  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 14 released: higher bitrate, 3K

60fps at 3k rocks. Great middle ground between 24/30 frame 4k and high speed 100/120 (hopefully) 2k. I can see this getting lots of use.

Very well done. Very well done indeed!

Who wants to buy a Varicam lol?!

Question: for the sake of education, can somebody please go through this list and explain the importance for each new improvement? It would be appreciated. Thanks.

crop factor guys?!?!?! please?!?!?

Well, it obviously won't line up scale-wise with a S35 or S16 lens, so keep those china markers and FF bands ready.

That's not how it works. A focal length is a focal length, with any size sensor.

Unless the image sensor is moving, the focus markings stay the same.

Had no idea, thanks. :detective2:

The focal length is the same, its the effective focal length I am interested in. Because its cropped, it appears like a longer fl

Let me guess...a 50mm looks like a 65mm at 3k?????

I don't think so. . . if it's cropped, it's just like putting tape on the edges of the monitor. It should have exactly zero effect on the real or apparent focal length of the lens. The DOF characteristics of the lenses will be identical whether cropped or not.

we are saying the same thing...bottom line is that its not the same.

If you are shooting w/ a 50mm lens, you would have to move the camera back to get the same framing. Most of us are used to shooting 35mm and having to adjust for this "factor" just throws you off a bit. I am just trying to get a handle on how much.

Sort of but that's not how people normally use it because if you keep the field of view the same then the DOF will be deeper in 3k mode. If you keep the depth of field the same then the field of view will be smaller. So the net effect is that yes for any given composition the depth of field will be somewhat deeper in 3k mode.

Cropping doesn't affect DOF. A 50mm S35 lens would look like a ~67mm S35 lens, but their DOF characteristics would be the same.

Please note that 3K 2:1 is 60fps!

That's way way way cool! LANDMARK for sure...

That should turn out to be most of what I shoot...especially for high motion genres like sports, nature, etc.

I'm a bit confused. Perhaps someone in the know can fill me in:

If you're finishing in 4k... won't the 3k look soft?

If you're finishing in 2k... Why not shoot at the higher 2k framerates?

I can certainly see its use especially for supersampling vfx and what not... but at the same time I'm a wee bit confused by it being the "default" for many folks.

Redcode 36. Yay!

I would very much like to see some 2k on REDCode36 vs 4k on REDCode 36 (both at 24fps) for compression comparison. Burlap and skin tones seems like a good compression breaker. Or Grass on sky.
