  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D and Nikon RAW 35mm video camera?

Nice acquisition codec please... Otherwise its all full of fail. Doesn't need to be as RAW as red.. but RAW'ish..

Indeed. Redcode is probably RED's biggest weapon in their whole arsenal. I'm fully expecting the 7D to use the same codec as the 5D.

By the way, Ace, I love that your title in this forum is "wedge in"! I wonder how many people on RedUser have any idea where that came from...

While RAW is future-proof (and it will indeed be the future), it's a pain to work with and I think Red would have caught on much faster in Hollywood (though slower universally--small projects benefit from the flexibility RAW gives you, even if it is at the cost of a fast/efficient workflow) if it recorded natively to HDCAM or something with a standard baked-in ISO, color temperature, dynamic range, etc...

The 7D will probably use the same codec as the D50, but if it has uncompressed HDMI out it won't really matter since you can then capture to pro-res quite easily. Skew, aliasing artifacts, and a lack of 24p are the real issues that keep the 5D inches away from being a hobby/low end-ready video camera or a production-ready crash camera.

you know what... i care a lot less about acquisition codec than motion characteristic. rolling shutter and jello? unusable. i refuse to shoot anything that i might care about on any half baked CMOS chip (RED ONE excluded)

umm....even the IDEA of a compressed codec makes me shiver.... how on earth can you want HDCAM?!?! ugghh

Because I still shoot HDV and DVC-PRO HD? I can't afford a camera so it doesn't really matter to me, anyway.

The issue is that, as regards workflow, RAW is much slower and requires some sort of communication between the DP, the house the prints dailies, the colorist, the editor, etc. to determine where to print 18% gray, what's your true ISO, white balance, gamma curve, etc. And there's no set language for developing RAW as there is for processing REC709 video or using printing lights while timing film. This is fine for smaller projects, but the flexibility the Red offers can increase the complexity of a large project's workflow by a tremendous amount. Hence the failure of a format even so "baked-in" as panalog before consistent standards were set for it.

umm.... Redcode is compressed (very similar to jpg2000 I believe), it's what makes it so easily useable. I had shot some stuff on the Dalsa Origin (RIP) which did actual uncompressed RAW recording and you had to have a Codex machine the size of a fridge attached to it because every undebayered frame was 48MB...

Real Name time Policar :)

Oh, damn it; I can't say whatever I want anymore if my name is attached. Can I delete some/all my posts first?

Also, I think the Red is pretty much the coolest camera ever, so don't get me wrong. I just think it won't reach its full potential and popularity until the workflow is perfected...and it seems to be getting there.

I think that is the point... post as if everyone knows you. It is too easy to get brave behind a screen name. We are big boys here. As long as you are being respectful, you can say what you want... on topic, of course.

I agree completely and I have so much respect for this board and for your company. You've made great and important innovations, not just in terms of making an awesome product, but also in terms of making the first truly internet savvy business (with the exception of businesses based solely on the internet and with no physical product, but that's another category)--open to the public, and open to public input. Much respect!

All I ask is for a clean start. I started this account assuming I'd be anonymous and I don't want my name attached to my more inflammatory remarks, which I increasingly regret. If you'd be willing to clean those up (or let me clean them up?) I'd be happy, even honored, to have my name on this board. And I look forward to shooting with the Red more in the future; you've done great things. Don't believe for a moment that even those who criticize you fail to realize it.

Ok... Policar.. why dont you just open a new account.. ill Freeze Policar for all time.

Edit - Done.. cleared the email address and Password from Policar. Didn't ban ya.. just froze you in time.

Much appreciated! I'll start up a new (real name) account soon. And again, I hope everything goes great with the new products. I know I'll be looking forward to them, as willl the rest of the industry. Later, and best wishes,

-Policar

Btw, many years ago this same username was infamous for getting into a legal battle with Apple computer resulting in their forced purchase (and our forced sale via litigation) of an unwanted domain name, a battle that made it into print (MacAddict magazine)... So at least I can go out in style, keeping it real as always. Thanks again.

Video options came out for the 7D. Looks like its gonna support:

1080/24p/25p/30p
720p/50p/60p
external mic
full manual controls (maybe no continuous focus)

I've got to say, the 720/60p sounds really nice, since its not gonna have too bad of a rolling shutter I would think. My only problem is that its once again going to be AVCHD.

Damn, Jarred; I think Policecar's next post would have been: JIM, I AM YOUR FATHER ...

JIM: Nooooooooooo

Catch is... They scored big with the 5D2 and now they've trickled in a few new features that everyone has been begging for -- 24p, mostly. They will sell a gazillion of these things.

Looks to be the same pixel-skipping approach to sensor scanning and the same wonderful jell-o skew. I'm sure Scarlet will be in a different league. But at < $2K, the 7D looks like a winner. I'd buy one if I owned any Canon lenses. I don't really want to start buying more glass though...
