Bug...

Can anyone let us know the logistics invloved in changing over OEM manufacturers?

We don't need a time frame or anything... but is this a big issue or something that can be arranged in the time it will take to iron out the Epic bugs and start rolling them out?

Basically, will it affect the proposed Scarlet timeline (3 months behind a functioning Epic)?

If you need to shoot now, then take a look at a pre-owned RED ONE market. Picking one up now, will allow you to shoot amazing footage now. Making money from it, now. Like waiting for the best computer, best still camera, or best phone, you will be waiting forever.

If you start shooting with a RED ONE right now, you will be blown away with it. You will learn your work flow for acquisition and post. That will mean that you can earn money from your RED, and the time to aquire your EPIC or Scarlet will be that much quicker, as you will be out shooting, rather than waiting. Waiting for Godot.

Nathan.

This should be mandatory reading. It doesn't cover folks who want a personal Scarlet (e.g., non-cash-flow related) but for the rest, this is a good thing to remember.

On a side note, have RED stopped selling new R1's? Or do the new ones all come with MX sensors? Just curious if there's much of a downside to buying new inside this transition phase.

Anytime you change major suppliers it can be difficult because besides the basics of getting quotes, delivery schedules, components ordered/delivered, etc, you don't really know if the new company really understands your needs, your QC criteria, etc. With your initial supplier you have normally gone through all the learning curve (on both sides) and ironed things out. Starting over is a pain and creates all kinds of uncertainties.

If we are talking about foxconn, it appears that the rumors of shutting down were false (which makes sense - if you really plan to shut down a factory that covers a square mile and 400,000 employees it would take several years to make that move). The biggest thing is that fox conn has agreed to raise wages by 100% - and to pass that on to customers. So presumably all contracts have to be renegotiated. This may raise the cost significantly enough to cause red to consider other Chinese or American companies and/or raise the cost of scarlet enough that they have to change the price to us.

As far as schedule, I'm sure it takes a few months to set things up with these manufacturers so it depends how close red is to a final specification. If they were still a few months away then maybe it wouldn't affect it at all.

Of course, Jim would know these answers much better than I, I'm just talking out my a.. at this point for lack of anything else to discuss :-).

Also... thanks to all the have shown concern for my health issues. They seem to be resolved. I'm getting old. But not too old to finish this job right. Any minor legacy I might have depends on EPIC and Scarlet being released properly. :-)

Jim

Didn't the doctors mention getting more sleep? As much as I'm happy to hear from you, your post is 3.38 AM MDT. No need to rush the legacy thing by working yourself into an early grave.

Don't mean to nag, but the Red community is somehow more than just business. We actually care.

Welcome back Jim.
Thanks for the update.
You need your rest. We are patient. The Red-MX has been great to most of us.
Thank you

To a degree... but the people that love you as a father, partner or friend will see it very differently. As someone who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer I can tell you now, in my opinion, what you do means nothing to those who are closest to you. Just being there, even doing nothing, is treasure to those people.

I understand and respect your drive Jim but there are more important things in this life than a deadline. If this cancer gets the better of me , which I don't believe it will, I am not going to arrive at my last breath wishing I had done more work. I'm going to be glad I spent more time with my wife and young sons... so that if I become a memory in the hearts of those that love me then it will be a memory they cherish.

At least that's my take on things these days....

Kris.

Much love to you Kris.

The biggest thing is that fox conn has agreed to raise wages by 100% - and to pass that on to customers.

Average worker made $130 a month. So now they'll make $260 (10-12 hours a day?). Minimal per hour price increase to the consumer.

(and still way lower than any American worker can compete with)

Jim, I'm glad you're back and healthy.

I'm sorry to hear about the bug. I'm confident that you and your team will find a solution and I will someday be a Scarlet owner. It is a day I look forward to hungrily.

I suspect that the S35 will come out some time after the 2/3 inch flavors, so I am already expecting a wait.

Until then, stay healthy and be happy.

I must say I agree. I'd like to be remembered for the way I went about my accomplishments more than the accomplishments themselves.

All the best to you Kris.

The RED ONE has been a great camera for almost three years. With the next offering and based on what you have delivered to this point, we can all feel confident that you are creating something special.

I'm sure RED won't dissapoint.

Good to hear that you are feeling better and it's nice to see that you've been working (showing up on a few sets).

I just saw this article in The New York Tines on-line: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/16/movies/16empires.html?hp it’s titled; “In China, an Attempt at a Hollywood-Style Movie” It looks like a rig made up of two Red One’s. Hope the BUG gets found soon! Then we can move into EPIC territory, it’s about time for the second generation cameras to come out! Good Luck Jim and company, all the best!

I appreciate the new goal to keep us better informed, and I appreciate the honesty.

I know its frustrating, Jim. Being a leader always is. Good job and good luck.

Jeff

Jim!
Do not worry about delays.
Your concern should be to continue making history.
Do not give them excuse to competitors, takes the camera with no errors
We shall be waiting.
I was lucky, to test the Epic in Las Vegas and is fantastic.
Get Well Health.
A greeting from Spain

Kiss your kids for me... And don't stop.

I might reming people, that back in the day a 'Bug' was literally an insect that had gotten into the computer and caused a short or had broken a vaccuum tube. Oh the conveniences of the modern age, to have metaphorical bugs that we enlist coders to fix, rather than getting out a ladder and a dust pan ;)
