  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 14 released: higher bitrate, 3K

Cropping doesn't affect DOF. A 50mm S35 lens would look like a ~67mm S35 lens, but their DOF characteristics would be the same.

only if the focus distance doesn't change. But as redrum said, if you move the camera to maintain the same framing or FOV, the the focus distance is longer, making the DOF deeper. Except at the extreme ends, blah, blah....

way to go Mitch.. thanks for starting this again.

:)

Yes, but the point is moot because you wouldn't be using different resolutions for the same shot anyway.

Exactly, and unless you like to shoot everything tighter than normal, you have to move the camera everytime...thus your dof has changed.

To complicate matters even more the CoC (circle of confusion) for 3k will be different and more severe than 4k based on similar projection scenarios. (ie the 3k will be blown up more than 4k on the large screen so therefor focus will need to be slightly more critical)

Important stuff to know because I was alittle worried that the Circle of Confusion was gonna be all out of wack because some of us (ACs) have to think about that.:help: So should I think of 3k as a 21mm sensor equivilant! So when the DP asks for a 65mm up I put on a 50mm? Am I correct?

REDCODE 36 is awesome!

All you're really saying is that if you change the focus distance the DOF will also change, which yes, it will. The discussion here was only about the direct optical effects of cropping, not its practical considerations.

yes, this is correct

maybe thats what you were discussing, but im interested in the practical considerations.

However, lower resolution balances that so thats not entirely correct.

"So when the DP asks for a 65mm up I put on a 50mm?"

IMO when a DP asked for a 65mm - you give them a 65mm ... DP should be up to date = that's why they make the BIG $$,$$$ and AC's make $$$

I'm a bit confused. Perhaps someone in the know can fill me in:

If you're finishing in 4k... won't the 3k look soft?

If you're finishing in 2k... Why not shoot at the higher 2k framerates?

I think you may be confusing 60fps overcranking with 60P, or I may be reading your confusion wrong.

The new 3K mode does 3K 60P.

3K now does a max of 50fps over-cranked. So that should be less soft than 2K upped to 4K.

3K at 50 fps to CF and 3K at 60 fps to RED Drive. And yes, less soft than 2K upped to 4K. More similar depth of field characteristics to 4K than 2K and less image magnification for any given focal length than 2K.

This 3K vs. 4K issue in regards to the change in DOF is not as significant as with 2K vs. 4K.

If there is, practically-speaking, a 2-stop depth of field difference between 2K cropped and 4K (when you use a lens that is half the focal length in 2K cropped to maintain the same FOV), just as there is between 16mm and 35mm, then 3K cropped must be something like a 1-stop difference, which is not that hard to compensate for in some manner.

As far as the resolution difference between 3K and 4K, sharpness is somewhat of a perceptual issue and there are ways of making a softer shot seem sharper, for example. And you've all seen plenty of movies that had 2K visual effects cut into either a photochemical film finish or a 4K scan of film. Often a little sharpening in post can make the 2K shot intercut better with the 4K shot, so getting a 3K shot to intercut with a 4K shot should be even easier.

That was one of the driving reasons for creating the 3k format.

The stuff Jim's already shot in 3k looks fantastic.

Is anyone else getting a whiny LCD now that they've upgraded to build 14?

Mine is whiny and I don't know how to stop it. The brightness is turned up on the LCD.

Also, when I hit scale up button (button on right) the monitor goes black for a split second, whereas in Build 13, it just scaled up without going black..

All of our post production software should just work fine with this new 3K mode (REDCINE, RED ALERT and REDLine).

The new _F QuickTime files are not yet supported by the QuickTime codec however...

When you say "whiny"... what exactly are you talking about?
