  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro Announced at WWDC! - It's OFFICIAL!

Anyone notice Apple snapped a close up of Steve Wozniak during the reveal of the PCI memory? Do you think that was a hint that this thing is packing Fusion-IO boards or could that have been a slight rib?

They also showed an unhappy guy wearing a Skype T-Shirt when the announced that FaceTime now allows audio-only calls over WiFi. I'm pretty sure whoever was directing the feed today was having some fun a few times.

What sort of speeds do you have right now?

Typically hover around 1650 write x 850 read. And that's with non-SSDs inside.

That's pretty funny. I liked the dig on Internet Explorer shortly followed by "Siri powered with Bing!" And think of all of those poor flashlight app developers...

OTOH, when it comes to expansion slots, the only card I want to use that can't be served by Thunderbolt is the Rocket-X. I think I'll just keep the Rocket X in a PC then

Even though it is possible to create scenarios where TB2 is bottle neck for a RRX... in my every day world I am not sure.

If I am just processing lots of footage (probably for editorial) with a RRx then I'll probably be scaleing on the card to HD so.... Out to card is probably not ever greater then 400MB/s and what comes back just less than 1000MB/s.

As long as the RRx doesn't have to share a buss what are the scenarios where the RRX is too limited to be useful on TB 2?

If I am processing faster then RT I will be wanting editorial (HD) and if bigger then HD I will probably be wanting exactly RT.

Kind Regards

Michael L

I may have this wrong but can't TB 2 get close to this?

TB2 can do this just fine. However, he would have to put his RAID controller(s) into expansion chassis and hook them up. Just more hardware and things in a long chain of devices that can break.

One potential issue I see coming up is there not being TB2 expansion boxes on the market in time for the Mac Pro launch...

pretty sure no one has a red rocket-x yet, so it is quite possible that before the current (NAB) design is pumped out in quantity, they will change it, now that this thing has been announced. just saying.

I sincerely feel the lack of a lava lamp on top makes the new Mac Pro unusable.

At least for my needs.

I'd love to see a Rocket designed to not be a PCIe form factor unit left for us to put in our own box, but a nice external box/ unit itself with dual TB2 connectors.... Just thinking out loud here.

...I wonder how long it will be before the Star Wars R2 unit decal sets for the Mac Pro hit the market?

No. Thunderbolt RAIDs real-world cap out at around 550 read and 450 write and that's with SSD's. Keep in mind, the test I posted is with HDD's. Drop SSD's into an SAS RAID 50 array and these marks go way up.

Even at twice the speed, TB2 won't be near close enough to warrant the extra hassle and hardware chains.

Last I checked CUDA acceleration was not possible over thunderbolt. That was about 6 months ago when I spoke with a TB Engineer. It may be different now with TB2

BlackMagic down. Now if Adobe says something similar, the "NVidia or Bust" mentality can entirely melt away and we'll just be left with the merits or lack-thereof of the formfactor and design decisions.

Does it really matter with what Adobe have done recently and the upcoming Resolve 10's edit capabilities?
Screw Adobe.

I'm excited by this new box.

Seeing that O2; Oh, I'm just recovering 2 Indys and 1 Octane I found in the company basement :D
Great systems for the time -> very modular, incredible for Video I/O, and still running after 10-20 years (one of the Indys has a graphics chip from 1988 - and still runs smooth!)… Great to play around with this stuff :)

Anyways, just to mirror my answer from the closed thread;
it (the new Mac Pro) reminds me a lot of a mixture or merger of the old "lamp-iMac" base and the Cube design… :)

only fear i have now; hard to tell apart from a flower vase - I hope it's waterproof with the top-hole, otherwise I'm better off locking it away from locations where the secretary and the cleaning lady have access to ;)
