Carol Anne...Keep away from the light...

Sometimes it's better to take a break, regroup, rethink, and recharge than to keep trudging forward. Here's a suggestion: Make everybody leave. Lock up. Take everyone out for a nice dinner and a couple of drinks. Then, just before leaving tell everyone to take three days and go be with their families, friends, pets, significant others, or whatever they want to do. But, under no circumstances are they to try to work. Refresh yourself and your team and things will often be much clearer when you get back at it. If the Red truck is wedged under the bridge don't remove the bridge to get it unstuck... let a little air out of the tires. Just a suggestion.

To mention as an informational sort of high expert in a field that a SWAT team kind of concept (for like a software bug hunter metaphor) is not working even with all kind of world written software today.

Obsolete.

Also this (SWAT team or similar) sort of defense concept is not working at all properly in US (ground/local or abroad) or wherever almost for 10 years (after 2000).

There should be another kind of approach to the issues...

It all about CODE...

When you google RED SCARLET BUG, there are many pages of the news. It feels reassuring that we were told first in this forum.

When I cleaned out the ol' family computer today, I found a moth in the air intake. Solved my bug.

I suggest to cancel Scarlet and only make Epics, but REDuce the price by 33% and with the increase of sales to REDuce production costs so it evens out.

Hey now! I'm really looking forward to my digital Bolex, a Scarlet 2/3" Cinema. :hand:

Scarlet's basically a watered down Epic. That's why it's trailing behind. The significant bug isn't caused by a firmware issue inherent in the Scarlet model or an overall lack of manpower from what I understand.

There's nothing to be gained by scrapping the scarlet and a significant market to be lost even with a 33% price reduction.

Don't say that Mike. I'm still angling for the Scarlet 645 that does 60fps at s35 and 5fps at 645.

As has been said by others, software bugs are just part of the game and will be fixed when they're fixed. The process will no doubt save the Scarlet firmware from suffering the same problem.

Jim, I'd love a slight clarification.

When we 1st got wind of this, we decided to make EPIC in the US, hoping that the company would find a solution in time for Scarlet production. That now seems unlikely so we are now scrambling for a new partner.

Does this mean that the plans to build Epic in the US have fallen through, or that it is unlikely that your foreign partner's issues will be taken care of by the time Scarlet is ready for production but should not affect the release of the US-built Epics?

Thank you!

We will begin to build EPIC in the US and we are looking for a partner for Scarlet. We can effectively build EPIC here. We cannot make the price targets for Scarlet in the US.

Mr. Jannard,

What if you were to partner with Apple Inc. for Scarlet Production? I know they outsource to the same vendors as many other companies - but they have some major sway in the supply chain it seems.

There is nothing like independence, but then again - there is nothing like a Penultimate combination. I just think it could be extremely helpful to work with a partner that is used to the "toaster" model of computing - open the box and turn it on.

Glad you are back!

Actually, I've always felt Red and Nikon should team up. Each has a lot the other could use/needs.

Jim,

Do you feel that the Epic/Scarlet firmware issue and/or the manufacturing speed bump will have any effect of the release of the new "Bomb" EVF?

you are kidding right?

I'm really not. Red needs broader distribution and retailers. Red also needs manufacturing facilities. And, if this whole DSMC concept is still going forward, Red needs still imaging technology to be able to viably compete w/ the other DSLR makers.

Nikon, on the other hand, could sure use a presence in the video and digital cinema world. They are getting their a$$ kicked by Canon in the vDSLR market. And Nikon seems to have little internal knowledge of the cinema world. Nikon could also make a line of digital cinema lenses, instead of everyone using retrofitted or old Nikkors.

Red is not equipped as company to make, sell, market and support a camera for the masses. Now it looks like Red has backed away somewhat from the goal of selling Scarlets to soccer moms. So maybe they can pull off Scarlet in its current incarnation. But if Red wants to go head-to-head in the DSLR market, Red will need help.
