  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon SUMIRE PL Lenses

I welcome any lens, good or bad, into the large sensor glass mix :)

There are a few really great shots Freek did in the Canon Sumire sample movie released today , which just happened to be shot on RED MONSTRO ;)

I do like the look these sumires give, but I am with you all, I do not understand the price nor the lack of lens data.

Everyone knows I love EF mount. And I Love the new R mount even more.. Canon did some really cool things there. These seem to go against that work.

I mean its easy with filtration to make anything bloom, why not just let the user choose how that happens when wide open. I just dont understand. Now those new Tokina One's that just came out are making me drool. Trying to convince ryan to let me get my hands on a set.

Is it possible to get the RF mount on dsmc? Or will it not work out???

Such a lens BS- unbelievable. And you guys are buying this??!!!. After all this time? another unbelievable.....but true , what a gullible bunch ;-) I guess people are begging for modern K35 so what is Canon to do? Yes, sure, we'll tell you want you want to believe, why not?

From what I understand Canon's new optical R&D efforts are pretty much all aimed at R mount, specifically relating to stills glass, which will likely trickle into cinema glass somehow.

I'm with all of you regarding the Sumires, but they are indeed answering one request from filmmakers regarding a slightly more vintage feel. I agree the effort is a strange one however. Not nearly as weird as launching cinema cameras and lenses that featured PL mounts, then not actually having those mounts on the primes, but I guess everybody has gotten that memo now.

RF mount would require sensor to be moved closer to the front of the camera body, so.... for DSMC2 or DSMC1.... zero chance. Need a RED body redesign.
I thought the mount could be placed closer to the sensor, but maybe this is not possible

As someone with a set of the 'original' CN-E primes all I really wanted was user swappable EF/PL versions. And a lot of people just wanted PL versions. Canon could have really cleaned up if they had released the originals in both EF and PL from the beginning. The Sumire's are literally double the price of the EF's(~$52K for a set of Sumire's vs. less than $26K for the originals), they're softer and less contrasty(I've always liked the look of the original primes and think they make people look good), focus roll-off is very steep(I've been told it's like falling off a cliff) and there is no data(just a "dumb" PL mount). Now I haven't seen the lenses in person, but I'm not feeling it for them. The next one on my list is probably the Sigma 105 T1.5. I've demo'd it and it's beautiful. It also intercuts with my original CN-E's, no problem.

Really odd choices. I think i read they were basically double the price as well. There's nothing in them that would draw me to them unlike some of the other newer offering which visibly look great. Crazy. They look like every other lens from 10+ years ago...

cheers
Paul

They did not come out with PL versions right away because they hoped/pushed for EF mount to become cine standard based on the success of the 5D2 back in 2008. But they did not really follow through with their promised drive by wire focus protocols in their SDK. They just omitted it. I think that would improve EF mount chances to become the standard but oh well.... These lenses are their own admission to a failure of that attempt. On one hand you can't blame them for trying but on the other can't help thinking how stupid, arrogant and short-sighted that was. Being a dumb mount I wonder if they just paid Duclos and took their design. They have an army of engineers so that would be another stupid move if they did it. Oh and I think that the final nail in the "Cine Standard EF" coffin is their own EF-R mount. EF-R lenses are another big mistake IMO: They have enormous experience with retrofocal lenses and now they are scrapping all that for short back focus optics. Why not use that retrofocus experience and build a custm fitted speed booster to make the lenses even more versatile, wider and faster?... Oh Japan, Inc. some things they will never learn.....

Not sure what will happen a decade from now, but I think Canon will still release some new zoom EF lenses, e.g. 24-70mm 2.8 IS, and it looks like there are several primes in the works

There was also another patent for an EOS M speedbooster back in December, so maybe the R system will follow after its tested on the M, and eventually you should be able to choose whatever lens design fits your needs. Maybe its hopeful thinking, but they could end up doing what you're proposing.

First Look: Canon Sumire PL Prime Lenses

By AbelCine

Canon announced their new Sumire Cinema Prime lenses today. This new set of full frame PL-mount lenses builds on their popular Cinema Primes, which are exclusively in EF mount.

Watch the video above to learn more about these new lenses, and see some examples of how they perform in different scenarios. To read the full post visit our blog: abelcine.com/articles/blog-and-knowledge/tech-news/at-the-bench-canon-sumire-pl-prime-lenses

I've shot with Sumire Primes prototypes. They are, in fact, very different to the regular CN-E Primes. In a way they behave like Zeiss Super Speeds I own and shot many projects with. The similarity is how they change perceived (and somewhat measured) sharpness when stopping down the iris. The difference is that they are very, very, sharp at T 2.8-T4.0. Matt Duclos draws the same conclusion.

So, yes, they are 'flawed' when you are looking for an alternative to Zeiss Master Primes. And yes, despite their 'flaw' they resolve more detail than vintage glass.

Bokeh is uniquely showing plenty of cat-eye and oval shapes. Flares are nicely shaped and not prone to overly flaring in high contrast environments.

----

PL mount is cine land, full stop. Canon missed that half a decade ago and adjust now. Price point may be a little over the top. But rental houses will love them: well build and an interesting variation for their customers.

I would gladly shoot anytime again with them. There are many other primes out there with less personality, charisma and less efficiency.
