrade. A promise that has to be kept.

Patrick, are you suggesting we have our production team twiddle their thumbs while they wait for cameras to come in to be upgraded? Or that we don't give people some time to reply to the upgrade notice to send in their camera? Or that we blast too many upgrades, so too many people could all decide to send in a month's worth of upgrades in one week, and we come apart at the seams?

This is simply saying, while we wait, more new ones will be made. No one is "placed behind".

If I have said it once, I have said it 1000 times. There is a reason no one else does upgrades. It is a pain to do on so many levels. But the journey is worth the destination in the end. You don't have to buy a whole new camera as technology evolves. If this is unfair, I don't know what is fair.

Yes, according to Jarred and Brent, they are working their way through the M' and CF upgrades before starting on the Epic X Dragon upgrades.

I was just saying that they can't do away with the upgrade programs for Weapon's in the future because what variety you purchase will determine your upgrade path in the future.

To use Patrick's situation as an example, imagine the anger if a CF Dragon owner learned that an Epic X Dragon owner was being served ahead of him or her?

When do you anticipate reaching epic dragon X upgrades who are going cf? When do you anticipate finishing all cf weapon upgrades? When do you think 8k nab orders may be filled? I'm just wondering cuz I'm an epic X owner, appreciate even ballpark idea thanks so much! Ps the upgrade program is amazing please don't listen to Luke

Why is it amazing? How about letting them build up stock and just pre ordering or buying new? I have done that with every single RED of mine and have loved it. In the end, if you just sell the camera 3rd party instead of upgrading you will save about the same amount...so really what is the difference?

Why dont you sell it and order a new weapon then?

it makes it affordable and only have to deal with red. No one would do a mag trade program but red. I like their system, I get where you are coming from but I'd rather not deal with third parties or unpredictable second hand market pricing. It's kind of neat to go up so many generations with mostly same accessories I like their system opposed to others like Arri where I can't upgrade/trade in

edit

i like that my red can easily be contemporary and renting forever as one unit vs buying and selling Arri after Arri over and over with no bottom on used prices. I figured I'd save my first Arri as personal cameras when it's done rental rotation til next generation replaces it. But after that I'm stuck reselling forever and kind of sucks I prefer reds pricing and green concept

All goes back to how quickly people get in their cameras for upgrade ahead of you. If high take rate early, you wait longer. If low, then sooner. That is what makes these programs so hard to predict, we are not the only ones in control of schedule, it is the folks upgrading. There will be peaks and valleys in upgrade influx.

I am sure there are far more people thankful that there is an evergreening (ever'redding?) process in existence - than there are that would rather buy everything new each time.

Perhaps all that is needed is an order status page when someone logs into their Red Account that gives an approximate range of dates before they will be asked to send their camera in for upgrades:

Eg:
+) Expect to send your camera in to Red in 5 - 8 weeks.
+) Expect to send your camera in to Red in 4 - 7 weeks.
+) Expect to send your camera in to Red in 3 - 5 weeks.
+) Expect to send your camera in to Red in 2 - 4 weeks.
+) Expect to send your camera in to Red in 1 - 2 weeks.
+) Expect to send your camera in to Red in 1 week.

This may even replace the 'information vacuum induced stir-craziness' with a (more positive) sense of anticipation.

Interesting idea that might take a lot of work to maintain. The problem that could arise would be if someone based a work schedule on those loose numbers and due to a group withholding sending theirs in when due caused an earlier (or later date when that grouping sent theirs in all at once) opening for the camera to be sent in.

I don't know what the best practice would be but as wonderful a life as Brent and Jarred have, I wouldn't want to be either one of them during upgrade-time.
