  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 14 released: higher bitrate, 3K

On build 13, I noticed that if I lowered the brightness of the Red LCD (left middle button) it would create a high frequency sound. I could only get rid of this sound if I turned the the brightness all the way up. On Build 14, I now can hear the 'LCD whine' at any brightness setting.

Sounds like it needs a good slap upside the head...

Jim

I have the whiny LCD as well. Build 13, it was quiet if set to a certain brightness level (default). Build 14, it's whiny across all settings.

I have a "whiny" LCD too. Screaming Mimi. I didn't notice it before v14.

Now, to find out what Redcode 36 is about...

This is new... we'll get on it pronto.

I assume that a good slap upside the head didn't work? :-)

Jim

Dear Jim,

I slapped the LCD upside the head and it fell off the table. The table was being balanced on another table. Now its broked.

Kidding... we think we might know what it is. More investigation tomorrow.

Jim

REDCODE 36. Okay, I spend 15 minutes trying to find out what it is. A higher bit rate, but that's it. I take it there's an improvement in image quality but...how? Less noise? More resolution? More latitude? What?

I try punching REDCODE 36 in the FAQ and get "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. " In fact, I punch anything into that and I get nothing. Can someone provide a link or a better hint as to what REDCODE 36 is? I see a lot of excitement but...for what?

A search doesn't help much.

REDCODE 36 has a higher datarate, thus less (potential) compression artifacting = higher image quality

REDCode 36 is increased bitrate. Aka less compression. Aka less compression artifacts. Aka less smudy, watercolory, softish, posterized haloing in high frequency areas. And probably dramatically less chicken scratch.

well I bet it doesnt whine anymore.. right?

heh heh heh...

Is anyone else getting a whiny LCD now that they've upgraded to build 14?

Mine is whiny and I don't know how to stop it. The brightness is turned up on the LCD.

Also, when I hit scale up button (button on right) the monitor goes black for a split second, whereas in Build 13, it just scaled up without going black..

Getting the whine as well. I thought my LCD was on the fritz. Didn't even occur to me that it was because I just upgraded.

Also have to second the "black lag" in scaling as well.

Ditto.

thanks guys for the feedback.. your testing helps us track down the bugs in the beta.

Did some night shooting downtown last week (Los Angeles downtown).

On some shots we had a vertical smear - big spikes going straight up and down off the headlights. We were shooting with MKIII Super Speeds, but I don't think it was the lens.

Anybody else get that?

Was it a vertical line of pixels that looked as though they were brighter than the remainder of the frame?

3K sounds interesting.
For those of us coming from 35mm still photogrpahy, this is a 2X crop factor, meaning a 50mm would become a 100mm equivalent.
