  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Brook Willard's Epic Accessories...

Got mine today. Love it.

What a thoughtful design. Really looks and feels like it belongs on top of the Epic. And the laser-etching is super-cool.

been beta'ing one for a couple of weeks...went low mode with it on steadi and was rock solid.

Brook and the boys at VF did a fantastic JOB!!

Got our first two units overnighted to Chicago just in time for our Studio shoot... Branded units soon

My concern is that the factory vents are plastic for a reason and this entire top plate is going to get REALLY hot?

Nah, it definitely hasn't gotten that toasty. We've been running our 3D cameras with no fan grills in metal 3ality brackets for 6 months and my plate on our 2D cameras for a month or two on this movie and they haven't heated up yet. :)

I'll weigh the plastic fan grill when I get a chance. You can see Ketch's sitting there in his picture - it's pretty small.

I'm glad to hear that everybody is liking their plates! I've been getting a lot of fantastic feedback from M owners over the past few months. Special thanks goes out to them, particularly since I've been spamming some of their inboxes with renderings and giant lists of questions. :)

Thanks for posting your pictures, guys!

The next batch of plates should be ready to ship by the middle to end of next week - just waiting on a screw delivery.

Loving that this replaces the original fan vent, better cooling, better performance. Inspiring work Brook.

On the contrary, the camera breads extremely well with the new VF Brook's top plate, and the original RED's Fan plate weights nothing, but I removed because there is no reason to keep it there,
did not even try to see if the Top plate would install with it on, as I see absolutely no need to have extra items closing out the Fan.

Again have been using the camera extensively and in all source of conditions, look thru the several Hundreds pictures galleries and you will see.

Love Brook's work and look forward to what ever else tHe is cooking up with the guys at VF!!

Why is the top vent made from plastic in the first place? That's a bit confusing.

Brook's plate seems to make so much sense that I can't understand why RED wouldn't just ship the Epic with a similar design built into it. Is there any reason or application to NOT have Brook's plate installed?

Because it only makes sense to add the top plate for some situations but not all, and even so Brook's design makes the plate very light,
still adds weight, that in some situations needs to be avoided, example 3D rigs... so Red's vent top plate is perfect as it is literally weightless.

Extremely thoughtful design. I like the built in focus hook/slot, holes on the sides, integration with cheese plate extensions for when battery and/or i/o modules are added, clearance for focus adjustment, plus obvious effort to keep the whole thing lightweight

Super job.

My thinking is, the metal will dissipate heat better than the non conductive plastic.

Brook, those look sweet! I'm going to bug Camtec to get some!

I'd naturally say no. :)

I kid - there are some situations [like what Ketch pointed out] where having *anything* on the camera body is a hinderance. Most Epic 3D rigs have their own brackets built for the camera [ET's, 3ality's...] that you'd want to use. And, naturally, it all comes down to taste. Some people are bound not to like it! :)

Thanks, Christopher! You may already have a little surprise waiting for you over there...

Could you make a side rod adaptor for your plate in 15mm and 19 mm sizes. I would want 15mm.
I mount my motors, downconverter, transmitter,... from the top 15mm rods on my Red One and am looking for the same setup when I get my Epic.

Way ahead of you, Sergei. There'll be something very similar to that. :)

It is interesting that while the top iris rods on the R1 [be it 19mm or 15mm] are properly spaced from each other, most accessories that people put on the rods do not rely on that. Don't get me wrong, many do... but the top rods often end up more like "curtain rods" from which people hang their FIZ, transmitter, downconverter, power breakout box, etc. It adds a bunch of weight [two long, heavy rods] but is very easy to adjust.

Often times I see people mounting accessories to quick release systems on the rods themselves. It often ends up as a top mount to an iris rod to a speedy clamp to a V-mount to a plate to velcro to the accessory itself [like a downconverter]. That's a lot of stuff to hold something so small! It's definitely convenient and allows for a lot of adjustability [don't get me wrong... I do this 95% of the time and love it] but I think that with a camera as small as the Epic there is the opportunity to try out new mounting brackets and over-arching concepts for building a camera in a slimmer, lighter way.

More soon, don't worry.

Exactly - the added weight of having two rods in 100mm [or 104mm] spacing is often unnecessary as most people use one rod or just use the rod as an individual tool. There are definitely times where having a properly spaced top-mount is of great value, but for most people it's strictly for mounting motors and hanging AKS on the side.
