  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D looks quite Nice

It's not just shot badly. I took the clip to After Effects and raised gamma just a bit. Look at what the codec is doing in the circled area:

I guess it got compressed a second time for the web. But the clip cleary shows that the DR of this camera is far from stunning. The tunnel is black, the shadows carry hadly information and the keylight is pretty overexposed. The only excuse for this shot is bad colour correction - doubtful though.

I've never been a HDV friend and the new breed of video DSLR don't do it much better. They pretend to be "cinematic" (what ever that is) with their shallow DOF but never perform to the expectations. Not better than a HDV with a P&S adaptor. Not an option for me.

I am looking forward to seeing what RED do with the scarlet, I am sure it is going to be awesome.

But I like options and in the right hands and for the right project I think the 7D is awesome and I for one am happy it is not a FF sensor.

Would love to Panavise one and shoot Anamorphic.

Same type of bad video came from the 5d before it was released. Then people found out that you could adjust contrast curves to eliminate a lot of the 'crushed' low DR look. I'm expecting the same with this camera once it's released.

Ditto. Not a replacement for my Scarlet to come by any means. But a viable interim setup. and for 1,700!

This is just wrong. First of all, the APS-C 1.6 crop size sensor is almost identical to RED/S35 so it's like shooting 4k with the RED. Second, their are numerous super wides available for the APS-C/EF-S sensor. Canon has had the 10-22 for several years as has Tokina with the 11-16 f2.8 , and Sigma has a 10-20 f3.5. These are all very good rectilinear lenses. There are also even wider fisheyes available from Sigma - a 4.5mm 180 degree circular fisheye on APS-c and a 10mm 167 degree fisheye that fills the APS-C sensor.

What more could you need?

Well that's what I get when I listen to a sales guy at my local camera store...
Sorry to spout false info. Thanks for the Correction.

do I have a 5dmkII? Yes

do I enjoy shooting video with it? Yes, even though it is primarily used for photos.

do I want a 7d? No

do I still want a scarlet? Yes

do I want that scarlet to shoot stills? No

will I spend 7k on a scarlet that has a sensor the same size as the 7d? No

will I spend 5k on a FF scarlet? Yes

could I learn a lot shooting with a canon while waiting on the scarlet? Certainly

I think I will preface this comment with this. I actually am quite a bit of a RED fan. I love working with RED 1(don't own one) but I am frothing at the prospect of getting my scarlet. That said...

A lot of people are saying that the 7D won't affect the Scarlet sales. I don't see how it can not at least affect the Scarlet 2/3" sub $3700 market. 7D has bigger sensor, more pixels, interchangeable lenses and is half the price. Scarlet has better codec, fixed lens, smaller sensor but more modular form factor. On another note; Could you not take the HDMI out of a 7D and into another recording device with a better codec? As long as the HDMI signal is pre-compression.

Regardless of the h.264 acquisition codec, it's amazing value at $1700.

Sure, if the HDMI tap is uncompressed or without frame lines/camera info (which I kinda doubt) you could record it to a better codec...

But even with a better codec, you're still going to have the line skipping that results in really aliased footage. Anything RED releases is going to give the best debayer/downsampling algorithms.

Another thing to consider is that the sub $4000 market is heavily influenced by price, otherwise we wouldn't be in the sub $4000 market.

I really think the Canon 7D if it is similar to the 5D will take alot of market share from the bottom end scarlet. I would think at least 40%. Great lenses, much cheaper, faster workflow, Red One DOF, Super 35mm size sensor, first to market, now other DSLR's will add those features, and it is a DSLR!

I wanted to wait for a scarlet but I bought a Canon 7D. I can't see myself spending 4K now for an entry level scarlet. For lower end music videos, commercials, movies, photoshoots, even some documentaries this camera will be a workhorse!

I honestly think Red will not release a 2/3 chip scarlet.

Got to agree with this... I too don't think the 2/3" will ever see the light of day.. not that I would mind... I do like the look of 16mm...

When I started this post, I didn't really mean to compare the two so much as to look at the 7d from different eyes...
I think I was drooling a little too much for my own good.
I feel like with all the talk about the Scarlet on the forums none of us really know what we will get for around 3000 bucks. But I think we are all pretty sure that it will be something that we are all proud of using whatever it is.
I love the red image.
I hope to all that is holy that I can get one quickly. Then throw it on my steadicam and weight it down with something, maybe my pug. Pixel with like that.
I hope I am soo lucky.
I do think though if the footage from the 7d looks at all like the 5d that it will be in the hands of the consumer that once was willing to part with 3000 dollars for a device that ingests video from this world...

Also is there really a sub 4000 dollar market? IMHO there is no such thing... If you build something that costs x and another company builds something that does the same thing but costs less isn't it just basically about the product not the amount of money?

I really think that if the product is being used in the same way for the same thing even though one is really better than the other.... (most likely) that there is no sub anything market.

I want to film something viable for distribution... The 5d is doing it.
28 days later for example (XL!)s? and some lenses... It looked good Not perfect but good.

If the top end of your budget is $4000 then yes, there is a sub $4000 market. I don't see how this is debatable.

2/3" has its own market. Not all of us want 35mm, especially in a DSLR with a reflex viewfinder and the mediocre quality of a consumer video codec.
I like to shoot with fast broad range zooms primarily. The size and weight of such lenses for 35mm makes it less practical as a doc camera. For a solo shooter focusing by eye, 2/3" is a lot more flexible and forgiving in run and gun situations. Same reasons that 16mm/S16mm and 2/3" have been a mainstay of film/TV production for decades.
I like pro video/film camera features and ergonomics and I am not willing to accept anything less than a practical raw motion format for acquisition. A 2/3" Scarlet package will still be around 1/3rd the cost of the lowest price comparable broadcast video camera with far superior image quality to the video from any of these HDSLR's

I tend to agree that we won't see a 2/3 inch scarlet. If the standard video in SLR cameras is using a S35 sensor, it stands to reason that the camcorder market will have to go larger sensor and more mega pixels in order to satisfy it's users and also justify the price. Quite a lot of people are resorting to shooting on DSLR in order to get the benefits of DOF and nice lenses because there are no camcorders on the market that satisfy this demand.

The 7D will not have a faster workflow then using RED footage with either Vegas 9 or Adobe Premiere CS4. No transcoding whatsoever and you can view in full to 1/16 resolution.

I would be surprised if that many people don't buy a 3k Scarlet because of the 7D. The 7D is so cheap that you might as well get both. I know we will. Lack of jello, RAW post, 3k, modularity, and lack of compression arrifacts are plenty reasons to get the Scarlet as well.
